There will always be the question of "who's the fastest NFL player?", so I decided to break it down.
I broke down the difference between acceleration and power, I looked at the 40 yd dash and the 100m sprint.
Breaking down the fastest times ever ran by NFL players, what I found was quite interesting... let me know what you think down below!

In college, I ran against Bob Hayes several times. In our last race, he beat me by so much...I gave up sprinting and went back to pole vaulting. Bob was one helluva nice guy, too.
That's dope Alumn
Very Interesting- How old are you now , is Bob Hays still alive today ?

Was it hand timed?
what is electronically times or done with hand?

It was “” bullet” Bob Hayes that caused me to be a Dallas Cowboys fan back in 65 after following him in the 64 Olympics
Me too and I’ve been a Cowboys fan ever since 1965. 👍🏽
@Jay Sebring yup, that’s right and proud of it. I could say I was 2 months old but I would be lying to you, haha. That would still make me old, lol. Nice meeting another fan. Here’s hoping they have a good/great year.

Great recognition of a legend. My grandfather (Coach Nathaniel Washington) and a good friend of the family coach James Day are the founders of the official Bob Hayes Track Meet held here in Jacksonville FL. They should run both 40 and 100 meter sprints in the combine
In pads holding a football.
Yes the 100m dash is the only way to measure there top end speed not the 40 yard dash

People fail to realize that according to his football coach the late, great Jake Gaither, Bob Hayes was not a track guy playing football, he was a football player who ran track!!
Absolutely!
Exactly! And quit racing at age 21, not even close to his prime.
If we can manipulate time and allow Bullet Bob to race today's dopers, Bullet Bob would smoke every one of them.
Bullet Bob Hayes! A Cowboys legend and hall of famer. Couldn't get much better than him when he was playing. I wish I could've been around at the time to see him play. God blessed that man with speed may he rest in peace. He died in 2002 before he was inducted in 2009.

Also, hand clocked 40's are completely specious as ANY player knows
Idc if it was hand clocked or not I would bet my house Bo Jackson ran a sub 4.2 40 some say he ran a 4.002 before closest to a sub 4 40
Especially since they don't even have starts. They just try to hit the button when they see the player moving forward.
@@beefsteew420 You'd lose your house on that bet. Bo's times at other distances to not point to him being that quick
@@sydboski nobody knows what his real 40 would be so you can’t even say that 😂
@@beefsteew420 Well logically speaking It is impossible for him to have run 4.12-4.13 in the 40 yd dash.
1. ALL NFL 40 times were hand timed up til 1999. The scouts used to fluff the results all of the time.
2. He has a hand timed 30 yard dash of 4.1 seconds. From home to 1st base during a baseball tryout. 10 more yards in just .02 seconds? Not humanly possible.
3. He has a 55m fully automatic timed in 6.18. 55m is only 20 more yards than 40 yds. Herschel Walker ran 6.11. Sam Graddy ran 6.03, Darrell Green 6.15, Ron Brown 6.10, johnny Lam Jones 6.17. And I can name more. You actually think Bo was that much ahead of these guys at 40 yds then they blew past him in the last 20 to be ahead of him by 0.01-.015 seconds? The latter part of it is Impossible unless Bo just stops running at 40yds and jogs across the line.
4. Christian Coleman is the 60m World record holder at 6.34 (destroying the previous record of 6.39) and has a 9.76 100m best which is 6th fastest in history. He is also the quickest starter in the history of sprinting, by way of his 3.77 first 30m (which is faster than Usain Bolt's 3.78 first 30m during his world record 9.58 100m). Coleman ran an NFL style 40yd dash on turf with semi auto timing like the NFL uses since 1999 in 4.12. You would actually bet that Bo at 227lbs, who has NEVER run a world class time in any event (pb 10.44 100m) would run stride for stride with 165 lb, quickest starter in sprint history, 60m WR holder, and 6th fastest man in history Coleman over 40yds? There is definitely a difference between being quick and being fast. When we describe cars we discuss low-end vs. top-end speed. Like comparing a heavy muscle car vs. a Porsche.
When describing the football players in this video the same distinction was made. Some football players can accelerate sooner but aren't ultimately as fast at the end of their burst. Some football players accelerate slower but ultimately finish moving at a much greater rate of speed at the end of their burst, albeit they need more room/distance to get to their top speed.
Very cool video. I talk about this difference all the time.
Very good point. That's why the 40 yard doesn't tell the whole story. I remember when the Raiders took Darius Heyward-Bey over Michael Crabtree because he had a 4.3 40 dash. Face palm.
Never heard it put that way.
the only [problem with your analysis is that it isnt backed up by real data. looking at years of splits over the 100m shows that very few athletes have superior 40s, or 60s but not 100m times. Athletes that have great 60m generally have very good, or great 100m. The athletes that run 9.8 100m also have the fastest 30,40,50,60m times. Generally.
in other words, fast is fast. there are the odd exceptions but very few. In that regard, just as much value could be had from 60m.
Was always my problem I’d put 3 kids on their ass cutting up field and would get about 15-20 yards before being caught
@@timn4481 The general principle is still true. The runners you are talking about are the odd balls and that is why they are the top sprinters - they can do both. Watch any 100m race and you will see this principle played out all the time.
GREAT VIDEO!!! Professional job explaining things and presenting context.
Thanks for posting.
Not an nfl Fan. But love a KTO mini fact documentary ❤️ awesome work, great content
Track speed is not the same as football speed. Sure a guy who is fast on a track is going to be fast on a football field too but he might not be the fastest. They should put on a full uniform and carry a football and run on grass. Not in shorts on a track.
Fast is fast , Scott . The guys in these videos ran in shorts AND pads , and fast is fast .
Terence Brooks no thats why bo jackson was faster than hays. And he had more big plays. It takes vision to know where to run and how to run and then.pull away in pads. Football speed is different. I ran 4.7 40 yet had more big plays than a guy who ran 4.4 40 in highschool. I was 20 lbs smaller 4 inches shorter. Yet i could break away from people and be faster on the field
@@terencebrooks7904 fast is fast, but if your a track guy and have never ran in pads you will lose a step. And when you get laid out by a DB you will definitely slow down. So game speed and track, or combine speed is totaly different. You may be faster than me straight up but when I check you off the line you slow down. Football speed is different than track speed. You would know if you have ever played football.

