How to recognize similar sounding and similar looking characters:
同音字 sound alike 形近字 look alike
偏旁部首 distinguish them by their determinant and classification (pianpang, bushou)
飘 漂 floats through the air floats on water
纱 沙 yarn sand
密 蜜 secret honey
燥 躁 dry impatient
组词 word formation: added word.
鱼 渔 fish fisherman
坐 座 sit seat
造句 sentence formation

This lesson provides several examples of characters which sound alike 同音字 but are different, as well as characters which sounda like and also look alike. 形近字 Often 形近字 can be distinguished from each other semantically so for example fish 鱼, fishermen 渔, the latter having the three dots of water determinant added. Likewise, 形近字 often differ visually to reflect different grammatical functions such as noun, verb, or adjective oneo of the cannonical examples is 坐 座 one is a verb the other a noun, the noun has a roof on top so 座=seat and 坐=sit.
I shall watch this again and then try to make a list of all the characters presented.
