EPIC Adventure Motorcycle Riding in Colorado (USA) (Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally)
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 6. 08. 2024
- I was fortunate to be one of a few journalists invited to Colorado, USA, to put the new Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally to the test. From incredible paved mountain passes, to rocky, steep and snowy off road trails, we pushed the limits of the Multistrada and found it surprisingly capable. With extreme levels of power, technology, and performance, the new Multistrada V4 Rally is one of the top motorcycles in the world. Can it really be better than a BMW R1250GS, Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally, or KTM 1290 Adventure? #adv #motorcycle #advrider #dualsport #multistrada #ducati #travel #adventure

This is more an adventure film than a motorcycle review, so here is my summary of the new Multi V4 Rally. Pros: Amazing technology, incredible engine power, very comfortable, great wind protection, great suspension performance on and off road, high build quality, long maintenance intervals (and no desmo). Cons: Expensive (30k USD +), tall and a little top heavy, crash bars should have been standard. Overall, I'd say it's one of the best performing motorcycles in the world currently. It's off road ability is surprising, although for true off road, a smaller, lighter, less expensive bike would be better. Thanks for watching, and thanks to Ducati for inviting me. PS: This is not a paid promo, it costs me money and time to go film these reviews. Making this film is actually a business loss for me, contrary to a few comments suggesting a paid review. OEMs do not, and cannot, pay journalists.

It was definitely more filmy and artistic than a review. Great job!!
What was the location of the waterfall? This was a beautiful video. This may be my replacement for my 1290 SA. It's definitely at the top of the list. Going to be on CO. Rt.550 in 7/24. Great insight on the Rt and excellent job. This gets me charged for the ride out from Pa.
Ian I want to give you props for your courage on numerous levels with this video. 1) Making the investment to attend and be a part of this group 2)Riding that heavy beast over Cinnamon Pass and 3)Trying a new video style. I really enjoyed it. The cinematic along with the "regular Ian" was cool. You could have easily edited out the stopping and difficulty starting but you left it in - this gave absolute realism of what your watchers actually experience on a ride like this. Strong work my friend!
I appreciate that!
Absolutely!
Ian, could you have done this trip on the Suzuki 1050 DE with similar ease?
After seeing the unveiling of the new BMW GS 1300 and following Ian the last few years.
,his review on this Ducati V4 Rally has me leaving BMW after 14 years and putting together options for a new V4 Rally.Well done Ian...you call a spade a spade.
Wow Ian! You have taken it to a new level. I see now why it took a while for you to upload this. Great job. This is documentary level stuff here. Just wonderful! đđŒđđŒ
Glad you enjoyed it!
A LOT of moto journalists talk adv bikes. Not Ian. Ian lives that adv bike lifestyle. I ride the 23 RP, and would be hard pressed to take it on this ride. Itâs so tippy.
Challenging and beautiful ride. Big respect bro.
Credit to Ian for taking an unfamiliar bike through that terrain! Wet rocks, mud, cliffs, snow, with road biased tires on a big unfamiliar bike. Add in the stress of the event and being watched/ video'd. Nice job!
Yeah what tires was he riding on?
UmâŠ. Letâs be real.. my clapped out 1996 Honda Accord could make those roadsâŠ.Letâs get Ian on this bike and a trek through the Gobi desert, Amazon jungle or how about the Russian Tundra⊠yeah baby !
And in the end Ian will ponder : â why didnât I take my 660?ââŠ
@@ryanmalone2681 looks like Pirelli STRs. He would have been fine if the guys in front weren't so slow. One of the reasons I hate group rides too.
I've seen other videos of the Multistrada v4 rally reviews and I must say that this video is my favorite of all. Great job đ đ
Wow, thanks!
WOW what a video! The Rally is a BEAST! Also, that's a huge endorsement from you and Dusty that the Rally is better than the GS offroad! Thank you for the killer review!
What a ride!!!!! WOW! Iâm inâŠ.. this is my next bike!! Iâm from Phoenix⊠I really appreciated the comments on the heat the bike makes and how they have made efforts to manage it, riding with a motor that radiates too much heat really reduces the days you can ride here. We had 54 days over 110 this year, the heat has to be considered here.