@@cmoneyno5 Bo Jackson would get smoked by Bob Hayes
@@hoytsigman5435 Bo Jackson ran a 4.13 electronic timed 40
The 40 yard dash doesn't always translate to how fast they are on the field. So if I had to pick one guy that I've watched. I'd say Darrel Green. And this is coming from a lifetime Cowboys fan. He use to chase down our WR's like nothing. Much respect to him.
I agree. Both Bob Hayes and Darrel Green are the fastest players I know of based on their play and timed races. Everyone else is 2 steps behind.
oh yeah darrel and bob fastest guys on the football field especially darrel.
But Green was also out run on the field. You cannot say with 100% accuracy who is fastest on the field because there is no way to measure and compare the speed of players not on the same field or from different eras. As far as actual timed speed goes Jim Hines ran faster than any other NFL player in history.
@@sydboski you're right. I'm just speaking on the ones I paid attention to. I'm not going to speculate on other players I've never paid attention to. There are no exact time measurements on on the field playing compared to an actual timed run.

Combine #s are a joke, they need to do their workouts in pads, it will separate the football speed from the track speed. Some guys cant adjust to wearing pads as well as others
Not only pads but some have faster top end speed than others the 40 only checks how quickly u can get a fast speed going
Bob Hayes had track speed and football speed, so I'd say this vid reached a valid conclusion.
@John Molloy nope no human can. N never did more old speed stories what happened did humans become slower? Cuz no one can do that bs now that there's computerized times. N 100 m isn't a great football speed test. Ull see guys like Andre Johnson had a faster 100m than devin hester. Length n strides allowed for faster 100m times

Before the 70's all nfl teams ran was man coverage? Interesting fact
For real?
Pretty much. Hayes came in and led the league in receiving TDs his first two seasons and forced teams to play zone, he was a rookie in 1965. But the biggest change by far, probably the single biggest rule change in NFL history, was the 5 yard chuck rule that started in 1978. That is what led to the explosion of zone defenses. Also called the Mel Blount rule. Before then a DB could bump a receiver all over the field until the ball was thrown. Mel Blount would bang on guys and they couldn't get away from him. Watch old clips, guys like him and Lem Barney were masters of the bump and run coverage, heavy on the bump. The NFL wiped that out, suddenly CBs needed to be quick and it didn't matter if they weren't physical or couldn't defend the run. Mel Blount was the best CB in the NFL, the prototype after the rule change was Neon Deion. There was no more contact. But when Hayes played you could try to bang and grab until the pass was thrown
In 1977 2500 passing yards led the NFL (14 games) 179 yard per game. The league average was 142 yards per game. In 1978 the average jumped to 159, then to 180 in 1979. Then 196, 204. Basically in about 3 years passing yards jump by more than 1/3 simply because of that one rule change.

I am 62 and I ran 440 dash on a cinder track in several meets in 1973 as a 9th grader . The cinder tracks are definitely slower especially if damp. The best I ran that year on the cinder track was a 54.8 . The best on what I call a rubberized asphalt almost new track was a 53.1. I was pretty consistent in most of my times as well as anchoring the mile relay. I would say the difference in times of 1.7 seconds was likely entirely due to the different surfaces. My understanding is that the cinders were from coal fired railroad locomotives but I could definitely be wrong.

