Is it me or Het Wilhelmus was originally written in German because Dutch was not still standarized and was considered a German dialect? Also, as far as I know there are some Eastern regions of the Netherlands with either speak German or German dialects.
Wilhelmus at one point merely ruled the Germanic State of Nassau which spoke the west German dialect of Dutch at the time. Before WW2 and WW1 the relationship ships of the Germanic nations Prussia and The Netherlands were on edge with the whole fact of unification but nonetheless the people of the nations were relatively close despite the acceptance of Dutch independence. The line “I am of German blood” was written in the original version as a reflection of the the Netherlands original German state of Nassau before the war with Spain.
Nassau is in Hesse, or Hessen in German, it is quiet far from the Netherlands. The Dutch language is a standardized variation of most lower franconian dialects while Hessen speaks Rheinfranconian dialects. Lower Franconian is a dialect continuum with lowgerman. Rhinefranconian dialects are central german dialects, closer to Luxembourgian, Thuringian or Saxon.@@Central_Intelligence_Agency_
