  • Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow is one of most popular commanders of all time, currently at the time of writing this, ranking as the number #4 most popular commander over the past 2 years over on EDHREC, and with good reason. There are a lot of different things going on with this commander. It’s easily the best option available as a ninja tribal commander, and ninja’s are a fairly popular tribe because their signature mechanic, ninjutsu, is incredibly well designed and allows for some really fun and interesting deck building and gameplay. And then there’s the triggered ability where whenever a ninja connects, you essentially draw a card and burn the table equal to the mana value of that card, which incentivizes you to build around having a lot of cards with a high mana value, as well as being able to manipulate the top of your deck.
    Yuriko is also one of the few commanders, that actually get to mostly ignore the otherwise really important safety measure of the format, the commander tax. The commander tax only applies to the casting cost of your commander, and since ninjutsu technically isn’t a casting cost, but an activated ability, the commander tax isn’t applied to the ninjutsu cost. And on top of that, putting Yuriko in play using the ninjutsu ability, won’t even add any commander tax since you’re not casting your commander. So as long as you have ways of enabling ninjutsu, you get to play an extremely mana efficient game, while also accumulating a lot of value as well as putting a lot of pressure on your opponents life totals in the process, which is a pretty scary cocktail.

    I think a good addition to mana rocks would be Sonic Screwdriver. It adds mana, enables scry and can make target creature unblockable

    One thing that is neat about Miracle cards is how it interacts with Sensei's Divining Top. Set up your top deck to have the miracle cards on the top and pass the turn with 2 mana up. On the next player's turn upkeep, tap the Top, draw a card and play the miracle cost at instant speed! Pretty filthy with the extra turn spells.

      And to add to the Miracle part, Yuriko does NOT draw a card, she "puts it into your hand" not the same as drawing the card.

    Now that Roaming Throne is out from Lost Caverns of Ixalan, I think it would slot very well into this deck. Doubling all of Yurikos triggers would be nuts

    Great video, dude. I started with a ninja beatdown in Yuriko and quickly sought high manna cards. had I done things differently, I would have gotten shapeshifters and changelings before buying the scroll rack and divining top. The craziest tech I have right now is an enchantment that puts cards from my discard pile back on top of my deck so I can fix the damage for the Yuriko trigger or reobtain cards that were countered before I played them.

    Btw they printed something in the Doctor Who set that shouldn’t be overlooked. Nanogene Conversion can close out the game on the spot depending on your board state.
    Let’s say you had 5 ninjas including a Yuriko on the board. With Nanogene you can have all 5 creatures be Yuriko. If an opponent is open to attack, or you have some way to make them evasive(cover of darkness), that would be 25 Yuriko triggers going off.
    Now imagine you had enough mana left to cast a Roaming Throne after you nanogene. That would be 50 Yuriko triggers!!!!!
    With 6 Yuriko's on the board and a Roaming Throne that would be 6x6x2=72 Yuriko triggers. Imagine just burning the entire table using your entire deck.
    Note that you can't deck yourself out with the Yuriko Triggers. Yuriko doesn’t draw you cards, it specifically states “reveal the top card of your library and put it into your hand”. If you run out of cards in your library, then you don’t get to reveal and put any in your hand.

    Surprised you didn’t mention the Elrond that lets you scry 2 when a creature hits the battlefield. One of the best includes I put in my deck

    • @ceaselessmtg
      @ceaselessmtg  Před 8 měsíci

      I believe it says scry 1. But sure, good suggestion! There are a long list of individual cards I could have mentioned but didn't, for the sake of video length :)

    Hey one quick question. Are changelings ninjas when they are on hand or only if the enter the battlefield?

    • @ceaselessmtg

    Dude i play tribal ninja yuriko and i never get past turn 3 begore everyone at the table nust insta kills me. This video really doesnt help better a yuriko commander deck because what the deck needs nowadays is a way to keep you and yuriko alive long enough to stay on the board without 3 ppl focus focusing

    • @DragonKnight1230
      @DragonKnight1230 Před 4 měsíci +1

      I will side comment i am not hating on the video itself. Its a good intro to building it, but most players will just nuke you off the table as soon as they see Yuriko and I'd love to see ways to keep oneself alive. I have added Darkness and No Mercy to my deck which have come in clutch but would love to hear more suggestions on survivability