You must know that Bullet Bob ran a 9.65sec in the 4X100-relay because he was running all-out to make up a 10m deficit and he ended up winning by 10m. I will say this, if Usain was to compete against Bullet Bob, Usain or his contemporary dopies would eat dust. Please be reminded that the Great Bob Hayes didn't use supplements such as Bonds, Armstrong, or the post-1980 PEDs sprinters.
@@benthekeeshond545 You can say the same for every sprinter that went to the NFL. "IF" they trained another 5 years they might. Who knows? I have heard the rumors and saw the video of Bob's legendary run, but it wasn't 9.65. It was supposedly 8.5 which is also false for 3 reasons.
1. Timing. Relay splits are not official. In 1964 his split would have been hand timed. You know you have to add 0.24 to convert hand time to fully automatic timing.
2. Bob got the stick late in the passing zone. Exactly mid zone is 100m from the finish line. Bob getting the stick late in the zone means he ran less than 100m
3. None of the other anchors out there ran faster than 10.50 in the 100m during the Olympics. None were in the 100m final. One was a long jumper and another was a 400m man. So if Bob rand 8.5 that would put the others around 8.9 which is impossible.
Bob's anchor leg was amazing, but it was closer to 8.9. Today's sprinters run 8.8 - 8.7 Bolt ran 8.65 during the World relays.
You think Bolt took drugs?
I see a KTO upload, I click. It's simple.
My father-in-law says that in a game in the cold against Green Bay, Bob Hayes was out-running defensive backs with his hands in his pockets to keep his hands warm so he could catch the ball. I have never seen footage of this, but if it is true that is ridiculous. Bob Hayes was another tier of fast.
Pretty sure the game you’re mentioning is the Ice Bowl. The NFL Films footage of that game shows Hayes running with his hands in his pockets on run plays
Your videos are fantastic
I've been a fan for so long and I just found out you went to the high school I go to now
Thanks for not forgetting Bullet Bob Hayes.
I had the honor and privilege to meet Bob Hayes down in Miami Orange bowl during the what they called the playoff bowl against Minnesota Vikings in 1968..
Dallas won that game he was the last guy out of that stadium and I waited for him to come out and I remember it was raining hard that day and he talked to me for a few minutes but he says little guy sorry but I'm in a hurry to get on the plane .. he asked me what my name was and he told me to stay in school and keep my dreams alive and someday maybe I'll be a football player.. I get chills to this very day thinking about what he said..
And I also have the honor to meet him a hearing Denver Colorado back to one of his book signings at one of our malls out here.. The book was called Run bullet Run.. he was to me the person I looked up to and I want to be like and run like and play football like as I was growing up he was an amazing man and amazing to watch and whenever Dallas cowboys played on TV I always made sure I've always watched that game..
R.I.P mr. Robert Hayes you're always in my heart and always my memory buddy... #22. The original 22
Lmao a 40 yard dash just testes ur acceleration and ur strength a real speed duel would be a 100m sprint
Exactly!
Darrell Green ran the 100 meters in 10.08, in 1982, .02 off Bob Hayes olympic gold medal time of 10.06.
@@kenfields603 And Bob ran an 8.6 last leg of the '64 sprint relay. He's right there with Usain Bolt and he did it on cinders.
Very well done 👍🏼 I subbed 🍻
Brilliant video, honestly.
I LOVE YOUR VIDS! Don't lose hope in making the great videos!😄
Darrell Green. Fastest man in the. NFL for several years. Plus he was a very class individual.
Nah Bullet Bob Hayes easily
@@yadoo8164 Nah Jim Hines.
How can a man who ran track in college, and is interested in sprinting, not have ever heard of a cinder track?
rushmore IV you know I read your comment then got to the part of the video...how could a track runner not know was the first thing that I thought of too! C’mon man huh?
@Tay Versatile It hurt like hell when you wiped out on a cinder track. Don't they use that stuff for cat littler now.
NO kidding that's hilarious.
Why ask why? That kind of track has been obsolete for probably 40 years. Im sure he's prob never seen or ran on one so why would he know? Its like asking a kid now about the wishbone offense or the wide tackle 6 defense!
@@bigred5222 there are still cinder tracks in use today. there's 3 in my home state in fact. Times are quicker than grass, and you cant run on it without spikes..the top layer is slippery. But they are quick tracks. They had to be considering athletes were running low 10s on them before they werent used anymore.
Bob Hayes changed defenses with his speed!! That’s insane.
Thanks much to Ted Ginn for rekindling a great event.
Bob Hayes may be the fastest ever.
Good vid!
Bob Hayes world's fastest man ever!!! Just look what he ran on compared to todays sprinters. Dirt tracks retired at 21 well before his prime!!
I like that Ginn put his money where his mouth is too putting 10k on the line to anyone who wants to race. I’m a buckeye fan so I’ve been watching him for a long time and I bet he’s still one of the top 10 fastest in the league still and at his prime not many could run with him. Not many people know he ran a little bit of track at Ohio State and he reportedly ran a 10.2 in practice with 10 minutes of stretching
Robert "Bob" Hayes:
Aka, "Bullet Bob"**
The Only NFL Player** To Win An Olympic Gold Medal, And A Super Bowl Ring!!!!**
"The Fastest NFL Player Of All Times."**
Jim Hines ran faster.
sydboski you know nothing lolol
I'm gonna go ahead say Bob's a bad man. A great football player and amazing track athlete. Wow. Respect
Finally a video that has it right. Bob Hayes, my favorite as a kid, was the fastest.
He actually wasn't. Jim Hines ran 10.03 on cinders to break Hayes' 10.06 world record during the 1968 AAU championships. It was better known as The NIght of Speed. Jim Hines is the fastest man to ever put on an NFL uniform and play in the NFL.
