  • Magic is a game, but what does that mean? I'll go over some of the historical definitions of games and play, then break down how modern minds in play would update those definitions to better reflect the reality of play as a social construct.

This is a great video! I love the deep exploration into the subject matter. I also really enjoyed the production value - having the visual aides pop-up was really smooth and clever.
I like the conclusions and you made wa strong case for them, but they feel incomplete. Just as saying play is freedom or voluntary ignores some aspects of play, the concepts presented in the conclusion also seem to narrow the definition of play. I would add that play encourages us to explore reality - and to test it. This is perhaps implied by one and two, but not explicit. This seems like a good aspect of play to enumerate, because even play that reinforces the biases of reality can help reveal those biases and make us question reality.
“Play can reduce freedom” also seems one-sided. Wouldn’t it be better to build that out to note that play can be freeing or reduce freedom? The salient point there seemed to be that play that reduces freedom ought to be spoiled.
Thanks again for this video. Really interesting to think about! I can’t wait for the next one!

Thank you very much, for both the complements and the thoughts!
Your point about play as both a representation and challenge to reality is an important one one. Dr. Trammell gets a bit into how play encourages us to explore the biases of reality in the extended interview, although I wish I had included in this now. It's a really key point that definitely deserves to be on the list as well, especially when we're talking about modern games (but even classic ones like Monopoly).
I think I meant to use "can" to imply that it can be freeing (and it definitely can be). That's going to be a good lesson on making those kinds of dualities clear!
I'm still new to this, hopefully the next video will be ready before 3021 :)
