    Small correction. Sound design (ADR, SFX & Foley) always comes after motion graphics & VFX. The music is done in conjunction with edit.

      @AxTechs Před 2 lety +4

      This depends heavily on the movie/show - if they have the money they'll do it in conjunction with the edit, if they don't, they'll most likely be separated

    Very nice video as always. Why don't you make an in-depth video like this about all the different jobs in the industry? For example... not many people know exactly what a producer is, or what's the difference from a producer and an exectuive producer. Or what's a script supervisor, a production runner... And I bet most people don't even know precisely what a DP does...

    I would recommend Fusion over After Effects. Once you've got used to a node based graphics application, a layer based one feels clumsy. But you'd have to get used to a node based yourself to make that call.

    • @wolfcrow
      @wolfcrow  Před 7 lety +1

      I've used Nuke, so I prefer that. There is no replacement for After Effects.

    • @Avidcomp
      @Avidcomp Před 7 lety +1

      wolfcrow Personal preference is always what counts.
      But what do you prefer most about AE; If AE was no more and you had to use Nuke/Fusion, what would you miss the most?
      p.s. Another great presentation. Thank you.

    • @wolfcrow
      @wolfcrow  Před 7 lety +1

      You're welcome! Nuke/Fusion are different packages. AE is primarily a motion graphics platform, and in that respect there's no replacement for it - or at least at Adobe CC rates. Autodesk Flame is definitely an option, but still people use AE with it.
      AE is the Photoshop of the video world. Can't imagine a world without it!

    • @Avidcomp
      @Avidcomp Před 7 lety

      wolfcrow The whole PCMAC debate passed me by years ago.
      I was using Parallax's Matador (paint/layer) which became illusion (bought later by Avid) all running on SGi hardware.
      So by the time AE came along, I was happy with my Avid Media illusion... then I moved across to Eyeon's Fusion as I was now used to node based compositors. I made many tv titles and did compositing jobs.
      By the time AE was "the thing", I couldn't find any operators to show me something I couldn't already do... so I never really spent much time with it.
      When I finally did start playing with AE... I just kept cursing it. Love Photoshop.
      Suddenly ill informed production managers started asking if I used After Effects (because that's all they'd learned to say), so I started seeing some jobs go away (but they always had poor budgets).
      Any client worth their sort didn't care what I used, they just wanted someone they could trust. Sadly those types of clients are becoming rare.
      Colleges began pumping out AE users and now the market is over-saturated and "clients" want it all done yesterday, for nothing.
      Glad I'm out of it really.
      Today I love the camera and editing.
      How's that sir?

    Great video. There was just a little bit at the beginning where it kinda sounded like you said you should rename video files. I don't think you meant that, but can I just say to anyone who watches this, please DO NOT rename original media files from the camera unless you absolutely have to because you have ended up with multiple files of the same name. Import into your editing application first and rename it in there to something more useful than A023C041 (or whatever your camera creates), the original file at the computer level will be left as its original name. This is very important for the Online/Conform. On a similar note, do not strip original media out of the seemingly bizarre folder structure that some cameras create. These folders contain key metadata that some software uses to interpret the footage correctly.

    • @wolfcrow
      @wolfcrow  Před 8 lety

      Thanks. Most people are too lazy to name clips correctly in production. Sometimes you have multiple clips with the same name. Also, whatever name-change you make in the NLE is not carried over in XML (afaik). And if you revisit these clips at a future date it's a total waste of time to go through everything to find one clip.
      If responsible and organized individuals name clips correctly, it isn't an issue.

    • @AndyBobMcKee
      @AndyBobMcKee Před 8 lety +1

      wolfcrow If only all editors were responsible and organised individuals. :-) As someone who has colour graded a lot of different editors work, the biggest problems I've had with conforms has been when editors have renamed files or stripped files from their correct folder structures. It is sometimes necessary, I admit, but it's not something that should be done as routine and it is not something that is done on professional productions.

    • @wolfcrow
      @wolfcrow  Před 8 lety +1

      Thanks for the insight!

  • @maxbootstrap7397
    @maxbootstrap7397 Před 6 lety +3

    Great video! You omitted "voice over" (as in "narration" during the film). But also, it seems to me that the best films (with the clearest, easiest to understand voices and speech) have the actors come into a sound studio at some point, and repeat their dialog into one or more microphones as they watch themselves speak the dialog on the film. Frankly, this seems like the best approach (certainly highest quality), though somehow some people do manage to create very clear voice audio from recordings at the time of the shoot. Anyway, where would you put these steps into your flow-chart?
    PS: What would make this even better is a list somewhere of what software can accomplish each step. For example, can DaVinci Resolve reasonably perform all editing and grading? The point of this would be for people to look at which software can perform each step, and then choose which software applications to buy to have all the steps covered. Note: In my case I'm trying to do as much as possible on my Linux/Threadripper/1080ti system, but I also have a Windoze system on my LAN for whatever steps don't have good [enough] applications for Linux. It really would be great to have a list of all software that can perform each step.

