Easter in Italy. Civil, religious and culinary traditions.
Welcome to my CZcams channel dedicated to Italian language and culture!
In this video we will discuss the Easter holidays in Italy and the many religious, civil and culinary traditions related to this important time of year.
Easter is one of the most heartfelt and eagerly awaited holidays in our country, a time full of meanings, ancient rituals and moments of sharing that are rooted in Italy's thousand-year history.
Religious traditions are obviously linked to Christian Easter, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In Italy, the Easter season begins with Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter, characterized by prayer, fasting and abstinence.
Holy Week arrives, with religious celebrations reaching their peak on Good Friday, the day on which Christ's crucifixion is re-enacted, and Easter Sunday, the most important feast of Christianity.
During the period those evocative processions take place, with statues depicting episodes from the Passion of Christ.
Among the most famous are the procession of the Mysteries in Trapani, Sicily, and the Good Friday procession in Romagnano al Monte, Basilicata.
In Milan, on the other hand, the traditional rite of the Coronation of the Crucifix takes place.
In Rome, the Urbi et Orbi blessing of the Pope takes place in St. Peter's Square on Easter morning.
But Easter is not only a religious celebration; it is also a time of joyous civil festivities and folk traditions.
A very old and cherished custom is to give chocolate eggs, large or small, especially to children, with the inevitable surprise inside.
Traditionally, while Easter Sunday is a day to spend with the family, Easter Monday or "Pasquetta," which is a public holiday, provides an opportunity to organize outings and picnics in the open air, with friends, in nearby or distant locations.
We come, finally, to the unmissable culinary traditions of this period.
The main dish of Italian Easter is undoubtedly roast lamb with potatoes, a clear symbol of Christian Easter.
But other specialties cannot be missed either: the Easter pizza, a savory rustic dish stuffed with cold cuts and cheeses in a variety of regional shapes,
Easter doves, dove-shaped sweets that represent peace and rebirth, and of course hard-boiled eggs, decorated and colored to symbolize fertility and new life.
In short, Easter in Italy is a truly unique time, an interweaving of sacred and profane, faith and joy, worship and conviviality.
A heartfelt celebration in every corner of the Peninsula, with very ancient rites handed down from generation to generation.
A very rich cultural heritage that every Italian lives with enormous participation and that deserves to be known and appreciated all over the world.
I hope this video has enabled you to fully understand the wonderful Easter traditions of the Belpaese.
I wish you all the best in experiencing and breathing this very special atmosphere, perhaps spending an Easter in Italy!
