    They play Monk's great standard with the vital conviction and casual solemnity of a father giving his infant child a goodnight kiss.

    Those 4th 1st mesures are some of the most gorgeous I've heard in a jazz solo. Thanks J. Gilmore!

    Not sure what people aren't getting about this. Ra was always Ra. Seems like everybody wants Monk to be this sacred Monk thing; Ra didn't do that. Ra was always Ra, and that's why this is is great.

    He's utilising minimum effort for effortless manipulation of ululating vibration
    the little he has to conjure to make those string of space and time wiggle is the unmentionability of a thought.
    He's thinking the music -- you can see it in his face.

    John Gilmore is his name. I heard he actually gave John Coltrane some lessons, which would make sense seeing how similar they sound.

  • @pauldavidclub
    @pauldavidclub Před 12 lety

    Yeah, I really do like Sun Ra, his various bands, his music, and his record covers. But sometimes he went off the deep end, that's all! But, when he was "on", he was on league with Ellington & Mingus (well, almost), and some of his more unusual or rhythmic oriented pieces were on par with the wonderful Moondog. His later funky stuff was George Clinton if he didn't want to sell merchandise. But the far out spacey stuff was like The Dead's "Dark Star" on a bad night (even if Ra maybe did it first)
