he's a master explaining a heck of a lot of useful stuff about ligature and reed placement, reed longevity, reed/ mouthppiece compatibility. There are clinicians who stream 10 dollar words together but say less.. and some of those guys are decent pro level players but nothing like Bergonzi who is an actual dedicated performer. Simply, Bergonzi is a world class player. if we become so impatient in the presence of a a master who is pausing occasionally to be sure about picking the right word, than perhaps we may miss the depth and think we've got the message. Coltrane put it well - "go to learning humbly"
Wow. Wish I would have been given this info early on in my journey playing alto....Makes one hell of a lot of sense. Always was afraid to put reed and or lig. in the wrong place and therefore did not experiment. Great info on mouth piece.
Powerful urge to play the saxophone that is right here at the end of my bed and try these tips out. However, for some reason it's not socially acceptable to loudly experiment with saxophone techniques in a house full of sleeping people.
Hahaha. it is 4 am and I have my saxophone just in front of my feet... I am sure that if I go out to play it in the street police would stop me faster than if I did it at home... I never practiced at home but why not start doing it when neighbours party noisily until 2am?!?... Imagine them calling the police... So this is a Sleeping Party and you ended up with all this mess 2am because your neighbour was practicing with his sax... OK I'm calling the mental health doctors for a mass recovery in the mad house...
Great video. First video I ever saw before learning to play sax said to have the reed just the tiniest bit below the top of the mouthpiece. I was using cheap, very junk reeds but they played great anyway. After watching enough videos that said to always line it up with the top of the mouthpiece and even though I've only played a few days I just could not consistently hit notes. I kept over blowing or under blowing, and had a vibration in the mouthpiece. I also think my reed was warped too...so there is that. *EDIT* nevermind it wasn't warped it seals fine and looks good. I guess I just struggled with it too long earlier and got frustrated.
