    Windows 98 will work just fine with USB 2.0 PCI or PCIe (these are rare) or PCIe-PCI bridge. I tried all combinations. What you need to do is to manually add PCI bus through the add new hardware manager. I think Omores has a video on it and also some articles.

    About the VDD error, for my MSI GTX 1060 I found different VBIOS versions on the msi forum, some VBIOS version fixed the VDD error and it allowed me to boot in win98 but starting dos games or opening command prompt would freeze the system with the monitor turning off.
    Last week I think I added audio and internet(using usb ethernet adapter) to win98 on z690, I saw your video and I thought to make a video about it too, and I did, I uploaded it today.

    One issue I've got, at least in Virtual Box, is mine recognises 1022MB RAM and my Ryzen 3 4100 no problem.
    The issue for me is that I can't for the life of me understand why it's 2MB short of 1GB RAM... I've changed no files since I installed it, got past the "illegal operation" popup by spam clicking the X button on it instead of close, but the 2MB off of one gig is really bugging me lmao.
    I've modified my native Win98 to my own "Windows 98 CE: Custom Edition" as opposed to the "CE Compact Embedded" and honestly, now I've got Intel Arc GPU drivers working, Steam functioning, all 16GB of RAM and the .Net framework working on it for PaintDotNet, I'm going to daily drive my custom Windows 98 out of spite for Microsoft's Windows 11 shenanigans.

    • @koigoi
      @koigoi Před měsícem

      how in the hell did you get 16GB of ram working? Afaik, theres no x64 version of Windows 98. Also steam??? how???

    • @BlueEyedVibeChecker
      @BlueEyedVibeChecker Před měsícem

      @@koigoi Same way people make custom Linux distros, I'm just doing the same to a formerly obsolete version of Windows.
      (Incoming wall of text alert)
      There are still some issues with it, the RAM works fine, but the CPU is running at 2GHz as opposed to the stock 3.9GHz since the faster clock speeds often messed with system processes; I'm currently configuring the system to work with faster speeds.
      The same goes for the SSD, I've had to limit the speed of my SSD to SATA 3 since SATA 4 often goes too fast and crashes things.
      As for the 64 Bit part, I've tweaked, rebuilt and recompiled the OS for 64 Bit support. First via a compatibility layer with varied results, currently native. It's why I call it "98 Custom Edition" as opposed to just 98 since it's fundamentally the same thing, but completely different in what it can do.
      There are some cons I still need to work on though, it is still capped at 60Hz regardless of the resolution. Though it now supports true 64 Bit colour as opposed to the stock 16 Bit colour limitation, so it's a fine trade off for now.
      Another con is that UEFI is functional but has stability issue over CSM/Legacy BIOS. This will be the main issue I need to fix since CSM is obsolete.
      And finally, storage, SSDs are still too fast without further tweaks, however it only recognises 4TB maximum which may be a problem for modern gaming or productivity.
      It's a lot of hassle, but 98 is my favourite OS of all time, so I'm rather enjoying it so far. It still plays my old PC CD games, and runs most newer games without issue, so hopefully I can make this a viable option in the near future.

    I had the slowness problem trying to install 98 on a more modern system, as far as I know, Windows 98 does not know what to do with the chipset and IDE drivers, and defaults to some very slow basic drivers it has. On my experience every time I did anything IO intensive on the storage device the mouse cursor would stutter or even freeze completely until the operation (file copy or installing stuff) was done. Very crappy experience without proper drivers.

      Kind of. Drivers will be a major pain depending on what hardware is in the machine. Modern GPU's don't have Win 7 support. If your PC doesn't have CSM support in the motherboard, you'll need to create an installer disk that can properly boot in UEFI mode. Steam no longer supports Win 7, any games using DX12 won't run etc etc. It's asking for a lot of pain
