  • In this video I tackle the Das Werk SM U-9 in 1/72nd scale,
this was a bit of a personal project as I have always wanted to do a 1/72 submarine and this Sub came along at the right time.
Filming such a mammoth kit was a challenge so unfortunately there were a few compromises with the filming but I hope you still like the result.

That is beautiful. The way models used to be. You don’t need a million parts for an incredible display piece.🎉

I realize I am two years out from the build, but one major issue needs to be pointed out: you are not a model builder; no, you are an artist who builds models. Your ingenuity and choice of ad hoc design throughout is equalled only by your knowledge of material options throughout. It is no understatement to say that I was stunned by your skill-set throughout the build. Further words honest escape me! 🙂

I just completed the same build. There are some amazing reference photos of U9 online that show some different paint details than shown in the kit. The most striking detail was with the two vertical masts that fold down into the top of the boat....the reference material shows one of them to be a very light color that is probably a light gray, then the other one is a dark color, either very dark gray or possibly black. Also, the two blisters on top of the boat that house the two hatches, the same reference photo shows them to painted in white and another color, probably red or safety orange. I just went with the paint guide in the instructions though. I still got a nice result, considering this was my first boat model.

@@lpjmodels It’s a great kit but there are some silly problems, one of which for example, you mentioned the covers towards the bow. I’ve seen other builders cut the deck to align these covers and do away with the gap at the front end. The surface details are beautiful though. The lack of full rigging instructions and the 3 dive plane points with only two shown in the instructions has had the modelling forums in a buzz. I’m no maritime modeller and certainly no expert on this vessel type so I’m just going to build this out the box as instructed and using references, add the rigging to finish her off. That said, if DW announced a WW.II type VII U-boat, I’d bite their arm off and be lying to my wife again at how much it cost 🤣. Really enjoy the videos mate, your work is fantastic. Please keep them coming. Cheers, Paul 👍🏻

Those instructions remind more of a Lego set than a model kit. Would prefer if most of them were like that these days, as I hate steps where you need to apply hundreds of bits at once and you only get one view from which to use as a reference. Also, I think spru glue is extremely underated. You'll never get a better bond with anything else, and it's a lot less messy than ca glue or expoxy in my experience.

Now awaiting the addition of all those very small parts that detail U9.
I haven't planned paint colours yet, but grey over black does look impressive, or two shades of grey should do the trick.

@@lpjmodels not really room for many kits because at the time I was living in a recreational vehicle since October but managed to build a Bronco coastal submarine 1:35 type 23 and that was my limit for space but since moved into a 3 bedroom house and now space is unlimited for display now I can build type 7 1:72 Atlantic version and type 9 1:72 and display italeri 1:35 s-38 schnellboot and build MAS 568 italeri 1:35

I've had realy good effects using some cheap hogshair brushes (various sizes) to do my chipping. The stiffer coarseness of the hogshair seems to help in being more deliberate with the chipping.

I wish I had room for this kit, and Revell's 1/72 Type IX U-Boat.

    Very nice build
Do you mind if I make a suggestion about your airbrushing technique... It mostly only applies to the application of primer or larger full coverage areas.... Try releasing the trigger as you finish the stroke then press down again when you start back in the other direction... With a little practice you will find yourself getting more consistent and faster coverage using this method