One of the best videos you have made. Fantastic scenery!!! Complements from Portugal
Ian, really commend you on this video - despite a free (and really impressive) bike, wonderful location, free lodgings and food, this is a 100% work situation. Very professionally executed by you. Adventure, with a large unsoliceted group, and with so many strings attached is near impossible but you concentrated on the points that would be important for you viewers. Appreciated and thank you.
I felt every switch back with you, you handled it great! Normally one does not ride with such a heavy bike on the second day already over the Cinnamon Pass. Great shots and great honest editing of your report. Thanks a lot for that! đđŒ đđŒ đđŒ
Great stuff. Awesome to see the production quality improving, this is next level!
Much appreciated!
Seriously, your vids are just first rate. well done! They get better and better...
I think this video wins in a few categories, including best press release video, So thanks Ian and Ducati for putting the time and energy into it,
Glad you enjoyed it
This was an amazing video. I have owned several bikes over the years including the original multistrada 1100s. This is my dream machine and hopefully one day I will be able to acquire one. This video solidifies everything I want in a motorcycle. I am 6' 225lbs so I think this the perfect setup for me. Excellent film/review.
Your reviews are so encompassing, particularly with this adventure. It actually makes me want to entertain a motorcycle that I always thought was out of my league.
Enjoy, and keep up the great adventurous reviews đ
Just like an Indiana Jones suspense movie! Great landscape & music. Why the f⊠didnât Ducati equip those bikes with proper tires for this type of terrainâŠsometimes life has its mysteries! Good work Ian! Marc, Quebec, Canada đšđŠđđ
Awesome work Ian i really liked it and the music for the scenery + Ducati V4 Rally what a combo. Keep it up
Ian, I enjoy your honest take in all the reviews you do, this one takes it up a level. To hear the panic in your voice on a couple of "sticky" sections brings home the effort needed to ride these beasts of a bike off road (and at 12 000+ feet). Kudos! I'm from the UK and I've been fortunate to Ski in Colorado - Breckenridge, Steamboat and Winterpark to name a few - and I've got to agree with you the scenery is epic and, the altitude literally takes your breath away. Thank's Ian
So cool that you were asked to be on that test ride Ian! Love seeing my stomping grounds in your video. I ride a KLX 300 around the Lake City area and can't imagine doing what you all did and made it look easy. Congrats!
Dang! You have the ADV riding skills for any terrain! Very impressive.
This was so awesome Ian - loved every minute of the review and your narration.
It is so rare to see this type of review without all the bravado and macho crap other reviews tend towards.
A real world reflection, from a real world rider - in an honest format - is what we all appreciate.
Go well, Sir!
Absolutely awesome video Ian. Really enjoyable. Thank you.
Man, what an adventure and what a great video! Huge kudos to the photo/video and drone crew too. That was an epic amount of work. I like the footage at the end of your video, showing the chassis stability as the suspension was working. Jason Chinnock is not your average CEO, for sure. Heâs truly a fellow enthusiast, and itâs always fun to speak with him. Itâs hard to imagine most CEOs putting themselves out there (way out there) in such challenging situations, on both the V4 Rally and the Desert X (as seen in the three part series on Moto Geo). I owned the 1260 Enduro and put a lot of miles on it, although not in conditions as shown here. Itâs clear the engineers worked hard to beef up the bike overall, such as changing the mounting system for the brake and clutch reservoirs, and moving the front turn signals off of the front mirrors. Itâs also great that they took steps to make the tall, heavy bike more approachable with the preload release system as well as the seat redesign. This video shows conclusively that the Rally is the real deal, not a boulevard cruiser that simply looks like an adventure bike. I currently have the Pikes Peak, which is equally impressive, though configured for a completely different mission of course. Congratulations on your ride as well as on producing such an engrossing and informative video.
Really inspiring on so many levels! Excellent content Ian!! Keep up the great work!
After 11K kilometer with the Rally in Central Europe, I so far never had an issue with the bike. It is the touring machine with the highest price in Europe but you get what you pay for. Top notch parts where ever you look. In very thight corners on alpine passes, the bike has excellent low speed manuverability. High speed on German Autobahn also is no problem at all. Same applies for gravel roads. I am not doing the rough stuff with it. Good job Ducati.