    Hey, Wolfcrow could you be able to make a video on how the post-production workflow in cinema in case of all software to software. Basically, what I am trying to say is a round-trip among the software that is involved in making a film possible. Which software is used when and for what purpose? It would be better if you can make a video saying briefly about all the software present in the market and when and which purpose they serve for!! If you can make a video on that topic then it would be very helpful, but in case if you cannot make it please write a blog saying about those things! I would get information from there too as I follow your blogs as well!! Please reply back!

      Not true, adobe products are used everywhere, less than avid but better integrated together. Mindhunter was edited with premiere, and vfx were done in ae, Walter murphy now uses premiere all the time for example. Avid products were just here before, it's the same with protools and Sibelius, doesn't mean they're objectively better

    Hey, wolfcrow
    I'm not sure did miss that part but you have mentioned that you prefer finish the CGI/VFbefore color grading. Let's say I want to add a simple box 3D model into that clip and it was shot on RAW/LOG, how can the VFX artist know which color to use cause it looks flat?
    Maybe editor / color artist should color correct it into some kind of standard like Rec 709 / ACES in the first place ? After all these, color artist could do the final touch/ creative grade?
    Thank you!

    • @MrGamerChoi
      @MrGamerChoi Před 3 lety

      Ok guys. For whoever is still interested in this question and answer, I am here to giving yall the answer after 3 years.
      A little background of myself: After this video, I was hired as digital compositor in the Movie industry. What I am saying here might not reflect all workflows in different area of the industry. I can only give you the perspective from post production standpoint.
      1.The industry basically works like this: DP shoots footage in either RAW or Log format (depending on the budget and preferences).
      2. Production studio converts the Raw/Log footage into an "industrial format" called OpenEXR and from my understanding, all OpenEXR embeds linear colorspace in it (which is the "washed out" look you see from linearized footage).
      3.When our (Post production) studio received footage (aka image sequence) from them. We then deliver them to different artist for different purposes (e.g: Movematching, compositing, lighting...etc)
      4. Depending on which position you are in and what software you use. All software are configured by using OCIO. Take myself as an example: My Nuke would be configured with OCIO and whenever an image sequence is feed to my Nuke. It will work in an OCIO environment but you will see a Rec709/ Srgb Lut applied / corrected footage on you screen.
      5. You work your tasks in an linearized environment. Meaning all of your other materials that have different colorspce have to be converted to linear first and then work in a OCIO environment.
      6. After you have done your tasks, you will have to export your task to OpenEXR (Linear)
      7. After delivering it back to Production studio, they will decide what colorspace they want to deliver to different platform. For example: They would want to convert the linear footage into Rec709 for broadcasting on TV or Srgb for internet streaming or Rec2020 for Blue-ray. You get the idea.
      Conclusion: "Colorspace" basically has no part in the production process rather they play a big role in which platform the footage will be on and giving out the best viewing experience with "optimized" colorspace the platform needs.
      I hope my explaining makes sense lol.

I am very interested in knowing how the post-production work/ pipeline is followed in different VFX studios if not all major studios then at least one well-reputated VFX studios explanation is highly appreciated. How many artists do they have? how many artists do they have for specific software and what are their primary role? Which render engine do they use?

    HI!!! GREAT video!! thaks. I have a question. I have a mess with my shortfilm. I need a good way to sync my multiple audios (3 lavs and 1 Boom) to every shot. and then edit and send it to the audio guy for mixing....How I should name every videoclip and every audioclip so I can edit properly? I hope you understand my problem.

    Very good summary although I have to argue a little. LTOs are meant to last long. You always know when the next generation of LTO will come up and that gives you the ability to PLAN! Also the new generation of LTOs can read ALL the previous versions of LTOs and that won't change in the future, so it really is the best method to archive.

      I don't share your optimism on LTO.

      Well, you don't have to, but these are facts luckily.

      Likewise uncertain of LTO's future. With multiple public cloud storage options offering hybrid DAM integration, and gigabit+ network speeds, why bother?

      For hundreds of TBs? Do you know whats the price of an LTO?

    • @MineYourBiz
      @MineYourBiz Před 8 lety

      The *cost*? Yes.
      Deep storage using commercial cloud already includes redundancy- in the background and in multiple geographical locations- with tiered pricing for the amounts that you need to access quickly (as opposed to hardly ever again). The time invested in upload is immediately rewarded: you never have to physically do it again, if you don't want to. And with greater market penetration, the pricing continues to trend downward.
      The *cost* of LTO is that, at best, a serial stream of data is backed up, one copy at a time. Only to be rewarded with the task of repeating this serial transfer of data in a few years- with pricing not on the same trend as public cloud.
      With the rapidly decreasing price of public cloud platforms, I have little hope for LTO 9 to be relevant.
      Also, I concede that in many applications LTO might be the right choice- but those cases are rapidly decreasing in number. You seem particularly bullish on this point though: Do you sell LTO decks or something?

    So basically you collect the good footages put em in a sequence, work dat vfx, color grade. And then put sound effect, music, foley, and mixing them all is the last process?

    Sorry sir, high end camera and sound equipment organizes itself. It’s why they’re so expensive and why you pay to have script supervisor, 2nd camera add assistant, and sound mixers.

    Thank you for such an awesome video. i Know its over 2 years old but here goes. In the mastering stage, when a master file is done, is it rendered from the finishing program like Mistika itself or is there a specialized software for high quality rendering they use ?
