  • **CORRECTION**: at 12:00 the video references a concept named “histability”. This was a mistranscription of the word “digestability”. Sorry for the mistake!
Ever wondered why food tokens heal you? In this episode of Search Your Library, I trace the trope of "healing food" back through the history of gaming, then to the the traditions of indigenous Mayan food practice.
Featuring an interview with Miguel Cuj, Anthropology Ph.D. candidate at Vanderbilt University. Check out his research here:

the strangest thing in my view is how food, consisting of natural meat, vegetables and fruits etc are classed as artifacts, the most un-natural there is.

      Interesting point!
Technically, food does count as artifacts in the archaeological sense, but I imagine that’s not what MtG designers are going for, haha

@@searchyourlibrary and of course they have to work within the limits of the categories present in the game. I always think of the Rockbiter from Never Ending Story, nibbling on raw stone and metal constructs, when I think of justifying food as artifacts.

That’s so kind of you to say!
That said! If you’re looking for recommendations, there’s Spice8Rack for more similar-ish politically minded content, or the Archive Arcanum (theaabc.buzzsprout.com) podcast for media. Cheers!

Love to see someone recognizing Dave Arneson as the original creator of D&D! Also super interesting to hear about the connection between food and healing in indigenous Mayan culture. Excellent video!

    Why does food heal you?
Because technically for real... That is what it does.

This is way too high quality/effort to have this low a view count.
