Listening to the 'Born to be wild' cover tune in the background, you really understand what makes the original versions so great - same chords, beat and vocals - but a little something extra pushes those songs into the sphere of legend.
I sometimes wish i grew up in that 60's 70's muscle car era because it was a lot more laid back then from what my Dad tells me.He said when he had his 1969 Plymouth GTX 440 Super Commando people didn't mess with him lol,he also had motor work done to it for drag racing so it was a real fast cat.But those are some bad ass cars you mentioned that were in your family man! & yes they were a dime a dozen back then that's for sure.My first car was a 1984 SVO Mustang,& now have a 1971 Duster 340 4Speed
I love that Big Daddy & Cotton Owens story.I was raised on Mopar muscle cars from my Mom & Dad.My Dad owned a few nice Mopar muscle cars from his hey day,he owned a 1969 Plymouth GTX 440 Super Commando which was forest green color,he had 2 1971 Plymouth Roadrunners with 383 Magnums one was Hemi orange & the other was red.& now he has a super rare 1975 Dodge Dart Hang Ten with a 318,very rare car.My Dad is 68 now & told me some wild stories from back in the 60's & 70's of back street racing lol.
All the pros use Chrysler, Don Garlits, Richard Petty, when it comes to racing you can't beat the Hemi. Even in street cars you might beat em sometimes in 1/4 mile but anything longer, forget it jack! I don't care what your drive.
things seemed a lot more fun. my grandfather complained that uncle's mustang was a POS (it had a big cam, very steep gears & very unstreetable) and tried to race him in his truck. my grandfather ended up getting a speeding ticket. the time my grandfather drove my uncle's stang. he pulled out of the gas station & stood on it. ended up doing a 360 in the middle of town. or when my grandfather took my dad's charger to the store. came back white as a ghost & stammered out that the car was too fast.
Igrew up around this , my dad owed a chy/ply franchise & it would be a regular day at 12 yr.s old to be taking hemi cudas, superbirds, aar cudas , factory fx cars etc. Out on the street and driving em"like I stole em " every day or having sox&marten , don "the snake "prudoume ( great , humble, down to earth guy) or the mongoose himself putting on seminars in our showroom & going out to lunch and hanging out talking racing together ..I prefered sports & more exotic European cars much more imho ... for me istead of getting in a car , i wonted the feeling of putting one on , strapping myself in a 4 o5 or 6 piece harness an piloting something that braked , handled , had traction and responded to my slightest input as aposed to just raw h.p. evena that age ....dont get me wrong , there is nothing wrong with raw tqe.& massive h.p. a couple times we took & chassis dynoed 426 hemi cars of the lot (stock from the factory) and on pump gas they were putting down number pushing 500 Rear wheel horsepwer ....the numbers quoted from the factory were for the insurance companys and and other reasons
TOTALLY! Man, I glad somebody else realizes what the truth is. Ford has NEVER made a Dual Rocker Shaft Hemi. The question i have for John Force is..."What kind of engine did you win all those championships with if your new engine is the "Ford" Boss 500?". The only thing that is different in the Fordsler Hemi is the main bearings are now available as a Ford part number. Allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllrighty then.
I love Mopar! Nothing beats a Mopar & a Hemi engine! That's why all the Top Fuel & Funny Cars use a Hemi, the Ford Hemi makes me laugh, where do you think they got that idea from?
Friggin right on man! I can't even believe Ford get's away with even using the Hemi idea & calling it a Ford Hemi? But Mopar Rules the strip hands down!! & then last year with only 2 Dodge's in the 43 car field in Nascar,Brad Keselowski in the #2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger wins the championship! That's what i call Mopar domination! & in NHRA Allen Johnson in his Mopar sponsored Dodge wins the Pro-Stock championship & "Fast" Jack Beckman wins the funny car championship in a Dodge! MOPAR OR NO CAR!
Yep that's a funny story eh? Cotton Owens leaves the big Mopar Hemi on the dyno & says let's go to lunch Big Daddy if it's still running when we get back it's a good one lol.
i also grew up listening to old street racing stories from my dad and my uncles. my grandfather had a 49 Plymouth Coupe with a swapped in hemi in the late 50s. my uncle had a 70 Boss 302 that he drag raced (on & off the street) in the mid-late 70s. my dad had a 73 Charger SE with a swapped 440 6-pack in the early 80s (1st car I ever rose in) & other musclecars in the 80s when they were a dime a dozen at auctions as beater cars. I passed up a 71 383 Roadrunner ($800) for a 73 AMX ($550) in 2000.
I always loved that story too. put it on the dyno and go to lunch. if its still running when we get back, its a good engine.

Always been a fan of Big. Visit his museum if you haven't already. I miss Super Stock!
