  • I’m on my way to Bath in Somerset but I must stop off at one of my favourite places and my ‘Home away from Home’ which is the Ancient and Sacred Landscape of Avebury in Wiltshire. This vast Prehistoric Area has the largest Stone Circle in the World as well as Silbury Hill, West Kennett Long Barrow, Swallowhead Spring, The Ridgeway Ancient Trackway and The Sanctuary making up this fascinating Ancient Complex. I’d arranged to meet my friend Neil Mancini here for a little wander around the Stones where we talk about his involvement in the Pagan Ceremonies that take place here, the way Avebury resonates with us both and many others as well as doing a quick spot of Dowsing.

    That little chapel has a garden you can sit in. We sat in the garden there, it was so peaceful. Our two dogs just laid down and went to sleep. Amazing place, far better than stonehenge. I love being able to walk amongst and touch the stones.

      Yes, I even remember when it was still a Chapel in use as well as a Tourist Centre.

    What a small world. Neil kindly took lots of photos of Mythago when we were dancing in the stones for the raising of the Archdruid of Avebury a couple of weeks ago. I thought I recognised the name! Sarah

    Must visit Avebury next time we are in Wiltshire; such an interesting place and I can see the attraction. Nice video Marq, thanks for sharing with us 🥰

      Thanks Lynn and you really must visit. There is a lot more than just the Stone Circle.

    Nice to see you visiting Avebury. I am lucky to be nearby. Would certainly like to meet up and compare notes another time when you are over. The accepted crossing points for the Michael and Mary lines are at an oblique angle in the centre of the Cove and on a perpendicular in the centre of The Sanctuary. Possibly Windmill Hill too. The Sanctuary is very powerful for energy and ceremonies. Well worth a detour if you are visiting the Avebury complex.

      This Trip was on the way to the ASSAP Conference. The Sanctuary us indeed a powerful place when I've Dowsed there over the years. Thirty years of going to Avebury and there are still wonders to be discovered. I'll let you know next time I'm over.

    Nice video. Last Saturday I popped up the road to the Stanton Drew stone circles.
    Was in Glastonbury for Beltane over the weekend representing a Green man, carried the pole to Blossom hill etc.

      Stanton Drew has been on the Vidit List for a few years now and must make that happen.

    There's a stone circle near me in Somerset called Stanton Drew which is a great place to visit.

    When you showed stone no.73 you omitted mentioning/showing the gently dished base/foot of that surviving north stone which surviving one of a pair of stones at the E entrance. It is one of only 2 stones where you can actually see a foot which were pummelled to shape using sarsen maul stones. At Stonehenge (which is a later date than Avebury) the base of each stone was in the form of a longish spigot that was driven deep into the ground. The Avebury circle stones were seated in their excavated pit with care, and easing each stone into position, they would have sat perfectly seated upright so allowing chalk to be safely rammed around each stone thus securing them perfectly. However, it seems that the remaining Beckhampton Avenue stones were spigot type and so perhaps a different date compared to the circle stones. The line of small stones making up the surviving western side of the square, described as the "Z" feature by Keiller are the oldest remaining at Avebury dating to before there were ever circles of stones, and possibly replicating straight lines of timber posts which were at Avebury before stones were used; which see the post hole (found by Keiller and marked with a short cylindrical concrete post near the south entrance), and noted by Gillings and Pollard.

    Interesting Marq, but slightly spoiled by the poor picture quality from your camera. I could see it was overcast, but I would have thought the camera could have adjusted itself to the conditions.

    • @MarqEnglish
      @MarqEnglish  Před rokem

      Unfortunately I was shooting quite raw and on a GoPro which is crap in low light. I did Grade the picture a bit but didn't want to do too much as it's a Vlog. I should have used the big Camera.
