  • From Sudan to NBA - The Uniting Force of Luol Deng: Basketball and Beyond
Can sport transcend borders and have the power to unite a country after conflict?
Iman Amrani sits down with basketball legend Luol Deng to discuss his remarkable journey, from being a South Sudanese refugee to being drafted into the NBA and playing for some of the world’s best teams, including the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat and LA Lakers.
Since retiring, Deng has become president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation and also one of its coaches.
He talks about the remarkable story of the team qualifying for the Basketball World Cup and what this means for the world’s youngest nation.

I watch their team and their fans live in Manila when they played against us, the Philippines, in this World Cup and you can really see how this one is such a source of pride for them. I hope South Sudan, and the rest of Africa, breakaway from all these wars and instability in the region, and just reach their potential cause I meet a lot of nice Africans in my country.

@@aleks3906playing Basketball isn't easy especially being Sudanese it's not historically popular like Soccer but he moved around a lot. He really likes Chicago, I am from England also and I like Detroit not very different from Chicago

He was born in Sudan, South Sudan is a new name given to a land South of Sudan. The people in South Sudan are real Sudanese and majority of those in North Sudan are partly Arabs and they are from their Arab fathers and not Africans.

It felt bad at the time, but now I am so happy Luol has this money to use and not Jeanie Buss

Jim Buss was the head of the basketball operations when they signed Deng. Jeanie was only the head of the business operations. Then Jim resigned for fcking it and Jeanie had her removed from the Lakers org.
