Hey, Kyle. I’m a mechanical engineer major and I’d love for you to investigate the common movie/tv/video game trope of pinning an enemy with a piercing projectile. Be it a bow and arrow, hand thrown spear, or ballista, how much force would it really take to lift an enemy off their feet and stick them to a wooden, metal, or concrete structure? We’re Spartans routinely decorating their walls with their enemies or would it take an apocalyptic harpoon canon? Love the show. You the man.
I wouldn't be surprised if Spartans did that anyway. They were known for being crazy.
Well no more power than an actual cannon would be needed, as the cannonballs shot from a cannon were completely capable of destroying human bones (which has happened... also some of them survived) so a ballista has the capability (Which would be calculated similar to a draw strength of a re curve bow, except its a crank shaft typically so much easier to garner necessary energy)
Yeah, that one's tricky. Let's assume it's a spear, just because wooden arrows are probably to weak to hold a grown man off the ground without snapping. That means your spear will have to dump quite a lot of energy into your target's body in order to lift him clean off his feet and pin him to the wall. This tends to be problematic for anything that has been sharpened, because the sharper it is, the easier it will just pierce the target and continue on, rather than releasing enough kinetic energy into the poor unfortunate to pin him up. As far as how much energy it takes, your average 9mm hollow point bullet (this is an average and an assumption that you're using a pistol and not some sort of carbine) will release about 500ft-lbs into it's target, and there's plenty of cases where that didn't knock the target down. That means you're probably going to need on the order of a few thousand ft-lbs of force to lift someone clean off their feet, however, you still have to have your spear successfully impale them and pin them to the wall. This means you really have to know what kind of armor he's wearing, how much he weighs, how far he is from the wall, weather and how fast he's moving, and how much surface area the business end of your spear has to work with. So tl;dr yeah no, not really a thing.
I equate your question to an often depicted scene in movies where a person gets probably a backhand slap and they fly 10 feet into a wall, realistically speaking any blow like that should take your head off. Unless it's a demolition Wrecking Ball you're not going to go flying back into a wall like that

Science is a part of every profession. I am in the science field of care for the sick and injured but am pursuing a career in the science of serving and protecting. I do want to add that most if not all heavy duty breaks these days (trains, trucks, etc.) have brakes that require a functioning pressurised air system to OPEN. As in, if you don't have pressure, you have breaks locked tight. This means you can't really "cut the brakes" of a train or truck without it just stopping dead right away.

I feel the need to clarify something in this episode. The "Fail-Safes" talked about are specific ONLY to the New York Subway system. One specific transit system with a specific type of trains. Of course runaway trains happen, you see it in the news all the time. Denzel Washington even made a movie about one. But the woman who works for the specific transit system in all the Spider-man media, because he lives in Queens, New York, was saying it would almost never happen on that particular system simply because of the extraordinary measures taken against such a disaster.

In a comic long ago the properties of Spiderman's webbing were examined and compared to the Fantastic four -- it included the ability to stretch, the strength to hold the Thing if thick enough, resistance to fire, and that it decays completely in an hour. That last is the reason New York isn't full of old webs considering how often Spiderman goes swinging about. But yes, he has often used that elasticity to sling-shot himself to places he couldn't otherwise reach or surprise a bad guy/ deal with a flying foe.
Props for keeping a straight face when telling the physics of a zero-g-sonic-fart. I wasn't able to.

Spidey always shoots his webs at the top of his swing so when web attaches it is at its shortest. Then he swings down, the web stretches as he goes then recoils to throw him back up, he catches some air and when he gets around to the highest point he shoots his webs again so it's at its shortest again. I reckon he exploits the stretchyness rather than it being a problem
People complaining about the web being stretchy need to remember a few things.
1 it's not a loose rope, so even it does have some stretch to it, when Spider-Man is swinging, He's got his forward moment working in his favor and he doesn't keep 1 web line for very long. So it may stretch under his own weight somewhat, but as soon as his pendulum reaches the halfway point, that downward pull is gone and he's already starting to move on to the next web line.
2. when Spider-Man webs up enemies, he doesn't just wrap them with a single strand of web. He tends to wrap them in a disorganized blob of webbing or wraps them in multiple loops of it. Try stretching a rubber band and then try stretching 10 rubber bands at the same time. It's a lot more difficult to do.
In the movie, her head actually hit the ground... that'll do it.

