Fans had spent years searching for the clues that would finally reveal the truth about what was really happening on the island. But did their relentless focus on what was happening lead them to overlook what it really meant? By unpacking the show's key themes, we can see how Lost’s final season offered a deeper message about our own existence-and how while this may have disappointed or frustrated viewers who were looking for more literal answers, it was also true to the kind of story that Lost was always trying to tell. Here’s our Take on the primary conflicts of Lost, and how its ending brought them all to a thematic conclusion that revealed the universal truths at the heart of the show-just like it always promised.

If it had come out in the last 5 years, it would've been amazing.
It would've been shorter and not bound to syndicated TV where episode count is more important than episode quality.

I feel like if Lost writers weren’t padding for episode count, it may have been easier for them to just write what would be necessary. I remember when I first started watching the show a few years ago I was worried about being disappointed by the ending because of what everyone had said about it. When I got to the ending I absolutely loved it, because it's about the character's journeys not about the mysteries. The mysteries may make it a fun show but the characters are what hooks people in. There aren't that many shows that have the stunning character arcs that Lost has.

    1. They weren’t dead the whole time
    2. The flash-sideway was the bridge between their death and heaven. They had to amend/deal with their regrets/struggles. Jack had to be a father so that he could experience what his father went through and finally forgive him. Sayid helped Nadia’s husband because he blamed himself for her death in real life. Ben helped Alex with her Yale application because he blamed himself for her death. After they dealt their complexes, finally they arrived at the church
    3. Even though they died in different times, they all met at the heaven as if they just died. There was no waiting in heaven. When Kate said to Jack at the concert, “I missed you so much”..she meant that she lived a lonely life after his death.
    4. The bomb didn’t work. Ben wasn’t on that plane. Still he was a part of the flash sideways. So the “plane didn’t crash because the bomb go off” theory isn’t correct.
    5. Richard’s curse was over. He wasn’t immortal. His hair turned grey.
    6. Ben couldn’t let go off the guilt/regret of Alex’s death. That’s why he didn’t enter the church. Also there’s a chance Ben tried to betray Hurley after he replaced Jack. When Hurley said, “Ben, you were a great number 2”, I felt like Hugo was trying to forgive Ben for something
    7. Dr chang was the host of the Dharma initiative videos. He was the also host of the charity concert. Maybe he found redemption too
    8. Jacob’s death was little undercooked. The only way someone could kill him if the person stabbed him before he could speak. But before dying, Jacob had a full conversation with Ben.
    9. Eloise had very good knowledge about the island because she took Faraday’s book after killing him
    10. The show depicts that be careful what you wish for. Your blessing might become a curse. Jacob and MIB couldn’t kill each other. Richard couldn’t die. Blessing became curse
    11. The funniest thing was that a lot of people thought the LA part in season 6 was real just because Juliet said “it worked”. When sawyer unplugged the vending machine, she said the same thing Lol
    12. Aaron died too
    13. All of them had one thing in common..they got fucked up by their parents..just like Jacob and MIB did

He was 3 years old that we saw and had no reason to think he didn't live a full life! Where was Sun and Jin's daughter then? Hurley wouldn't have said Ben had done a good job if he didn't! Eloise was Faraday's mother who left the island pregnant to raise him! She only shoots him when he time travels because she doesn't know that is her son. Not ALL of the people brought to the island or the candidates had bad parents! Richard WAS ageless and immortal while Jacob lived because he wanted him to help lead the islanders. He had been there since the 1860's! Yes the bomb did go off they clearly showed that it did! But ridiculously it just jolted them forward in time. The bomb was never shown to crash any plane! The planes that crashed on the island were there because Jacob wanted them there and because they flew into the island's "bubble". Not even Desmond not turning the key in time in season 1 actually caused the first plane crash. I could go on but your obvious problem is revealed when you say "I felt...". I honestly believe that if Lost was made today by a streaming service it would be considered a masterpiece.
Part of the issue with the show is that there were so many episodes per season and the network wanted more seasons than what the creators wanted to do. Had they had five 10-episode seasons that you could binge watch it would've been received a lot better.
The other thing I'll say is, if you binge watch it it's a much better experience than when it was on TV. You're less likely to get bogged down in the little mysteries that are ultimately not that relevant to the overarching plot. The real mystery is the characters.

