  • Meet Vikas Malkani. Born and brought up in New Delhi, 20 years ago, Vikas moved to Singapore to start his business. As we talked, he pointed out the key differences between Indians and Singaporeans, his thoughts on Lee Kuan Yew and leadership, and what it feels like to be a coach for Sharon Stone. Enjoy!

Another guy trying to get citizenship by talking about how wonderful LKY was. LKY was a dictator who lived during the time of rising manufacturing era in East Asia. All these shipping went through South East Asia. This Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia all benifeted. Singapore benifeted because they loved their ex colonial masters and Indonesia not much benefit because they hated their ex colonial masters. Malaysia was somewhere in between. LKY was a visionary because he loved his ex colonial masters while most leaders who fought and got independence from the British, Dutch, French etc hated them. Such behavior can be called visionary.

I'd like to have such a person around me. I left Germany because I did not see anything improving there, everything bureaucracy is just knocking on the entrepreneurs and trying to keep them as small as possible - but just let them survive. Best would be if the person would get some credit and locked into the country so they will work for the government and deliver constant taxes.
I'm not that kind of person, I want to run my business, build up my business - with my own money without debt (I pay with my time).

One might say, if it's a good idea, people will subscribe to it. Not so. Particularly if that good idea involves sacrifice and things that do not gel (preferences) with the individual. I believe this is partly what they mean when, in speeches, the government representatives say: "Thank you for your trust."

So many "leaders" put their followers/subordinates in uncomfortable or awkward positions for "exposure", "showcasing" or "pushing you out of the comfort zone".

Interesting video and sharing. Regarding citizenship, while we do not know when he applied it and the circumstances, it has been quite clear in the last 10 years that citizenship and PR is much difficult to get especially for certain countries like India. Part of the reason could be due to the need to keep the CIMO ratio and concerns of an already large population of Indian professionals working here.
In order to strengthen one application, the key element that differentiate one from others beside financial and education level, is willingness to integrate. Things like putting their children in local schools, joining grassroots, staying is more communal places rather than expat areas does help in the application. 😊

Leaders are born especially visionary ones .you can go to university or have a PhD and still failed horribly as a leader ,you can to try people as much as you want but if they don't have the X factor they won't go far to become a leader. You know why he can't get citizenship because he is a coach,if he is the a cricket club owner it will be different.some PR after many years only get citizenship when their son is born in Singapore and served NS duties.

Are u implying Modi is a "visonary leader"? He is by far the most populist PM India has had in decades, that has no qualms about stirring Caste and religion, inflaming hatred of domestic Muslims minorities to gather votes among the Hindu majorities, to stirring up the border dispute with China to distract from his domestic shortcomings.
As of 2022, less than 30% of women aged 15-59 in India participate in the labour force. There have been numerous articles about illiteracy and the poor employment quality in India, even among graduates in the nation. Interesting that he failed his citizenship interview, and that no reason was given! Singapore's population is approximately 80% Han Chinese. Singapore only exists as it does, a city state, because the Chinese and ethnic Malays didnt get on well politically, and so Singapore split off from the federation of Malaya/Malaysia. Many people around the world see Singapore as a great ethnic melting pot and as a shining and great example of how different races and cultures can live with each other. But this point of view to some extent misses the point that Singapore only exists as a country so that it can have a Han Chinese majority. I have no doubt that in a thousand years time Singapore will still be a Han Chinese majority state. They will accept far more Han Chinese migrents than non Chinese mingents. They deliberately don't want too many other non Chinese residents or citizens. This is only natural human behaviour. Whether or not this constitutes racism is open to debate and opinion!