Technically there are still runaway trains, just not really in small passenger trains, more likely with freight, though they would still require several human failures and safeties being bypassed or misused (such as the crazy eights incident that the movie Unstoppable is based on, or the Lac Megantic incident a few years back). But yes, working on a light rail line myself, there are several braking systems that default to brakes applied, with vigilance (deadman) systems. Also they mostly run on electrical power meaning they probably can have the power cut from outside, and can use regenerative electrical braking to add to their stopping power. Also, they are much lighter than a freight train so would be much easier to stop.
On a separate note, definitely squirtle cause water is the universal solvent, no contest. Could use high pressure water to cut things, put out fire, power electrical turbines... what’s bulbasaur going to do? Slowly decrease your carbon footprint?🙄
When you commented about the velocity of spider silk coming out of their spinnerettes, you need to remember that in the majority of Spider-Man comic canon he has had mechanical webshooters. I believe since he manufactured the webshooters and they have been stated to have a very high fps, he is not limited to the biological limits of his wrist organs like Toby McGuire's Spider-Man.
Also what if the half of the life of in the universe Thanos destroyed included all the bacteria in your gut? Like statistically it had to happen. Would that count as more than half?

personally, I've always subscribed to the theory that gwen was already dead before the goblin dropped her. being that the goblin is psychotic, killing gwen earlier and making spider-man think she's still alive, it puts spider-man in a lose - lose scenario, thus screwing with him psychologically. either spider-man thinks he failed to catch gwen and she "died" when she hit the ground, or it causes spider-man to believe he himself "killed" her.
denlara but the comics fon't illustrate that. But she would've died if she fell more than 42 meters. Kyle said if the web got to her at 42 meters, it would barely save her. So 43 meters, or anywhere up to the 84 meters he mentioned in the same video, and she died.

I recently stumbled across your videos and I have been binge watching them all. One of your topics about the flash and the perception of time and reality really intrigued me. I wasn't sure if this was asked before since I have yet to finish all of your episodes, but I am curious about artificially increasing one's perception through technology. After watching your perception video, I was thinking about a few things I saw on TV. One episode of the Black Mirror, someone can place a human conscience into a device and makes them experience long periods of time dilation in a simulation while only seconds have passed in the real world. Another example is the most recent Anime I am watching Sword Art Online (SAO) Season 3 which talked about how the main character is experiencing a much quicker timeline inside a Virtual Reality simulation. My question is how do you artificially increase someone's perception of time? I did some research and most commonly known experiments were conducted around the premise of increased adrenaline to the brain which people experiences a faster perception. Also, I think that increase the neuro activity in the brain could also give you a boost of perception as well. However, for both of these methods are only short term boosts which are not meant for long term uses. Adrenaline would make your heart beat faster and with that too much could cause a cardiac arrest and too much neuro activities which cause a seizure. So what other ways can we personally experience a sustainable increase of perception?

Talking about Spider-man makes me wonder about his web-swinging. Assuming a perfect situation with unlimited tall buildings, how fast could Spidey swing through a city in mph or kph?
We'd have to come up with a reasonable estimate for how far he can shoot a web-line, the average speed of an object of his mass swinging in an arc, and (because he's losing energy with each swing) how much time he needs between swings to climb back to a good swinging height.

