  • @username65585
    @username65585 Před 3 lety +17

    I might be completely off here but it seems to me that a “gift economy” is a barter system that is just stretched out over time rather than just happening at one instant. It it still like shoes for eggs but instead of trading them immediately it is I give you eggs now and then I get shoes in a week for example.

    • @etc_kula
      @etc_kula Před 3 lety +6

      _Debt: The First 5000 Years_ by David Graeber is a fascinating exploration of this. One of the core ideas in that is that what was happening is really debt, and that debt developed before money. Egg person dropping off eggs every so often is building up a societal debt for shoe maker, the expectation that if in the future egg person needs some shoes, well, he knows where to get them. There’s no guarantee in the initial transaction that you’ll get shoes in the future, if shoe maker doesn’t deliver you’re out shoes *and* all the eggs you gifted. Whereas with barter, if shoe maker doesn’t give you shoes, you still have eggs.
      This works in small societies when everyone can remember roughly that so-and-so contributes back what they’ve taken, and shun them if they don’t, but eventually you grow large enough that you need some accounting, some random thing which everyone accepts in various amounts for goods and services. This really took off when some smart ruler wanted to be able to have a fancy army when needed, and found it hard to properly supply them, so started handing out tokens for wheat and shoes and arrows and the like, and oh by the way random subject, every so often one of those brutes you’re feeding or supplying is going to come around and demand some of those tokens back for me or else, and now everyone has a good reason to get some of those tokens somehow.
      The book is really fascinating.

    Barter theory of the origins of money was developed in the 19th century by Menger, founder of Austrian economics. It is false. It was always issued as a state liability, good for the payment of taxes. Talley sticks is one example, but Roman and even Viking coins are examples. Check out Christine Desan.