After watching all of your videos on the Multistrada V4S, this video on the Rally, and then the video on the Grand Tour. I went and looked at what everyone else was saying. I just purchased a 2023 V4 Rally that I will probably use more like the Grand Tour or the V4S but with the benefits of the extra fuel capacity. Honestly, I have an Aprilia Tuareg 660 that I've been riding for offroad. Two days in, I love this Ducati, and I can't keep it at legal speeds, lol!!!! Biggest full size adv crowd here in the midwest is definitely BMW GS and GSA, the local guys all tried to convince me BMW. but I have an outstanding Aprilia dealer that is also the local Ducati dealer and I like the sales and service there so I decided to buy a second motorcycle in less than a year with them. I agree with you that if money isn't an issue there probably isn't a better adv touring bike. This is the most powerful bike that I have ever owned, but the rider aids have made it very user friendly and easy for someone transitioning from smaller, less powerful bikes. I've been commuting in the KC metro area and this isn't a hard bike to ride around town!!!
one of your best riding, great bike, gorgeous scenery, cinematography and music added a lot in this episode, would never buy this model because I am not long distance and specially absolutely not highway guy but for sure if I am without any doubts would go with this model! Btw I am getting Desert X next year, decided also on your X review, thank you for excellent riding, cheers V!
A fantastic video i must say and very interesting well done a great review of this bike
Great Video!!
Thanks Ian.Wonderful review/ almost a movie! Thumbs up for your honesty and âstraight up,no chaserâ opinion.
Great Video Ian!! Congratulations!!
Fantastic review/ film Ian great job! Its some machine and you rode it very well, kudos!
IAN! Incredible video man! I loved it! Thank you for putting your time into this for us.
I have to add, if there is ONE thing I learned from this video before I start the CO BDR in September... it's that I'm placing an order for a pinlock for my visor right NOW hahaha. I was thinking about going without it, but not anymore lol.
You rock Dork! Loved the BDR series and thanks for the mod review. Great information
Umm. Wrong video?
Hello đ, best adventure footage ever, wicked bike. And cudos to the videographer for all the drone footage and trail video. Thats living Ian good job.
Crazy riding skills. ThanksâŠ. Again.
Excellent video. Beautiful scenery.
Mine "like" was 1000th, and by all mean you deserve it (100x more;) for your good work and material that you made for us. Wish you all the best, regards from Serbia!
Superb informative video, thank you
This is by far the best Multistrada Rally video Iâve seen. Your review sealed it for me. I was debating the Rally and the new GS1300. Amazing video!
Outstanding video Ian.
Your riding skills and the bike are amazing, this work is a masterpiece. In my opinion if you have friends around you, no need to worry going off road with a heavy bike. Greetings from TĂŒrkiye
What an honor and a privilege for you to be among this group ride. You've earned every mile of it and it validates the effort you've expended in your other reviews. Your channel growth shows how much the manufacturers appreciate your honest approach and the humility it demands to give feedback to how they can improve their offerings. The music: George Winston on piano?
Having ridden all those passes and experiencing the thin air, I was sitting here feeling like I was running out of breath when you were fighting that beast up Cinnamon Pass. Years ago I did Engineer on an 1150 GS and the weight just took so much out of me compared to when I rode it later on a KTM 530 EXC! But that GS sure was sweet on the easier dirt and twisty paved stuff! Great content, keep up the good work!
Incredible video Ian. Editing was top notch!
Thanks a ton!
Great vid, looks like some amazing rides
It was!
What a great review! It's a first and only relevant review for this bike, this is the type of ride it is designed for. I take out a new one in a week time and hope for some nicer weather into the easter holiday. Today it's snowing though
Youâve nailed it here, if you want âthe bestâ, just get this. Yrs of upgrading cams, tunes on HD baggers while having KTM 790 ADV as 2nd, went for all-in-one V4S. On street, no bike I canât hang w/, power at 10/10 Iâd blistering fast for its size, then flip back to touring for casual ride. Purchased V4S Sport as ultimate sports tourer, would highly recommend Rally if you go off-road, otherwise V4S Sport Full has all features needed for street, w/ exception of Rally having larger tank. Seeing 180 mile range on V4S in real world conditions
U Rock! I was on my 1250 GSA today⊠Jeez, I was just up in British Columbia on some mountain roads, nothing like your adventure. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome episode. I liked how you reminded yourself to look in the direction, keep breathing etc. It was training for me, and I really liked it.
Very impressive test ! Congratulations ! This bike is awesome !
