@@LisaMurphy She's right- at least for some people. If one has high Lp(a), diet and exercise won't help at all, since it's genetically predetermined.
I have it, which has resulted in a high calcium score (Agatston Score), leaving me more vulnerable to having cardiac events. Niacin is the only known treatment and has helped somewhat, but not as much as I'd hoped. It dropped Lp(a) from 140 to 28 at first, then went up to around 55, where it hovers. It should be below 30.
I am trying several different wholistic approaches to try to dissolve the calcium build-up, but am not sure of the results. I need to get another calcium scan.
Taking Vitamin K2 is vital, as it directs calcium away from soft tissue and into the bones. Vitamin C with lysine and proline is another approach. Just do some online searching and you'll find alternative info.

@@goldierule1350 I totally understand your predicament. It’s hard to know what’s best to do and there’s lots of conflicting information from different sides. I posted this in a regular comment but like to share info where I can, so I’m gonna paste it here too. What I’ve learned about cholesterol makes more sense as to what the body is actually doing. Instead of little to no explanation given by most practitioners, other than LDL is too high/bad etc. (as with all too many things in ‘modern’ medicine that treat symptoms rather than causes). Best to you both 💕 Here’s that other comment I made earlier:
I know this will be long, but here are some notes on took (because I’m trying to help my parents) from a heart health summit video, giving more insight into a more informed and complete picture of cholesterol. Take the time to read this and learn a little into what your doctor won’t tell you/doesn’t know. And if you research into the clinical studies on statins, you’ll see the proof of how they do not work to actually improve your health outcomes (like chance of having heart-related event or dying from it). Anyway, here’s the notes. Take from it what you will.
      ..............
Cholesterol -conventional world anything over 200 is high and heart doctors will whip out a prescription for over LDL 200. HOWEVER a cholesterol of 250 has actually been shown to have a Lower rate of all-cause mortality, than a cholesterol Under 200. But you gotta look at the ratio. Example: LDL 150, HDL 80 (and say 20 of other subtypes of cholesterol)...that’s a ratio of LDL/HDL roughly less than 2...that number should always be Under 3, so that’s very healthy.
(But really LDL gets high because more of it is needed to transport lipids to damaged cells)
When cells are becoming damaged from inflammation, they need more of these Repair molecules; more phospholipids, more fat soluble nutrients, therefore LDL goes up. LDL is the CARRIER, taking these things out there. HDL is taking back whatever is left, back to the liver.
When looking at cholesterol, look at RATIOS. Though they call LDL the ‘bad’ cholesterol, they’re actually life-saving, bringing key nutrients out to the cell. Your LDL should be 3 parts or less to every 1 part of HDL. (LDL/HDL). The more damaged your body is, the more LDL Is needed to carry that ‘cargo’ out there. And HDL is bringing back the cargo that’s leftover, whatever’s not needed by the cell, the HDL is brining back. So if your body is really inflamed, you’re gonna use all that HDL and your gonna have lower HDL and higher LDL. Gotta find out what’s Causing the inflammation and damage. Without enough HDL, toxicity is building up and you’re not getting the crap out. This is what’s happening to so many people out there. (Herbs can help, parsley, oregano, basil, sage; all those types of bitrer herbs, cilantro, dandelion, milk thistle, thyme, arugula, mustard greens, they all help bile flow. Bile flow is one way we get ride of toxic cholesterol-because cholesterol, once we’ve used it, goes into the bile, and bile is an emulsifier (helps to emulsify fats so we can digest it properly. it’s also a way we detox. Bitter is good for the liver (like bitter herbs mentioned above). Those herbs help stimulate bile flow, help get rid of that cholesterol that’s been used up which helps get rid of a bunch of toxins and sweep it through our system in our feces. Take in Lots of antioxidants-very protective.

Plus, the Physical Therapist, not the "Most Famous PT", would focus on exercise to assist with restoring strength while healing. I am someone that was seeing in-patient hospitalizations because patients were looking for the silver bullet. A pill that could prevent them from heart attack, stroke and other maladies. I was seeing the statins as the slippery slope to other issues, renal and liver issues. Then patients were taking medications to assist BP because of renal insufficiency. Patients need responsible education and take responsibility for their body. Thanks for this info and encouraging patients to take care of themselves.

