Opre Roma: Gypsies in Canada - PREVIEW

  • Purchase: www.der.org/films/opre-roma.html This film celebrates the culture and struggle of the Gypsy. There is a new generation of Roma who claim their Gypsy roots with pride, while fighting the myths that caused their parents to live in fear. They call themselves by their rightful name, the Roma. The Roma people have suffered almost a thousand years of persecution - from European Slavery to the Holocaust - yet they have survived as a unique global culture. The film explores the music and culture borne out of centuries of exile. Opre Roma invites you to a wedding and to an evening of flamenco dance, with songs from Turkey, Romania, Spain, the Czech Republic and Slovakia that relate a shared experience telling the story of what it means to be Roma.

Nice video. I am a Rom from Slovakia living in Ireland I never tell anyone that I am Rom because they will start to hate me straight away. Or they wouldn't know what a rom or romany is.

I am a first-generation Canadian of Romanichal / Romanisæl parentage and I was raised in this culture. There will always be bad apples in any group, but most of us were taught not to steal, not to lie, to work hard and respect our elders. True, we distrusted authority, especially the government, and we kept to ourselves and moved around a lot, but we were not bad people...just different.

Roma is part of my ancestry (Bukovina area) and people often ask me about my heritage. They're always confusing me for Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Lebanese, Egyptian or even Pakistani. I've only ever met a couple other Canadian Romas so it's nice to find a video on it. And to all the people who don't think much of the Roma people-I just have to say that we don't always fit your nasty stereotypes. I, myself have multiple University degrees and I'm in Grad. School with two jobs.

Why are the Sinti people which belong to the Romani are integrated in western europe. They are integrated because western europe today is not so racistic as eastern europe. I am a gipsy and i am proud of my heritage. I dont steal, i have school education and i'm working as wholesaler. Roma had a bad past in europe. It can be compared with afro american history. Romani people were slaves in Romania and Moldavia but today racistic hungarians romanians and slavic people dont want to know history.

As you can see these Roma have a spanish influence clearly when travelling from the East to the West and then to England and finally Canada they have become very culturally diverse and are nothing like Eastern european "Roma or Gypsies"

THANK YOU! THOUGH PLEASE DON'T USE THE G-WORD. I'm presumably full-blooded Roma. I was born in Hungary and only occasionally have relatively light skin do to health issues and the fact that my people were enslaved and raped mostly be Persians and Romanians, but these people are more White than anything. And the preferred umbrella term is Romani/y, not "Gypsy". I actually suffered as an infant in Hungary and my fraternal twin brother and I had to adopted by White Americans just to survive because according to the government, we were 100% Roma, even though partial Roma and Romani are still persecuted... I still suffer because not only am I Roma, I look it too. My twin and I are like only 2 of 6 legal international Roma adoptions in the past 20 years. Most Iberian Kale, Sinti and other groups, especially the Whiter-ones like the Romachical, are way better off and don't have to put their kids up for adoption for have them forcibly removed by the state for their own protection. I'm actually singled out for looking different and have to deal with racist international students who immediately peg me for a "gintao" or "zingaro". My brother and I even face racism when we visit Europe with our White family. I constantly have to explain to Americans that I'm not Arab, Jewish or Mexican, but I do lie and tell the that I'm Italian. When I tell White Hungarians that I'm Hungarian they call me a liar. But, this woman does know her stuff even though she is Romanichal and not Roma... She's not lying to people when she says' she's "British". She has mostly British DNA.

Racial purity is much more important to gypsies than it is to you. Also they have the sabor and tribes and traditions, to marry someone from outside the tribe makes the girl an outcast so i doubt it will happen for you. Also Serbs or Croats? The croats were the ones with Usase... couldn't care less , but I do wonder if you were there at all...

Roma/Gypsy people in eastern Europe are really discriminated against in every social area because they have another culture, type of skin and education. They had no access to education for centuries because of their ethnicity/color of skin and if they could go to school they were really pushed back/discriminated and the Roma student should work really hard.
The beginning of the racism began in Germany in world war II and then was extended in all Europe, in the communist regime. First of all, Hitler tried to kill all of the Roma. The following regime in Germany and Europe gives them no access to education to the Roma. The question is how is it possible that a child will have a job and money to survive without education in the future? Is not! That's why a lot of them are trying to survive. It is sad that Canada does not go back in history to see what the USA was doing with the African American citizens when they were free of slavery. The American counselors of the USA were giving them counseling support school, work, and social life.
Roma people want a better future in Canada for their children.
It is not easy to be discriminated in kindergarten, school and then at work to be fired when your boss finds out that you are a Roma!
Sad that people, immigrants from Canada discriminated Roma people cause they should remember that they or their parents, grandparents or themselves were also refugees.
Many Romanians live on the brink of survival. Their rights are not respected and they are not protected by the governing. For more details and information, please follow the link to see a reportage about Roma Romanians in Romanian 2019.: czcams.com/video/evKw1QhIPdo/video.html

I know there's something to 'blood,' but I think there's also something to 'spirit.' It's hard for me being 'Caucasian,' because I just fall into the background. It seems these days that (you're) not 'somebody' if you're not Jewish or some 'ethnic' background. Personally, I'd love to live more freely without governmental laws. So far the only place I feel I 'belong' is of some Rainbow gathering of some place or another. There, freaks are accepted, but really, all are accepted.