Great review and film was fantastic. Thank you for sharing your lunch adventure, truly jealous of the opportunity.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome footage ! Phenom scenery !
Glad you enjoyed it
I am impressed!
Ian
Awesome video Sir!! Great riding on some ugly terrain for a big bike. My Mannequin got scared when you almost got stuck on that steep uphill start. Way to go! đđ Look forward to seeing you again on another ride. Well done with the epic scenery shots. Great job Sir.
I'm still keeping my 2023 Triumph Tiger GT Explorer though...
Ride SAFE and BE safe!
Cheers
Great video! My son and I were out that way last May, beautiful state!
An amazing video Ian, excellent review!!!
Glad you think so!
This looks like an awesome ride.
Wow! High end video.
Epic video.
That looked more like torture than fun though đđđ đđąđđ
Great video. One of your best ever. Definitely a follow up video would be nice on the bike. That look like some terrifying writing on what appeared to be street bias tires. I hope the guys that got hurt werenât too bad off.
Now that was a proper test! Well done.
Glad you liked it!
High altitude on a big bike..Great job Ian. The production quality of this review is amazing!
Much appreciated!
You deliver the goods Ian! Great real-time feedback and in such a beautiful setting. I was seriously impressed by this bikes capabilities and you definitely put in some genuinely challenging seat time going over Cinnamon Pass. It'll be interesting to see how the new 1300 GSA compares with the MS.
I do really enjoy this. This is cinematic!
Sending this wonderful piece of work to anyone that asks me why I want a Multistrada V4 Rally.
Fun video. Love that part of the country. Had my Africa Twin over Cinnamon, Ophir and Engineer a few years ago. Your hard breathing brings back memories. Thereâs no air up theređ. That is a crazy cool bike. Thanks for sharing
I like seeing that traction control light. It tells me the bike is doing its thing.
Thanks for sharing Ian and even though you had said this is more of an adventure film and not a review, I disagree. Taking us on this journey you showed us what this bike is capable of on and off road and sharing your thoughts along the way as well tells all. Thanks again Ian and keep more great content coming.
Glad you enjoyed it
Really enjoyed this Ian, because it was a very real look at a bike I'm seriously considering. I would also want a smaller bike for that sketchy stuff, we could all feel the effort it took. Fantastic job my friend!
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent Long video so good I did not notice the time went by. Awesome, I have a 2017 Multi Tour S and that trip you took would be challenging in the slippery rocks for me but would lo e to do it. I absolutely agree 100% and I have asked Ducati why do I need a heavier bike off road. Give me the 8 gal tank on road where I can utilize the weight and range for a smoother ride. Plastic side bags like I have. The big aluminum cans grab the wind and just not that attractive in MY EYE. Can't wait to try this one. Great video.
I was just riding that highway two weeks ago on my 890 Adventure.
Great work on the video Ian. I'd absolutely love one of these if I magically grew 6 inches taller. I like all the tech, can't wait for radar cruise, hill hike etc to come to more bikes.
Thank you for enjoying my beautiful state. You saw some of the most beautiful part of Colorado. BTW your videographer did some beautiful "B roll" work. High value almost cinematic product by the video guy. He deserves a shout out.
The folks Ducati hired for this were amazing!
GREAT vLOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent review and props to the Ducati videographers for the epic scenery shots. A German-language youtube channel also recently reviewed this bike and took it (with the correct tires) to the Bosnia Rally in which the conditions were arguably even tougher than those you rode in. The bike performed flawlessly and even ended up having to tow a stranded Pan America. The reviewers were all equally impressed and surprised by its off-road capability. Btw, was that Rennie Scaysbrook to the rescue @ 31:15 ? Pretty quick company you kept on that ride!
Yep, Rennie!
Really loved this video. Incredible scenery and such insight into this amazing bike. I was surprised to hear that you donât have seat time in the KTM 1290 SAR. I know itâs no longer the freshest big bore ADV bike around but I love my â22 and I for one would *love* to hear a comparison to the new Multistrada V4 Rally - a bike which Iâm definitely considering when itâs time for me to get a new bike.
I have done Cinnamon pass, Black bear pass, Imogene pass, with a Toyota 4 Runner lifted 3". I handed to you guys; this is not for the faint of heart. it always looks much easier on film, inclinations & Decents do not really show on camera. I'm riding motorcycles for almost 60 years, looking back I'm amazed I made it that far. Congratulations on this great video, I like your footage, that's why I subscribed. Good luck and may the bike Gods keep you safe.
