If your budget is under 500, look at pre-owned i5 or ryzen 5 dell or lenovo machines. That xps 15 he was talking about can be got now for €450 online in a shop near me, and it's still plenty powerful.

I mean, the surface go he recommended is 600-ish usd, that is the top-of-the-line of what I'd call affordable in my student years. And it's actually a touch screen laptop.
So I saw the video, saw the comments, and thought I may help someone if I write a summary from some of the suggestions in the comments. I started this, then realised this will vary greatly in options and prices depending on the area in the world, so general recommendations instead:
Firstly, aiming at getting a decent laptop computing experience for students work, ignoring gaming.
Limit budget to £400 max., second hand, there are plenty of choices from about 150 to 400.
8GB RAM minimum.
SSD upgrade must be possible and can be later but necessary ASAP. You can put an original drive in a USB case for backup or storage so no waste.
min 4 cores
1.3 or more GHz
Then find something that works for you for size, screen size, weight, and ports. With screen size, don't forget resolution, brightness and contrast. Some screens are pretty poor.
Most students are young and should be able to carry most laptops, so for most "light weight" and "compact" should not be the highest priorities. If you can't plug-in in most locations, battery life should be a major priority. The older the machine, the worse the battery normally gets.
Used business machines can be great since they usually have good keyboards, screens, parts availability, and are quite rugged so can take a lot of moving about.
If you have particular needs, such as recording, video processing, etc, then you may need to invest more.
I'm writing this on a hp Elitebook 8440p with 4GB RAM and 118GB SSD, second hand business laptop. My second 4GB would not recognize due to a problem with the memory slot- a risk buying second hand. It is perfectly useable for home work, but the battery life is about 20 mins, so only used plugged in! Not quite matching the specs I recommend hence why I was watching this video in the first place! For work I have a Yoga 12 but I find the screen too small and hard to see - the touch screen tech seems to result in less clear screens. I don't think doing a degree on a 12" screen makes sense. You could plug a 12" laptop into a monitor in your room, but then that reduces the budget for the laptop! 14" or 15" minimum for working on. 17" if you want to use it to watch films with friends.

I have one and the battery really isn't helping me survive through college. especially since most $300 thinkpads have a battery lifespan of a firefly
lol i was happy AF i bought 4 think pads at $25 pp yes 25 $, a local company was outfitting all their buildings with much much newer equipment so i managed to pick up bunch for $100 total, upgrade and sold =$$$
My $167 ThinkPad T430 came with a brand new battery, about 6 hour lifespan with my dGPU model. I went old because Ivy Bridge is still useful today.

284 is a budget, that’s cheap. If you want lower I’ll say get a used one because those cheap ones from Walmart are going to drive you crazy. If you have a job save 30% of your monthly income, cut food and coffee and drinks and you save up to buy a decadent 300 one.

Confused about what? Buying a new laptop for school? I got a surface go as my gift just weeks ago and I would say it’s worth it. The only bad part is the accessories. The surface go is $400 (without tax) but with the keyboard and pen, it’s $128 & $169 = $297. So in total it would be $697 *not included tax*

Yeah don’t get me wrong, those are great computers but even if you can’t downlod something because you have a chrome book, there are still other supplementable websites for example chrome books won’t allow you to use Microsoft stuff so you can easily find online free versions of Microsoft office and excel etc
I got an off-lease Thinkpad X240 for $200, Haswell i5 and the 70-something Wh battery make for excellent battery life and perfectly acceptable performance. The only upgrades it needed were the X250 touchpad and the FHD IPS panel, bringing the price to around $300. Awesome laptop for the money, would recommend if you're on a budget and need something compact with excellent keyboard and battery life.

Alright everyone *actually* on a budget, just a buy a ThinkPad. the older gen X1 carbons are literally dirt cheap w 8gb ram, i7 cores and are easily upgradeable.
Hell if you can use Linux you can go as far back as the T420 or T400.
