  • If you have problems with your sewing machine missing stitches, not picking up bobbin thread or breaking needles, then one of the issues may be hook timing. I also explain some of the other causes of those issues.
This video covers hook timing, needle bar height and correct needle selection for your sewing machine. Specifically covers the horizontal rotary hook type used in the 306K, 319K and the 320K Singer sewing machines. This 320K dates from 1960.
Common, basic, sewing machine theory is covered.
Setting your sewing machine's hook timing based on its relationship to the needle only, is not an accurate way to time your sewing machine. I show you the correct way.

Thank you again. Just serviced my 306k and when I went to test the stitching, the needle was hitting the strike-off plate. The hook was a wee bit advanced (like 1mm), but bringing it back would have made the striking more pronounced. Even after loosening the screws, I could only get about 1mm off movement out of the mechanism, and as I tightened the screws up again, they moved back into the divots that were already in the shaft, undoing the adjustment I had just made.
Thankfully hubby had a go and he managed to tweak it so the needle would stop hitting the strike-off plate. The hook is still a tiny bit advanced, but still workable. At least the needle isn’t striking now.
Thank you for making such a clear, close-up video. Immensely helpful.

I am so grateful for this video. My Singer 285K wasn't picking up thread and I tried everything and nothing worked. I found your video and you mentioned the dull needle as possible problem. I changed the needle and it's working like a pro now. I also realised the very tip of the old needle had broken off. I'm an absolute beginner with sewing machine. I only have this for 5 months for my paper crafts. Never worked on sewing machines before in my life . Your video was a life saver. Thank you so very much 😃💜

If you have a 206/306/319/320 with the pair of 12 O'Clock orienting pins in the bobbin case you can just use a 20U shuttle and then standard needles. If you have the one with the single locating pin at the 4 or 5' O'clock position (which I assume might be in the newer-produced machines, then it requires further modification. Check out Joe Kahno's channel on replacing the hook and shuttle w/ a 96-10 and then using 15x1 needles and the standard swing needle bobbin cases. If that is swapped out and the timing is set properly as was discussed in this video you should be good to go. As a side note, many of the aftermarket bobbins don't work particularly well with the bobbin winder and Joe has a very good tip in his video, unless you want to lightly use a dremmel.

Many thanks for a fantastic timing instruction.
I had this issue on my 320.k and i found that those 2 stop screws holding the hook swing are badly worn.
Do you possibly know what these 2 screws have for dimension.?
It is not metric thread that is most common here in Sweden but I think it can be American 3/16 UNF (4.77 mm).
When i know the right dimension i´m thinking of replace them with insex stop screws so i can get them really tight so the swing wont slip thast easy.

Do you think that the needle strikes on the strikeoff plate were due (in part) to the fact that the two screws that held the assembly were loose? It seems to me that in addition to the wrong needle if the assembly was loose needle strikes would not be unexpected.

I'm hoping you can me. My problem is with the hook shaft on my singer 319. I think after watching your timing video. The bobbin assembly is in the wrong position on the shaft. I believe this because when the needle is on the way back up it hits the bobbin assembly and won't complete the cycle. At this point I have to reverse direction. I can't get the bobbin assembly off the shaft. Very very stuck. If it's too far forward now how do I get it back into place? I don't want apply too much force. I am putting penetrating oil and checking each day but it's been a week and no progress. Nothing moving. I hope you can help. Thanks Carole.
