  • @yoloalchemist

    Here's my 2 cents. Perhaps Sony didn't win this E3, but here's the thing. It's really ridiculous for us to expect them to epically blow our minds every year. Sooner or later, the expectations are gonna pile up when someone won't be able to meet or exceed them. That's how it's always been in the video game industry, and even a gaming giant like Sony is no different. Granted, there have been many demands, hopes and dreams only someone like Sony can deliver that could've been in this E3, like Bloodborne II, Shenmue HD, or whatever Shawn Layden was talking about when he said Japanese developers are coming back hard this year and that they'd announcing more games of that vein, and some exclusives like Bloodborne II aren't gonna make it in this case. But even these take time, money and resources. They don't come cheap, because that's how important they are for us. There is still PSX, so I'm still hopeful.
    I myself can see a few flaws here and there, like those dangling corpses, Destiny 2 and that horrible Skyrim VR. But then again, every E3 has its flaws. No one could ever be flawless. And for those flaws, we got what, a sick new trailer for Uncharted, Monster Hunter on the PS4, the remake no one thought they'd want until they see it in Shadow of the Colossus remake, a solid gameplay trailer for Spider-Man, and that awesome God of War trailer that, just within its 1st 30 seconds, completely sold me on the game's story.
    I will conclude simply by saying what another comment said in the EZA twitch chat: A bad Sony E3 conference is still a decent one.

      Can't agree more, eventually they will have to deliver on their past games that have been announced during E3 15/16. I would rather they do this than keep announcing games that have no release date and went into the abyss ( So the cycle is Announce>Announce>Deliver). Granted we don't see many solid release date but these gameplay trailers show progress.
      I think we have been a victim of our own expectation.

    Aside from Microsoft showing a car at a games conference, I think both Microsoft and Sony did fine - they showed games, games, and more games, which is what we want. Of course some people are going to come out of that disappointed if they don't get the games they wanted and/or expected to see, or the games weren't their cup of tea.
    Personally, I still liked Sony's conference more. Especially when the games I liked from Microsoft's conference are pretty much all going to be available on PS4, so in that respect Microsoft failed because they haven't done anything to make me feel like I'm missing out on their product.

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy Před 7 lety +4

      For me Sony's show was a big failure just because of my personal preference. Sony doubles down on the kind of games that show well in the format they have chosen for E3, which is "cinematic" games. To me, I have NO desire to play any of those games. I will watch a few on CZcams like I did Uncharted 4. But I have no desire to pick ups controller and play most of those games. And the big problem was that they all looked like the SAME game.

      Mark Davenport You're right, more exciting games is great. I didn't say I disliked Microsoft's conference though - only that for me they failed to achieve what they would want from it, which is for people to want their new console.

      I think Microsoft is in a way somewhat contempt to pick up people over time with bundles, a lot of folks bought a Xbox One S around the time of the Battlefield 1 bundle.
      They got burned hard with the Tomb Raider thing, they got grilled for it, Phil Spencer has spoken about how he learnt from that.

    • @ScariestMovieScenes
      @ScariestMovieScenes Před 7 lety +1

      Days Gone looked like a boring cheap TLoU clone but in open world, yawn
      Spider Man has dumb Batman combat like even the movie-tie in games had, so what's even the point of hiring Insomniac?
      Gran Turismo can't compete against Project Cars or Forza
      Uncharted only DLC
      Detroit looked like pure crap, doesnt even have actual gameplay, just cutscenes and you press a button to make a decision just to watch even more cutscenes
      And a remake that looks... eh
      Yup so great

    • @raz5240
      @raz5240 Před 7 lety +3

      + BuzzFeed Yellow
      Days Gone will be the highlight of open world games, brings so many new cool elements it's astounding.(they present everything in an after-conference thing)
      Spider Man has batman combat because batman combat was critically acclaimed and loved by everyone.
      Gran Turismo was and will be the king of racing games, the only reason they can't compete is because they don't launch a game every freaking year.
      Uncharted looks like more uncharted greatness, so if you loved 4 (which many did) they'll probably love this one.
      Detroit is more love it or hate it, but based on the previous games they made, most people love it. Which is nice.
      And God of War even though it was already considered amazing, it seems like they've taken an even bigger step forward and are not only doing gameplay but also narrative, which is incredible.
      So yeah... amazing, not great.

