One movie that doesn't get much air time is ''The Driver'' from 1978 by director Walter Hill and starring Ryan O'Neill as the get away driver in a bank heist and Bruce Dern as the bent cop. The movie features a ton of incredible driving stunts but may not technically be called a road movie and takes place inside the Los Angeles city limits. Still one of my all time favorites.

Lol... That was a great movie !! The only problem with it now days, is it isn't "politically correct", and the star of the film "uses drugs", and "treats women as objects". So, in todays world, he's a major loser.... 🙄🙄🙄
People my age, who actually remember those days, see it very differently than young people do now.
As for the Challenger in the film, they really put it threw the mill! They did some great stunts and driving in that film. Like many of these films, for many people, the car itself is the real 'hero' and why they watch it.
They made the car great in that film! And thats coming from someone who's never been a fam of the Challenger. They look okay, and perform well enough, I just never liked the way they drove. They were extremely similar in "feel", to all of the other Chrysler products at the time. The best thing Chrysler dis back in those days, was when they added the torsion bar suspension on some of their vehicles. Anything that had torsion bar front end, IMO, drove and handled beautifully. Thats probably why my favorite models of that time, were the big, full size sedans. Fury III etc.. And the ultimate IMO, the 1970 Sport Fury III GT...

Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry was one of our favorites, I believe the ‘72 & ‘73 Dodge Polaras used in the film were all former CHP units, as their black & white paint pattern was consistent with the CHP back then. They were 440 cars & ran fairly well despite being lower compression then the older ones, then the shot of the 390 that was supposed to be in the ‘67-‘68 Mustang At 4:55 actually had a factory a/c unit as well. It's the first time I'd ever seen any narrative that would suggest that any policeman would consider grabbing the money for himself and not to solve the crime, or return the money... It was one of the first revelations that the world isn't perfect. It so impacted me that I had nightmares about policemen taking my stuff and no one to stop them. Dennis also had the Manson Family living at his house before the Tate/Labianca murders and couldn't get rid of them, so he moved out and put the house up for sale which is how he finally got them out of his hair.
And one of the Beach Boys songs was actually written by Charles Manson although they changed a few of the lyrics and the title of the song and never gave credit to Manson he did actually write it.

A movie that has achieved cult status in New Zealand, but is largely unknown elsewhere is “Goodbye Pork Pie” 1981, by Geoff Murphy (The Quiet Earth, Young Guns 2), which involves a yellow mini being pursued from one end of the country to the other. A restored director’s cut version was released in 2013 and Murphy’s son did an ill-advised remake in 2018, despite warnings from his father.
Murphy Snr also helmed another NZ set movie featuring a cross country chase entitled Never Say Die (1988), which also has its moments.

Dirty Marry and Crazy Larry is pretty good. One of the things that put it 4th (For me) was that I was not really a fan of Mary and her antics and I though Larry was a bit of a scumbag. True that was the role they were playing. But it just loses appeal for me JUST for that reason. It was a battle between that and White Lightning for the 3 spot. White Lightning won because it was so much fun and Burt was cool in that film. 2 HAD to be Running on Empty as it needs more recognition and the number 1 was done for real and is insane to think a famous director (In their own country) said "To hell with it." Imagine if Tarantino did this in LA today? Insane.

@@Statimtek yes I agree that 68-70 is the absolute best body style. That car in my opinion is one of extremely few that you could paint the most godawful color and it would still look killer! And I would like to expand on the wraparound bumper... I don't like the chrome wraparound. To have that much on the front of a vehicle and just a thin strip on the back just looks goofy to me. If its painted to match the rest of the car as I've seen on some early 70s mopars then it looks good. Its just the chrome I don't like.
