Hi Cash! In the first song, “No filipinos allowed” and the St. Louis world fair is a direct reference to discrimination filipinos in America faced during the era when the US colonized the Philippines. As America do with immigrants, Filipinos were ogled at as essentially a “savage natives” type zoo at the Worlds fair. Ironically, many of the Filipinos in this exhibit were actually Filipinos who were studying in American universities but to get a paycheck to support themselves played the part of a “savage”. And “no Filipinos allowed” was a common signage in communities with a large Filipino immigrant population like Cali, as Americans feared for the safety of their jobs and the “purity” of their (white) women. There’s a ton of other references to the sad oppression Filipinos faced in the music video, and it’s a very cool concept. I imagine it’ll be shown in many an ethnic studies class (hopefully) cuz it also slaps!

Yes!! And to add to the part of "is he about to get shot," white people felt very threatened by Filipino men taking their women because at first only Filipino men came to the states. They attacked Filipinos and even destroyed Little Manila in Stockton, CA because racism. Another good one by Alamat to react to is Dagundong which just came out and is about Spanish colonization and how the US said they'd help PH gain independence but the colonized us for 50 years. They're so good about teaching history!!

ALAMAT is the Philippines' first multilingual idol group, so it's awesome to see you reacting to them. Honestly, most P-Pop groups ARE multiethnic and multilingual, because the Philippines is already so diverse. But ALAMAT is the first to really embrace it. The fits in "Say U Love Me" are modernized versions of precolonial Visayan aesthetics!
Some more multilingual ALAMAT songs I hope you'll react to: their debut "kbye," "ABKD," and "Day and Night" (English/Bisaya/Tagalog)

Omg saame! I discovered them like months ago and I can't stop listening to their songs! I wanna see Alamat when I visit the Philippines. I guess it makes more sense to be shirtless because they live in the tropics! Not complaining tbh 😂

Most of their silhouettes and fashion reference and take inspiration from Philippine indigenous silhouettes, indigenous textiles and fabrics, and hence less shirts are seen. But, yes! Their music and videos incorporate our PH local language, culture, musical instruments and many others and I'm glad they do that, bringing our colorful and rich, diverse culture to a broader stage.

Kasmala is the rearrangement of the word (anagram literary device) malakas, which is - yes - strong or strength, depending on the context one is using it for
MOST of Alamat's works are with Filipino historical and cultural themes/topics
Alamat is MOST DEFINITELY NOT INSPIRED BY Kpop, NOT from music composition, arrangement, dance, clothes, etc

This song I think is about American exploitation to the Filipinos. I'm not too sure though. You can try checking the historian's reaction to this song to know more.

Love Alamat, so talented. I'd recommend their tracks Gayuma and Aswang for further spiciness and lack of shirts, Dagundong is another history lesson one and Ily Ily is just so emotional. Truly tho all their tracks are great.

I wonder if Say You Love Me MV's different outfits is because of the lyrics wondering about why the girl feels differently about them now. Would she prefer them being bad boys or emotional boys, which one would bring her back? Or maybe it's just me.

Hi there!...since i know you're also a fan of BINI...you might also want to check out Alamat's Maharani...BINI Jhoanna plays the titular Maharani... it's also full of Filipino culture like the feature of (reverse) Singkil..which is normally a dance the females does in front of the king so he can choose a queen..they did it in a way that the men are presenting themselves to the woman so she can choose her partner

omg, they look so impossibly young. i like that you're exploring the "kpop genre" from other countries. it was interesting to see some bl fan service since that has become such a staple. with the rise of the filipino bl industry as well as other asian countries it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. i mean, even as homophobic as south korea is, they're cranking out those bl dramas and giving bl fan service. it's great to see more diversity but it's also weird since so much of it seems oriented to the western gaze--thanks colonialism! i think this will be an interesting and entertaining direction for you to explore.

@@CashMonet like anything else, it's a super mixed bag. it is interesting that they seem to be expanding their storylines. after the big success of kinnporsche--which is a gangster/thriller/action series--i've noticed more storylines in different genres. the thai industry is the biggest and they tend to have a lot of draaaammmmaaa. but honestly, thai lakorns are usually bananapants as well. i find bl fascinating since it's sorta queer content but designed for the straight female gaze--the fruit fly effect. i only think of bl as tangentially queer since that's not the core audience. i don't know why it feels different to me but it does. i guess it's like how i consider queer women's films (even porn) and girl-on-girl films in different ways. one is for queer view and the other is for straight view. ok, this is me stopping my tedtalk, lol. no one needs ajumma nattering on.
