  • Newsbeat investigates the controversy that exists between the residents of Westport, County Mayo and the hippies living on Dorinish Island in Clew Bay.
Hippies, Yippies, Drop-outs or whatever, they’ve rejected your world and mine and here on this cold and windswept chunk of land, they plan to set up their alternative society.
Three men have recently arrived on Dorinish Island to set up their own new world. Leader of the group, Sid Rawle, explains how they plan to set up a tribal community, where people can come to try out an alternative way of living, explaining,
We don’t want any of the paraphernalia or claptrap of 20th century society... but at the same time peaceful, loving communities.
While twenty people lived this alternative way of life throughout the summer months, only three remain and they are determined to demonstrate that this a feasible, alternative way of life. They are spending their time building teepee tents in preparation for an influx of hippies the following summer.
On the mainland in Westport, the presence of the hippies is viewed by many as a threat to the traditional way of life with local resident Ceura Alger describing the hippies as,
"A very bad influence on our youth."
An anti-hippie organisation has been set up in Westport with the support of many local residents and groups, and they want the hippies off the island.
    Mrs Alger also comments that,
"The only thing to have lived on Dorinish for a great many years now are the rats."
The hippie commune ran into trouble in the past when they planned to set up on Saint Patrick’s Island off Skerries in County Dublin. The plan was abandoned as a result of local opposition.
A Newsbeat report broadcast on 7 January 1971. The reporter is Michael Ryan.
The track accompanying this clip is ‘New World in the Morning’ by Roger Whittaker.

The green and red of Mayo. I can see it still. The ocean kisses Ireland and the waves caress the shore. The feeling it came over me. Will stay forever more.

I wanted to join the hippies but they said it was too young 6 years old, and they also did not like my kind of hard-rocking music, looking back on my great life I realised that I was the lucky one, I got to see the most brilliant bands and the cream of the crop Thin Lizzy & Rory Gallagher also of many of the other great bands on the 1970 and 80, If I joined the hippies I would not have got to see those great bands and I would have missed so much. Listing to what those very fine lady complain about those hippies, I and shocked, that people could just a little frightened and may be too posh, I am sure they changed minds laters, I say leave the hippies alone, You will never get a hippy going to war to brutally invade another country and kill total strangers, I hope those hippies won and they are still around and living the good life and not causing and worries or troubles to the very fine people of Co Mayo. My advice to that lady is show a little kindness to those Hippies and you will please God and Mayo will go win the Sam this year

They left the commune after about 2 years due to a fire. The island was owned by John Lennon of the Beatles and he allowed the Diggers as they were known to squat on it. The organiser seen in this video (Sid Rawle) ended up in another commune in Wales and later some other ones.

The fire was a bit of an excuse , I think. After all they could knock up a teepee in ten minutes. A few Atlantic storms saw them off. That and the local reaction

Why are they always English? Although from what I heard, Westport would love to see English hippies than what they're getting now

    • @eyeconphotographyandproduction

English taking over just like in the Isles of Scotland buying up all the cottages for their holiday homes, leaving villages deserted during the winter months! Most likely they came from middle class english families and wanted to be shocking to their parents.
And also not wanting technology, so why are they using a ‘motor’ boat? I’m sure rowing would be more non invasive…

The guy being interviewed is English. We don't know where the others are from as they have not spoken. What's your problem anyhow? Do you want to ethnically select Hippies?
