  • www.aussiesaddles.com - Colin Dangaard shows you some tips and trick to keeping your Australian Horse Saddle health for long life.
    Watch Colin take this old busted-up saddle and turn it into a saddle that will have another 10 years to it.
    l. First thoroughly clean the saddle with SADDLE SOAP, using a soft bristle brush to get into the pores of the stitching, etc. Wash off the suds with clean water, then towel dry. Then let dry naturally on a sunny day. Will take maybe three hours. It is not necessary to take the saddle apart to do this!,
    2. Use LEATHER KEEP to work over any scratches on the saddle. Rub this product into the scratched leather, using a metal ball, as found on a ball pane hammer. The bottom of a glass bottle or glass tumber will also work.
    3. Use WENOL to polish the brass, starting with a cotton cloth, then finishing with a paper towel.
    4. Use the enclosed brush to apply a single coating of the SADDLE OIL.(Do not get oil on the sheepskin!) Let the oil soak in before the next step.
    5. Use the supplied square of sheepskin, permeated with ONE STOP for the second and final application. Only one pass is needed. Let dry. This product will leave a thin film of beeswax that, when buffed with a paper towel, will give your leather a lively luster!
    6. Return the sheepskin to the ziplock bag, stow it in the barn and, thereafter, once a week, lightly rub the sheepskin over the saddle. If you spend longer than one minute doing this you are wasting time!
    7. Depending on conditions where you ride, it is a good idea to repeat all the above at least once a year. Kit

    This helped SO MUCH I got a English saddle that had sat in a storage container most likely untouched for 40 years. It looks like a whole new saddle now! Thank you so much!

    I used this process on my English saddle, This saddle was sitting in my grandparents basement for at least 25 years, before that a guy had used when he was leasing my grandparents land for his horse, and this has worked like MAGIC!! This saddle is looking new and I've only put a couple of layers of oil and cleaned it. I recommend this technique to EVERYBODY who is restoring a saddle.

    You can turn the can around and Hide the label but I know you have Jay-El Beeswax treatment!!! You said the most important thing at 4:09 don't use beeswax on tooled leather. I did it and am still trying to get it out! Great description and I have found this to be the best way to care for english saddles. The one thing you left out that one of your sales guys at equine affaire told me is if you have mold you gotta use hydrogen Peroxide. Thanks Colin

    for 5o+ years I was told to rub in that saddle soap with the least amount of water and that was all the saddles needed. No wonder they were tuff grizzled leathery hard things like me. Same with my boots. Holy cow, I would burst my sides out of my boots in less than 2 months and have to duct tape them to wear them. It seems like when I put on oil it would never sink in and left a greasy coated feeling on my bridles and reins.
    Ok! I have a original De Kunnfy dressage saddle in buffalo brown leather with doubled panels and flaps the I checked out tonight. Holy wah! That beauty is stiff as a plank. If it is NOT RAINING tommorow for once, I am going to take a horse brush and glycerin saddle soap and scrub that puppy till its gaggin. Then with the grace of God there will be sun (oh please please) and let it dry. Do you recommend also scrubbing the billets? The saddle underside is wool flocked, so will water hurt it? Let the saddle dry somehow, if no sun I am using my blow dryer.

    Hey I went to EquineAffare this year in Columbus Ohio there were 40,000 of my closest friends there. The demo guy never mentioned hydrogen peroxide - was that for mold? How the heck do you get that beeswax outta the stamps? I bought a fabulous R.W.Bowman saddle and want to keep it showroom condition. Jury still out if I can flexarize the deKunnfy I won at dressage show back in 1987. Thanks Hope to hear from you!

      They're also the most comfortable style saddle (in my humble opinion). The knee rolls and the high cantle make for a very secure seat that you can ride in for long, hard hours without discomfort.

    comment 2- slob on beeswax and wait overnight and buff it a little. so is that it or do I need to put on Leather Keep, of which I have and LOVE? I bought it and the demonstrator said it was for everything. Now I am finding out its good for scratches. Next time, after a not messy ride, but with dry sand and dirt, should I saddle soap wash and leather oil again or just go to the mixture of oil and beeswax?
    What do I do with my western saddle its pretty plain but does have tooling along the edges and leather rosettes and strings? Do I toothbrush out the beeswax or oil and brush it out of the design? So many questions!
    I won the deKunnfy in a show, and I bought the R.W. Bowman for its quality and thickness of leather all around. Want to keep these babies showroom sharp!
    Thank you so much!!!!! -Sheri

    • @spannerclyde6832
      @spannerclyde6832 Před 7 lety +2

      Well, don't follow these exact steps if you've got a synthetic saddle, most English are, especially Wintec. Synthetic saddles can get wet and be totally fine, however real leather saddles can get wet but must be towelled off after or left in the sun to dry. If it gets wet and if left in a dark place or simply put away it can cause issues, but as long as you dry it in the sun or wipe it down, it will be fine

    Just got a new Aussie saddle, is not second hand. Is it safe to wash and oil it right now, it is brand new and don't want to ruin it, thanks for any help with my question.

    • @spannerclyde6832
      @spannerclyde6832 Před 7 lety

      It is safe it wash and oil at any time, but there's not much use doing it if it doesn't need it. Remember to check if it's leather or synthetic

    • @spannerclyde6832

      Water does not damage saddlery if it is towelled down afterwards or left in the sun. If you wet it and then leave it in the shade or put it away, then it will get damaged