Spidermans thread is not coming out of a spiders spinneret, it is being propelled forwards after being shot out of the pressurized canisters in his web shooter, it would be coming out at a much greater speed then a spider can shoot it with its arse, it is also heavier and denser this making it be able to travel even fast . it would of been able to catch her . when you see this on the amazing spider man 2 you can see the wed is booking it towards her . i am pretty sure he would have implemented some kind of function to make him be able to set the speed the web shoots out at . he could lower the speed or increase it depending on the situation at hand . i would say it is how hard he pushes down on the tiny plunger with his fingers when he makes the wed shooting sign with his hand . harder for fast softer press for slower

Great video as always, and a great location for it as well. But while I'm here I'd like to pick some nits with the design of your ship. In the background of some of the shots the are three radar displays visible. This makes a good deal of sense for a vehicle in three dimensional space. With a separate array for each axis, and sufficiently broad lobes on the radar pulse, you could get a decent three-dimensional picture of your surroundings. But the nit I'd like to pick is not with the displays themselves but with how the scan pattern is displayed. Scan lines (although not present on many modern radar systems) indicate the bearing of the array. This suggests the presence of a physically rotating array, as an electronically steered array can transmit in multiple directions simultaneously with proper frequency spacing. So my question for you is, in a zero-g or micro-g environment, would the physical rotating arrays not act as reaction wheels and impart a rotational force on your spacecraft? To maintain an accurate heading you would need counterbalancing reaction wheels or RCS thrusters constantly adjusting your attitude. Given the additional weight and resource drain of those systems, it would seem much more beneficial to use an electronically steered array instead of a rotating one. But at least in the vacuum of space you won't have seagulls doing their business on your arrays. Love the show, keep up the good work!

In one of the live episodes, someone asked about how our vision would be different with four eyes. I think you said "I don't know" and moved on. I didn't think much of it then, but the thought occurred to me the other day, we have eyes on the front of our head allowing for depth perception, but something like a rabbit has eyes on the side, coming closer to a 360 world view. With 4 eyes, we could in theory combine these attributes, and have a 360 view, without sacrificing depth perception from the front of our heads. That might be kind of cool.

i want to say blastoise too, with its steel punching water cannons, but i play guild wars 2, wich has a plant dragon that sprouts tentacles all over the place, be basicly became the jungle, and looking at venusaur, it can sprout alot of vines.
We literally just had a run away train here in western Australia. 92 kms unmanned then it had to be intentionally derailed. Every once in a while, everything fails.
I just say for spiderman in "nowhere" where you can not attach spider web - look for FLYING SPIDERS (the spiders can create something like "parachute" ) ....for the "train / metro / subway " look on this "AWVR...Unstoppable This is what inspired the movie." ......for the spider "silk " look for how many types of silk can one spider make (there are several types ) [ok ,you have consider it ] ....maybe also you can look at "Goats with Spider Genes and Silk in their Milk" [for the "production" of spider silk look for the goats ....] ...

For what it's worth, Spiderman could've save Gwen by slingshotting himself at her and shoot a web at her then pulling him to him. With his added speed, there wouldn't be much recoil on her neck and then with her in his arms, he could've webbed a line nearby and protect her from impact with his body. Just a derp I guess just like uncle Ben.
Base impulse had me saying squirtle as blastose's water jets have applicable uses in construction and warfare, but assuming baulbasaur/venasaur's vines and/or leaves(or other edible substances they might produce) can be safely removed without hurting the animal, then we have an animal that can aid in third world countries with food production, construction, possibly clothing production, and rescuing people using it's attached vine whips.

Going with the spring comparison, I argue that the energy absorbed by the web stretching would have to be released. Spiderman could use the release of energy in these webs to help him sling around NYC like a trampoline of sorts. If this was the case, wouldn't it be more advantageous to have streachy web?

8:00 I can't speak for the New York subway, but DC Metro has had at least one "runaway train" where a sensor malfunction meant that a section of track appeared clear when there was actually a whole other train parked there. The brakes worked fine, they just didn't engage soon enough, not sure if Spiderman could have helped though.