Here in Brazil we reduce our LDL by blending apple juice with apple vinegar on the mixer and then drinking it on a daily basis (drink it with a straw, so the vinegar won't destroy your teeth's enamel).
There are scientific studies which empirically found that fruit vinegars do indeed reduce LDL. Pomegranate vinegar, pear vinegar, apple vinegar and balsamic vinegar provided the best results - specially pomegranate vinegar.

@@colprincess8579 Did you research any of the links? That link was to a search with many results. I doubt that not one is reliable. They have citations to credible studies.
I'm glad it works for you, but that doesn't mean it works for the majority of people. There're exceptions to pretty much everything. Your result would be considered anecdotal compared to the actual research studies.
You didn't mention which type of non-flushing niacin you take, nicotinamide (or niacinamide) or inositol hexanicotinate, but from what I've read, neither have been proven to work to reduce cholesterol.
Here's a quote from one article with the link to the study cited:
"Inositol hexanicotinate, a chemical cousin of nicotinic acid, is marketed as beneficially raising HDL cholesterol the same as nicotinic acid but without the skin flushing side effect. But critics argue that studies done to support the cholesterol-regulating properties of inositol hexanicotinate are out of date because they were conducted in the early 1960s. They also argue they were not conclusive.
There has been some debate as to whether or not flush-free niacin lowers cholesterol levels. In fact, there have not been enough studies to support or deny this. One study has indicated that up to 2,400 mg of flush-free niacin each day (in divided doses) is needed to lower cholesterol levels, whereas other studies have indicated that flush-free niacin is ineffective in lowering cholesterol.
One interesting study examining different forms of niacin measured the amounts of free nicotinic acid (the main compound in regular niacin) found in the blood after the no flush product was ingested. The study found that after 1.6 grams of inositol hexaniacinate was taken, only 0.6 micromoles/L of nicotinic acid was detected in the blood.
In comparison, taking one gram of the immediate-release nicotinic acid resulted in 240 micromoles/L detected in the blood, while taking two grams of sustained-release nicotinic acid resulted in an average of 31 micromoles/L detected in the blood, both of which are enough to lower cholesterol.
So, with very little nicotinic acid in the blood seen in this study, as well as the lack of evidence seen in other studies, it is doubtful that flush-free niacin is effective in lowering cholesterol."

      Here's another:
      www.medbroadcast.com/channel/nutrition/supplements-and-nutraceuticals/dont-be-fooled-by-no-flush-niacin
In all the research I did, the vast majority of info indicated that it doesn't work. Not wanting to get into an argument with you. It's clearly working for you, evidently, in contrast to what the prevailing info indicates.
Out of curiosity, do you monitor your Lp(a) level? That's why I take niacin. It's helped lower mine. It's the only known treatment for elevated levels of it, as it's genetic and doesn't respond to diet or exercise.

Any one considering statins needs to hear the alternative view, that cholesterol is necessary as every cell in our body and brain is made of it. LDL is essential for transporting energy in the form of triglycerides and the building blocks for repair. That statin research is flawed and that more heart attacks happen to people with low cholesterol than high. Statins cause 1% side effects? 70% of people who start statins stop them because of intolerable side effects. Statin Research projects exclude people with adverse reactions during the pilot study.
It takes 200 people taking statins for 1 person to benefit. When interpreting research statistics you need to understand the difference between relative and absolute risk. Absolute risk is never used to demonstrate the true effect of statins perhaps because it shows how ineffective they are compared to the damage they trigger. Statins and stents research does not contain evidence of preventing cardiovascular events hear attack or stroke. The lipid hypothesis as a cause of arteriosclerosis is still that a hypothesis, not proven. Surely if statins are the answer and people have been taking them since 1986 why haven’t they cured CVD? The obvious reason is because the lipid hypothesis is incorrect and the treatment worse than the disease. Nutrition all the way!

You don’t. Cholesterol is more about ratios when it comes to actual affects on health. I wrote this as a main comment but will share here as well in case you find something interesting in it:
      .......