    People talking about a company "winning" E3 are so ignorant it hurts. That is the last thing E3 is about, but for some reason these people feel like they have to take a side just because they don't own the other console, or just because there are two main sides and they feel they are obligated to pick one. That gets me down, especially seeing these people in an EZA comment section where the mantra is Love and Respect. But no, people just keep throwing shade at the other side debating which conference was worse.
    I enjoyed all the conferences this year and watching with the Allies made them all the more sweeter.

    Sony having to juggle announcements for PSX and E3 sort of means holding back on one, or evenly distributing excitement between the two. I think we should remind ourselves what a gift it is to have PlayStation hype every 6 months. Sure, I would have liked to have my mind obliterated and my name lost to the ether by the incomprehensibility of the announcements, but the Shadow of the Colossus reveal had me involuntarily bouncing in my seat and crying. That made it worthwhile for me.

    Silly kyle. A remaster is exactly what it sounds like, a touched up version of a games currently existing assets. A remake is making all new assets from the ground up. It actually doesn't matter if the game itself plays or looks the same or not.
    And in the case of Crash I think remaster is still pretty accurate, since they directly imported the level geometry from the original trilogy.

    I am so psyched for Spidey (more than any game in years, probably) but have to agree with the guys regarding the QTEs. I really wish there was a tethering mechanic similar to Just Cause 3 in there. That way, when he's running up the crane, players could actually aim and anchor the web to points on the building, as opposed to just hitting a button. It would give a very small amount of agency, granted, but it would feel A LOT less arbitrary.

    This still gets an 8.8 from me. In terms of what I want from an E3 press conference, it was close to perfect. Just game after game after game after game. All killer and no filler. I'm not going to severely deduct Sony for not exactly showing the stuff that I personally wanted to see. I will concede that it could have been arranged better to maximize the excitement. And while the different stage elements were cheesy and probably didn't need to be shown on stream, they didn't completely derail what was going on. There was no throwing out to a different location to watch poor demos like EA and Ubisoft had. Or doing an extended commercial for a car like MS did.
    Basically the only real downers for me were the continued cutting to the crowd after every single trailer. I don't need to see journalists looking nonplussed every couple minutes. And I will concede that there was no big wow factor beyond Monster Hunter and Shadow Of The Colossus. I don't understand why they only went an hour, though. There's so many games in the pipeline that you really couldn't crack the whip and ask a few other studios to bring something?
    But otherwise, it was definitely what I wanted. It might not have been as untouchable as last year was but there's only a few things I can really deduct them for. I don't feel the need to punish them for doing the same show only not nearly as hype.

    A scripted gameplay sequence using tons of QTE. This is the reason why I appreciate the design of Breath of the Wild so much.
    Unlike the design of the Shenmue, Uncharted, God of War or this Spiderman. The design team of Breath of the Wild is able to create epic scripted gameplay sequences without the need of QTE.
    Like the scripted gameplay sequence outside Vah Ruta in BOTW, instead of using QTE, the design emphasized on item usage (an armor to allow swimming up a waterfall), NPC partnership, the choices of method to destroy ice cube homing missiles or mines, bullet time idea to aid arrows (a special type of arrow that requires to be collected beforehand) shooting together with the emotional music with goosebumps effect. This elegant scripted gameplay design successfully gives the player a very fulfilling experience.

    I don't get the hate for the QTE's in Spider-man. It's the best Spider-man has looked on screen in ages, and the cinematography and set-pieces make those moments so thrilling. I'm over the moon for this game.

      And there's plenty of game in the trailer to satisfy me. This is a short look at a plot-heavy moment in a open world Spider-Man game, and it's not allowed to be cinematic for a bit? Give me a break. Some people are overly pedantic.

