Dial-up sound 700% slower (Creepy)

  • You know how when you slow a Justin Bieber song down by 800%, you get a neat ambient track? Well if you do this kind of thing with the most horrible sound in the world OH MY GOD I CAN NEVER SLEEP AGAIN
    This was made with a program named PaulStretch, which can make this sort of thing from any sound files. I edited the final product a bit to remove long silences and some white noise length, and to try to even the volume out a bit. I didn't add any echo or whatnot, that's just what happens when you want to slow down a sound file without affecting the pitch or sounding like shit, so blame the program, not me. It can be downloaded here: hypermammut.sou...
    You can now download it on Mediafire: www.mediafire.c...

    You suddenly awake from your cryogenic sleep as the pod's door slowly opens. The pre-recorded female voice attempts to welcome you to the current year, but her voice is muffled under thick static. Everything is dark and there's a strange electronic noise piercing the air; the lights are out, and from the room-sized window it appears to be a foggy night. You approach the window for a better look, realising it is broken and cracked as you near it. Through the darkness and the fog you can almost make out the street below, but there's no sign of life. You know something is wrong, but as you ponder this thought a blinding light shines, accompanied with a grotesque robotic roar. You desperately try to grasp what is happening but you cannot see, and then you are almost deafened by a sinister static. You know it's coming from outside. The static is then drowned out by another roar which shakes you to your very core. You open your eyes and catch a glimpse of a huge metallic dome passing by the building, equipped with what appear to be searchlights. Suddenly, you are blinded again as the lights focus in on you; the roaring ceases, and only a screaming static can be heard as though it's coming from within you, and you feel yourself somehow lifted into the air, then floating out of the window...

    700% slower might be creepy, but all I remember is that when I listened to this sound, it meant I had managed to connect to the internet, and that, back in the dial up days, was an achievement! This sound equals joy and fun and slow webpages and IRC channels and annoying blinking animated gifs:)

    • @TheJahGuy
      @TheJahGuy Před 7 lety +10

      "i had managed to connect to the internet" -> I can side with your joys, but this sound is the actual dialing, not only until the end did you know if you established a connection or not, so for me it was nerve-wrecking to see if I'd establish that connection or not, the joy only followed once this was done.

    The year is 2198. As you stumble across your attic, you find a really old computer at the size of a modern supercomputer along with a primitive display and pinpointing device. As you figure out how to use it, you find a picture of a fox hugging the abandoned planet. When you figure out how to run the primative package, You see a message appearing with the text "The World Wide Web has been deprecated since 2065, click here to relive the past 70 years of the internet". As you press the button, you see a extremely fast pasced slide show of thousands upon thousands of these things called " Web Sites". In your mind, you can hear this sound as you look in awe and wonder "What could this all be?". What remains, is a mystery that might never be solved.

It seemed like not long ago that I was renting VHS from Blockbuster and marveling at my family's Window XP, yet that has almost been 20 years ago. It recently occurred to me that the first season of the original Powerpuff Girls is as old to kids now as late 70's cartoons were to me when I was their age. I now know what my parents meant when they said that time flies when you're an adult.

    • @badegg4909

      Technically not true. if you're in a ship, that's pressurized you can hear anything in that ship, or the effects of space on that ship. Like the creaking of the hull as it thermally expands and contracts in the sun's rays.
      Furthermore he said "It reminds me of deep space" which is to say if he were given the task of representing deep space in a sound, he would give this as his reply. stars like echoes small points of light far away, but all he hears are the echoes. the stars could be long gone, the civilizations that give him orders or exist on those far away stars long since faded.
      The more reasonable critique would be "It makes me THINK" of deep space, because I don't think anyone has been in deep space.
      CAPTAIN SHITLORD! AWAAAY!

    • @ryonhovey4450
      @ryonhovey4450 Před 7 lety

      Kale Serpent I know they said it reminds them of deep space, but your first sentence does not make any sense, a ship could be in deep space but it is not deep space, if a little commit in deep space is zooming by, would you call that deep space? People may not have been in deep space, but we know for a fact that there is no sound there because sound waves need a medium to travel in, unlike EM waves which can travel through empty space. I support you standing up for this person and I know it is noble, but I love correcting people 😉

    • @badegg4909
      @badegg4909 Před 7 lety

      I don't follow your critique. *Comet
      ~oh wait, you're saying that even if the ship is in deep space, that's not the same as BEING deep space.... but by that logic all our experiences aren't the same as being wherever we are...... maybe? I don't think your counterpoint made sense. but thank you for posting, it brought me back to this awesome video :D

    • @ryonhovey4450
      @ryonhovey4450 Před 7 lety

    Takes you back in time. A 2400 bps modem was the first thing I ever installed on a computer. Was real proud of myself when it actually worked. But then I found out the mouse wouldn't work because they were sharing the same interrupt. The wonderful days of DOS 5.0. Back in '92 the internet existed but people were mostly unaware of it. People ran bulletin boards out of their bedrooms.

    Imagine this
    Your stuck inside a abandoned house. The PC still works and even the lights. You open AOL and dial the local number. Instead of a normal sound, this plays. The lights slowly black out while dialing until the only lights on is the PC, the telephone, the modem and the desklamp. Soon you hear "you've got mail" but creepily around the room. You get the torch and notice a TV, you turn it on but unexpectedly, you notice a AOL TV. You suddenly freak out until the AOL TV remote floats and blacks you out. 1 year later, you woke up in a hospital with all the electronics. The nurse says "Either you were in a coma or you got mail" until the hospital fades back into the house. The lightbulbs work again but you hear "YOU GOT MAIL, YOU GOT PICTURES" repeatly around you until again, it turns pitch black and instead of a hospital, you woke up after having a seizure. It was all over.