In the comics, we can see Spiderman shooting his silk upward 20+ stories to get an anchor point to swing around. This imply a pretty fast initial speed and rate of production.

Yeah, in this video, the comment was about New Your subway trains specifically. I imagine they'd want even more fail-safes for underground rail, since it would be hard to get to if it did derail and break anything else down there, like gas, water, and electric lines.
@@bawdydog Iron Ore train. They tend to be stupidly long and heavy, this one had 268 wagons and 4 engines, and traveled 90km in just under an hour. If I remember correctly the crew got off to inspect something and it started to roll away...

The "fail safe" is not an infallible system... think about this there are enough things on a plane labelled "fail safe" they should never fall out of the sky??? But more often than not its the in-proper or mis-use of a "fail-safe" system that can result in more accidents? (ie jamming open a dead man switch so you can read a book while driving)
In the case of trains its a separate braking system to the regular brakes used on the train, even with dead man switches its possible for them to both fail resulting in a run-away train. Even then in accidents where the main brakes fail... the activating of emergency brakes usually happens later and can result in serious injuries due to sudden and uncontrolled stopped.
A lot of train "run-aways" in metropolitan rail systems and subways occur when the train overshoots its stopping point at the end of a line or at junctures where its too late to hit the emergency brake to stop before collision resulting in injuries and serious damage.
Runaway trains in freight lines are a lot more common, and sadly either train line stability (errosion/damage) or human error, and result in runaway or derailment.
@@boxhead6177 Don't get me wrong. IF A LOT of things go wrong then yes a train can technically run-away but that's just it: A LOT of things would have to go wrong on the train itself. And as you said, that's not getting into the various exterior fail-safes that would prevent it from going 'rogue' for so long that Spider-man would need to step in. I'm not really disagreeing with you here, I'd just like to see some kind of lip-service to all of these extra things failing as opposed to just "Oh no! Runaway Train!" because that isn't remotely realistic.

Here's the thing about Stacy's death scene.
Spider-Man gets the web on her and grabs what looks like a cross-beam. The line goes taut (experiences tension) when she's about 12" above the ground. The timing is such that she decelerates from terminal velocity to a dead stop almost instantaneously which absolutely would break her neck, back and likely any joints.
Clearly, Spider-Man's lines are not the same as spider-silk. IF they were, Stacy still would have hit the floor at terminal velocity and died anyway. In addition to that, the webs attach to her clothing, not her skin/body, and likely would have been torn off and she STILL would have hit the ground at terminal velocity.
I believe there's actually a comic where green goblin does the same thing with Mary Jane and spider man makes a mental note to dial his webbing back from the gauge he uses on the green goblin so it would stretch under stress. Though for the life of me I can't remember what issue.
Damn, I never realized spidman's biggest weakness is an empty field.

Your confusion about yotawatts made me think:

A ton of power would be 10 Exawatts - 1000 kilograms of mass annihilating every single second.
So, here are my thoughts. Some years ago, there was an fyi in a Spider-Man comic that explained how Spider-Man could do what he did, and one part explained how his web shooters worked. The web fluid is a liquid that is under high pressure as it is stored in small cartridges. The liquid becomes a solid 'instantly' as it comes into contact with the air. But, the thing that seemed to have been missed is what kind of condition was Gwen Stacy in when Spider-Man found her at the top of the bridge. Plus, the Green Goblin had to of used a fair amount of force to send Gwen Stacy off of the bridge, considering that she was at a stationary start, and it is assumed that she was launched a number of feet/meters over the side (at least, according to the way that particular issue showed). After Green Goblin's none too gentle kidnapping, and holding of Gwen Stacy (she was unconcious when Spider-Man got there), and the way she was smacked off of the bridge with the glider, then assuming that Gwen Stacy had died after being caught isn't surprising. It would have been the accumulation of trauma done to her body that would have killed her.