Could you do a video on how mental illness is portrayed and vilified (especially in the horror genre)? Many movies and TV show’s portrayals are dangerous because of their inaccuracies. Many projects also don’t seem to have any consultants to help get the portrayal right, not to mention the fact that the actors/actresses cast do not have any experience with and/or are not diagnosed with the disorder themselves (ex: Sia’s new movie is a bout a girl with autism but the actress playing her does not have autism).
Also I would love a video on the fiery red head trope. Red heads (such as Anne Shirley, Pepper Potts, Mystique, Sansa Stark (Kind of) Black Widow, Merida, Jessie from Toy Story, Jean Grey) are more likely to be characterized as passionate hotheads than blondes or brunettes.

yes, i was thinking of that with the show ratched and its depiction of multiple personality/dissociative identity disorder. people develop it in childhood as a response to trauma and are not violent because of it, but the character developed it as an adult and became extremely violent in a way that seemed correlated with her mental illness.
also, regarding horror, i recall seeing a video about the actor who played pennywise, and he talked about intentionally walking and talking in unpredictable ways to make the character unsettling. i can see the same kinds of acting choices when people play mentally ill characters.

Lots of odd moments but Desmond and Penny's episode The Constant might be the single best episode of television I've ever seen.

Lost rescued and accompanied me through a time when I experienced serious trauma where I had essentially died and needed to renew myself.
I had previously had a girlfriend named Penny so Desmond's story resonated with me. It was a spiritual experience and believed that Penny was my Penny so I called her often.
I'll always look back at the Lost series as memorable and I'll also always respect the life long restraining order Penny put out against me.

I've had many conversations with fellow members of the (original) Lost community, who all shared similar experiences. We connected so deeply with this fictional world because we were at crossroads in our lives, processing trauma, or missing something in our lives. It wasn't just that the show carried us through and forward, or filled a void in us; it was us - each other, sharing the experience and the journey together. Christian's conversation with Jack in the finale, was a love letter to the fan community.

So no one ever noticed the name of the show? Lost as in lost souls. It was all about hope and faith. Good and evil. Everything that makes us human and imperfect. Because we aren't inherently one thing or the other, were both. There cannot be any darkness without light. People just choose which one they want to be.

Oh man I loved Lost when I was younger!! What a phenomenal show, full of tears and laughs and such real, vivid connections between its characters. It really was the journey not the destination for those people. I'm gonna go watch Hurley jump starting the Dharma van with a big smile on my face! Please do more dissections and essays on my favorite TV show!

I love this show so much. I know many were disappointed with how mysteries were answered. But, I've always loved the characters & their development first and foremost, more than the plot/mystery. Three of my favorite stories: LOST, Dark (netflix), and Attack on Titan have so much in common.

I love Lost. I never understood why people were upset with the ending. I thought it was a great ending to a character driven show. The ending shot with the empty plane was just reflecting back on how everyone got to the island.

Agree that I loved it, but I also see why many didn't. There were many people more focused on answering theories than the characters, even though the writers and producers had warned that if you were more focused on answers, you were bound to be disappointed. What's funny is they answered most of the major questions, even ones a lot of the unhappy people complain about, they just didn't pay enough attention.

My favourite show of all time. It’s truly unbelievable the amount of people out there that refuse to give this show a chance, because they’ve heard completely out of context, false, and unreliable summaries about the plot and the ending.
Usually, their information comes from people that either haven’t even watched the show at all or people that tried watching it, misunderstood it, gave up and then probably skipped the to the final episode to get the answers and then when they were obviously and predictably let down, began ranting about how it’s ‘the worst show ever’.
Lost has to be the show that has suffered the most from extremely misinformed word of mouth.

If there's one major thing that helps me make more sense of LOST and accept it more is that the show is very much like an unofficial Stephen King adaptation. When you go back to the behind the scenes the writers cite King's "The Stand" as a major influence on LOST. That story was about a group of characters from all different walks of life that get bound together by fate after society collapses. The narrative begins at first very grounded in science with humanity killed off by superflu. But then the story also shows that it's very bound by the supernatural when two major characters representing good and evil - Mother Abigail and Randall Flagg - emerge leading two factions.
A lot of fans were annoyed at LOST having too many genres within. You'd be rich for every dime you'd get for every fan that says LOST should've been about the plane wreck only and no mystery. But the mystery and supernatural and science fiction elements at play made a simple story into a very intriguing one. It had its grounded interpersonal drama, factions trying to survive, trying to make sense of the oddities all around them, and it had good vs. evil, ghosts, time travel, scifi energy, mother fucking polar bears. It's all weird and it's all entertaining.