  • @DSCdaP
    @DSCdaP Před 7 lety

    I was left wanting, like you. Looking at the list, the games are phenomenal, but most were yesterdays news. It's like eating Sunday-roast leftovers on Monday, delicious, but you already had them before, you know exactly what you're getting, it's satiating but not terribly exciting. Especially considering the last 2 years, which were phenomenal.
    I have 2 theories as to why they went this route, because as you have touched upon during the pre-show, Sony has the most stuff. They have the most studios, the most partnerships, the most unannounced projects and the most "wow" potential with many of their flagship studios and close partners confirmed working on games which as of yet have not been announced. I would've bet a lot on at least one of the 3 From Software games being announced prior to this conference, but it didn't happen.
    Theory 1, Sony bought into the Scorpio hype. The, by now widely considered derailed, Scorpio hype-train has been chugging along for a year. It's possible Sony thought they can't possibly outshine Scorpio so they didn't even try. Had they known Scorpio would fall this flat, perhaps they would've brought a bit more new stuff. Honestly, just a new Soulsborne game after Spiderman would've redeemed the entire thing. Fingers crossed for "Demonborne", the missing link between Demon's Souls and Bloodborne, connecting both games beyond Bloodborne's alpha footage of Father Gascoigne saying "umbasa".
    Which brings me to theory 2, Seeing how they consistently address criticism, most notably from this conference, the unmistakable marking of the "VR block" of the show and labelling VR games as such, which was a source of confusion for many people last year. I think this is them addressing the criticism of announcing games too early. They've made 2 notable announcements, one was a third party game. Like it or not, that's unfortunately how they had to do it, you can't magically move up release dates but you can postpone announcements and this could be what was happening here.
    Sony has the biggest catalogue of games, studios and partners as I remarked previously, which also creates the biggest potential for disappointment as someone like Huber can just list 30 potential announcements and hype himself into oblivion thinking about them, without them ever happening. The list of potentials varies from person to person, but the one for Sony's conference is way longer across the board for most people as they have developers from every corner of the world on their side, something for everyone.
    They also shied away from specific release dates, another criticism they addressed. I'm with Kyle on the stagecraft, unnecessary money-suck. They should've instead made the conference longer and highlight more of the games coming this year during this showing instead of the pre-show. Like GT Sport, that game hasn't gotten much love on the big stage, Knack 2 is still coming this year, they should've shown why people should give this one a shot, according to people who've seen it demoed behind closed doors, the game is great. Ni no Kuni 2 was bumped for whatever reason, maybe Level-5 didn't want to shell out for stage-time, who knows. The point is they had more things to show, even if they weren't new they would've padded the conference, which felt very light.

    Even Spiderman running through the burning building looked like just "run straight, and spam the dodge button and it will automatically dodge whenever something falls." I think they should draw your eyes somehow to each falling piece of debris as it happens, maybe on the right or left side of the screen, so that you at least have to react directionally which way you dodge. And I hope you can't hold down the button or spam it, that there is a fail animation if you mistime it, which will slow you down or mess up your movement for a second allowing the debris to potentially fall on you and kill you or take some of your health.
    That way it's at least skill based. You either make the timing itself skill based, or you make the dodge directional so the direction aspect of it is skill based. Otherwise you're just running straight forward and spamming dodge to watch the character do cool canned animations within the set piece. How fun is that?

    • @punchforpound2808
      @punchforpound2808 Před 7 lety

      They could draw your eye to the falling debris by changing the color slightly as it falls, like how in the MLB games they tint the baseball a certain color when it's a curve ball (if you turn on that setting) so that you have a way to identify which pitch it is if you react fast enough, since the graphics aren't necessary good enough to show the spin of the ball. At least it wasn't last time I played MLB but that was a few years ago.
      And they could also have debris fall straight down, so you have to duck under it, or do a dive through. You could have different types of dodges on different buttons, or how long you hold it down, or whatever, and then if you pick the wrong one it won't work out for you.
      That's how you create fun combat and gameplay in games. Skill. Variety. Forcing the player to utilize good timing and reflexes combined with different combinations. That's why fighting games are so fun even though it's just two fighters in a 2D environment fighting. Because you have to combine the right button combinations and movement with timing and reactions and strategy. That's how any good combat system should be, not just in fighting games. I hope this game delivers but I didn't really see that level of skill based combat/gameplay system. I hope I'm wrong.

    I personally preferred Sony's conference over Microsoft's. It flowed better and they showed games that I genuinely wanted to play. Many only available on PS4. Spider Man in particular looked phenomenal. Sucks to see the Allies be so down on it. Hurt my heart a bit.
    Also as fans we need to get our hype in check. We can't expect huge surprises every year and constantly speculating about stuff that is far fetched only leads us to disappointment.

Most of what MS showed was multiplat and in no way, shape or form made me want to own an Xbox, let alone a $500 Xbox One X. Sony showed us EXACTLY why we need to own a PS4-true exclusives.