What an honest drive and review, congrats! Thatâs the bike âŠ
Well done, i felt your struggle on some of the offroad stuff. You did really well, i expect you slept well that night!
Very well done sir! Had to be a handful on those tires.
Nice ride, nice bike!
This was a great review on many levels. In some cases, we just get opinions from the podcasters mixed in with the technology..... In this video, I got to see you and the others ride this bike, like I do with my buddies, on our off-road trips in some pretty narly trails. It was important for me to how you managed the terrain and worked through different scenarios (stopping on the incline, rain/sleet, mud, and etc... Thanks, one of your best IMHO
Thanks for that!
Incredibly beautiful and what a great motorcycle. From a Swede đžđȘ
Great video đ I'm picking mine up Friday, I really wanted spokes and in uk when you price up the different spokes on the v4s it was slightly more expensive than the standard rally radar so I kind of felt I was getting a bigger fuel tank free, absolutely lovely editing and content and happy travels, btw come to UK if you want some crazy Island's đ”âđ«
Ian, what a fantastic trip. Camera work outstanding. Braver than me to ride over that pass, more so with road baised tyres. Ducati were very bold to do this route. Brilliant bike, but i will stick to my GSA1250. Ducati ownership cost is high and limited dealer network in South Africa. Chain drive is a hassle and rear cyclinder engine heat would be an issue in our climate.
I was holding onto my phone when u rode near those cliffs. Fantastic scenery.
Great job. We've all had that stuck in mud hole struggle!
You got that right!
Really enjoyed this video, didn't feel like almost an hour.
Beautiful video! Old Sterling better have an eye in his mirrors! Bike looks fantastic, just what Iâll get when I hit the powerball! Although I might wait for the âhovercraft modeâ to float you over the mud!
I was going to carp about overuse of the term "Epic" but after watching the entire video, I'll give you that--it was quite possibly your most impressive video to date. The scenery and terrain were quite impressive and the bike wasn't half-bad either. Speaking of terrain, I was with you all the way--until you started the really crazy off road stuff. I like the twisties (on pavement) but switchbacks on slippery rocks with mud, cliffs and hundred foot drops is not my cup of tea! Of course on someone else's bike, with a dozen other folks riding just ahead and a chase vehicle within radio distance--I'd be willing to give it a shot. As to the bike, I'm with you: a drive shaft would be definite plus (on-road). Nice as the suspension sounded, I'm not ready to give up the anti-dive, telelever front end on my R 1250 GSA--or the boxer engine's torque, or the dual cam performance. I'm a 99.9% on-road guy, so off-road performance/handling on either bike, is of no concern to me (however good it might be). Again, my compliments on the video, the endurance (and courage) you displayed in the "testty" parts, and the great pre-review of a bike we're all interested in.
Awesome scenery Ian, I just did Glacier National Park and Lolo pass on my Desert X.
Was going to ride Bear-tooth highway but temps hit 96 degrees so I tucked tail and headed back to Michigan.
I agree on the weight and height issue even on the DX when you get tired it shows itâs ugly head.
David
Rode Million $ hwy in early July, found it insane there was no barriers along those cliffs with the amount of traffic on that rode... Definitely a must do road...
that's luxurious
We rode most of the area you were in last week with our Jeep club. Nice review.
Hi Ian.. excellent video! I own the new Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer. I chose it over the Multistrada because it has the 21" front and shaft drive.
My question is this: I know the MS is a great machine, but is it worth $8K more than my Tiger?
I passed 3 slow trucks in the bend you were coming into at 11:11 đ million dollar highway is pretty sweet! Loved every minute of it on my gs 1250!
Ok enjoyed the entire video, completely stressed me out, but completely epic. Shopping multistrada, but now I feel completely unworthy after this video. Awesome work.
Since there were a couple Desert X in the convoy, how did they do on/off road compared to the Multistrada?
Great video and a great bike (Multistrada V4's... â€). Just really, really expensive, even the insurance costs.. đ Was pondering a few months ago if i should shell out the money for this one, but i just couldn't rationalize to myself the five times higher yearly insurance costs.. đ€ That said, best touring adv bikes i've had the pleasure to drive so far.
