Money is arguably one of humanity's most important inventions, but it didn't all come about overnight. So what is the hidden history of the money in your wallet?

This is very good. I want more general history. You are good at making social analogies for massive geopolitical trends.
The Yap islands group is part of Micronesia and has a very peculiar currency: stone. Stone money known as “Rai” are large stone disks, sometimes measuring up to 4 meters, with a hole in the middle that was used for carrying them.
Good luck having that currency in your pile of money.
Not only that but people keep a mental list of the transactions made with each _rai_ - even if it fell in the ocean long ago, people would still lay claim to it
Let me get my piggy bank
I keep seeing background footage of the old city of Jerusalem next to the yafa gate in your videos. And It brings me back to when I was living in Israel. Wonderful video keep on keeping on
Thank you so much for this video. Best analogies ever!

The word 'Salary' is derived from the Roman word 'Sal' for salt as Roman soldiers were given salt as salary
Given salt? In school they told me they were given money for salt.
@@WDCallahan Salt was quite a bit more valuable then and yes, I do believe they got paid in salt.
S Vengat the legionary was paid initially in salt prior to retirement, upon retirement they were payed X denarius depending on how long they served, their actions in battle, their position, etc.
I find it hard to believe that, the roman emperors even made new mints near the border to pay soldiers earlier
Toasti Toastus Augustus my area of expertise is more early empire and mid-late republic so I’m talking about then, can’t say anything about the late republic.
You might want to mention the current fiat system gives complete unchecked power to the people with the "printer" making our current system basically a central planned economy... which is not good and will not end well btw haha
Instead of having fiat currency we could go back to basing our currency on something that's actually useful. I think we should print currency at the same rate as food is produced.
True, after all food is the bases of it all, without food you die, I never understood why we use gold to back the dollar when you can't eat it to sustain life.
Scottish and Northern Irish banks still issue their own bank notes.
Not northern Ireland, they had to stop
Yeah, Scotland's doesn't even have the queen on our notes 💷🏴
_Debt: The First 5000 Years_ by David Graeber is a fascinating exploration of this.
also read the TRM paper :)
I would take the approach from the MMT. Money was invented and acceptet trough taxation.
Maldives has a history of using crazy currencies - coconuts, cowries, etc.
Same in south India.
If it's a rainy day, wouldn't more people stay home and not go out shopping? Would this lead to a decrease in the stock market or the local stock market?
Maybe there could be multiple causations.
Great content! Really glad your channel has grown so much (:
Also, for someone who might be reading this and is not into cryptocurrency, I'd encourage you to research further into it and if possible purchase a responsible amount of it before it's all in the hands of big companies
Can you talk about the isle of man and how it works please.

Wait. It's actually historically accepted that early civilizations tended to based on gift economies?
Pizza John Sticker?
Now all we need is the Brief History of How to Get Money.
I might be completely off here but it seems to me that a “gift economy” is a barter system that is just stretched out over time rather than just happening at one instant. It it still like shoes for eggs but instead of trading them immediately it is I give you eggs now and then I get shoes in a week for example.
_Debt: The First 5000 Years_ by David Graeber is a fascinating exploration of this. One of the core ideas in that is that what was happening is really debt, and that debt developed before money. Egg person dropping off eggs every so often is building up a societal debt for shoe maker, the expectation that if in the future egg person needs some shoes, well, he knows where to get them. There’s no guarantee in the initial transaction that you’ll get shoes in the future, if shoe maker doesn’t deliver you’re out shoes *and* all the eggs you gifted. Whereas with barter, if shoe maker doesn’t give you shoes, you still have eggs.
This works in small societies when everyone can remember roughly that so-and-so contributes back what they’ve taken, and shun them if they don’t, but eventually you grow large enough that you need some accounting, some random thing which everyone accepts in various amounts for goods and services. This really took off when some smart ruler wanted to be able to have a fancy army when needed, and found it hard to properly supply them, so started handing out tokens for wheat and shoes and arrows and the like, and oh by the way random subject, every so often one of those brutes you’re feeding or supplying is going to come around and demand some of those tokens back for me or else, and now everyone has a good reason to get some of those tokens somehow.
The book is really fascinating.
Tnx
I love Money
At 1:28, you defined symbiosis as being mutually beneficial, but that's a specific type of symbiotic relationship called a mutualism. Parasitism and commensalism are also symbiotic relationships.

Then again, you barely think about a bottle of water when at home than when you are dehydrating in a desert. So value is subjective

Barter theory of the origins of money was developed in the 19th century by Menger, founder of Austrian economics. It is false. It was always issued as a state liability, good for the payment of taxes. Talley sticks is one example, but Roman and even Viking coins are examples. Check out Christine Desan.
