TR&CI 115: What Happens When A Mana Ability Conflicts With A Cost Reduction? Steps To Casting Spells

  • In this episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be talking about the steps to casting a spell, a classic boogeyman of confusion in Magic. Specifically in this case I'll be covering how a cost reduction dependent on the Toughness of your creature does or doesn't conflict with it's mana ability that to activate results in it having less Toughness.

    Ah! Aas a Yawgmoth/Wall of Roots enthusiast I was aware of the "locked" casting cost. And great reminder about multiple activations! Always nice to have these videos, and much appreciated!

      Yeah, a lot of my earlier videos had bad audio and I was still learning how I wanted to present things. I've wanted to revisit a lot of them just for that alone, but also doing them with updated cards from recent releases is nice too.

      Yeah, this shows up all the time with Affinity (or pseudo Affinity for Emry). It's so cool to see new forms of the cost reducers and I really hope that WotC keeps pushing out more and more.

    This is also very important for when you’re using Treasure mana to cast spells with affinity for artifacts

      @ThisIsACommanderChannel  Před 6 měsíci

      For sure, that's probably the most common situation in which something like this comes up. I like seeing cost reductions like these and I look forward to seeing the other kinds that WotC comes up with.

    I like your bit at the end about remembering that you still have 2 other players to kill. Drawing 15 cards or 30+ is great and all, but when you're only dealing 3 or 6 damage for that amount, yeah, you've got a lot more progress to go through. I can see people milling themselves out with this dude sometimes. Which sounds awesome!

    • @ThisIsACommanderChannel
      @ThisIsACommanderChannel  Před 6 měsíci

      HA! Yeah, that is likely to happen. Drawing 60 cards is A LOT and of course you don't have to use the ability again, but still... dang that's a lot of cards to go through in 1 turn for just 6 damage (hopefully more).

    7:04 Nah, “decking yourself” is still used for if you empty your whole library. “Milling yourself” would be for if you’re only milling part of your library. This is especially true when you’re decking yourself through drawing cards instead of milling cards.

    • @ThisIsACommanderChannel

      Ah, that's very cool to hear that that phrase is still sticking around. My playgroup hears me say all the old terms all the time so I'm in a bit of an echo chamber for when I hear them say that stuff. I still like to call the color combinations the crappy names we had for them back in the day too, but I have gotten a lot better at learning their new names post-Ravnica.

  • @catoticneutral

    So what you're saying is that a card that costs less based on how many untapped lands you control would be *really* funny.

    • @ThisIsACommanderChannel
      @ThisIsACommanderChannel  Před 6 měsíci +4

      That would be pretty crazy of WotC to make a card like that. Oh my! That's a similar-ish thing to how WotC have never printed a Creature that has Deathtouch and Trample printed on itself, they know that a majority of players wouldn't understand how the card would work in a lot of situations.

      @@Cnvvj Oh snap, that's evil. If that's the case, you should look into adding Homeward Path to some of the decks you play against your friend with regularly, if your deck is very dependent on your Commander. I would also suggest Sword of Hearth & Home. I LOVE that Sword because that "exile up to one target creature you own" thing is so good at getting back any creatures that are stolen of yours. The best is when it's on a Commander of yours, they steal it, and you just leave the Sword on the Commander so that when they attack with it you just flicker itself from them triggering the Sword. Love it!

      I made an Arcades deck back when he released and it is a fun deck but a little too... Simple... Not sure if simple is the right word, I like aggressive attack focused decks, but being focused around 'creatures that happen to have Defender' there just wasn't much creativity or customization I could do. My deck list looked too similar to other people's Arcades' decks. This bugged me cause I like my decks to run a lot of stuff people don't usually see.

    Would sacrificing a creature after it is tapped to Ashrod's Alter for 2 colorless mana work for convoke as well?
    Thanks for these videos. It's lit, no cap, slay.

    • @ThisIsACommanderChannel
      @ThisIsACommanderChannel  Před 6 měsíci

      Sadly, you wouldn't be able to sacrifice a Creature to the Altar and then also use it for Convoke. The sacrifice to the Altar is a Mana Ability so it must be done during that part of casting the spell, but then Convoke isn't done until the step when payments are made. Convoke isn't a Mana Ability, just an ability that allows you to tap the creatures down to help pay for the cost, which is after the Altar sac is done.

    I think this video is the perfect length video. Not to short not to long. Sweet tech here. I have a request video. There is a card called Platinum Emperion, can you do a video on the things that card prevents you from doing, and another request is a combo I never quite understood. Here's the combo (knuckles crack) you control Caged Sun (naming forest or green). You also control Karn, Silver Golem, and Ashaya, Soul of the Wild. You use Karn, Silver Golem's ability to turn Caged Sun into a creature. I was told from many sources that this makes Infinite mana. I don't understand how

    • @ThisIsACommanderChannel
      @ThisIsACommanderChannel  Před 6 měsíci

      Oh yeah, I actually did do an episode a loooooong time ago, like 2 years ago, that touched on Platinum Emperion and how it can shut off some kinds of payments. It's a long video, like over 17 mins but the PE part is around the 9 min mark. I'll for sure get around to revisiting my earlier videos subjects one day cause the audio quality was rough back then.
      As for your question about Caged Sun, yes, that will result in an infinite mana combo, but probably not in the way you would want it to be. It will actually end up in a draw, unless you have some way to interact with the Sun and kill it. It becoming a creature from Karn will then cause it to become a Land Forest in addition to its types since it's not a token. The Sun has a Triggered Mana Ability that will trigger every single time any ability of a land adds mana, this would typically be applied to an Activated Ability but with the wording here it just cares about any ability that adds the mana. So with the Sun now a Land, it will tap for mana, causing it to trigger and make a mana, and now because that Triggered Ability made a mana, it will trigger again, and because that Triggered Ability made a mana, it will trigger again, etc.... See how that loop happens? And because it isn't a "may" it will just happen endlessly and the game will have to end in a draw.

    Hey man, I have a question about something kind of on this topic and I googled it but didn't find anyone talking about it. How does Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma work with reducing the cost of Psychosis Crawler if you have 4 cards in hand including the Crawler, isn't it not in your hand when you lock in the cost, so it wouldn't reduce the cost.

    • @ThisIsACommanderChannel
      @ThisIsACommanderChannel  Před 5 měsíci

      Oh, now that is indeed a really interesting question. If you don't mind, I can get a video on this one. I'm currently working on tomorrow's video but I'm sick, again, and not sure I can talk for as long as this current script is getting to be. I just keep coughing a lot. I can do anonymous reference if you want in the video, I know a lot of people don't like for their name to show up in the video.
