  • Part 1 of my PPL lesson on Diversions.
Diversions are an essential part of the PPL syllabus. As a student you have to be able to demonstrate the ability to divert safely before being sent on solo cross country flights.
In this video we look at what to expect from this type of lesson. We also explain the importance of ensuring you set heading from overhead each waypoint. It's a small, but vital detail if you want to navigate well!
This video is not intended for instruction, but for entertainment. This video should highlight key points that student pilots can then begin further study and seek advice from their own instructor and flight school.

Well done, Chris!! There was a lot going on there, in and out of cloud also, but you stayed calm through it all. Are you wearing a watch? If not, you'll find it helps a lot. :-)
As a recent student of diversions, something I've learnt: Don't ever be afraid to slow the aircraft down (80kts) over a waypoint if you need more time to get sorted (like readjusting the DG! - that happened to me only a couple of flights ago, only I wasn't a quick as you were to fix it and wound up a couple of mile off-track). Good call going back to the waypoint and starting again.

Thanks Cameron, yeah I definitely felt the workload during this flight. My watch was broken, so I was having to rely on other sources for timekeeping! It's hard to see from the video footage, but I had sufficient forward visibility at all times and managed to keep clear of the cloud base. Yeah I was having a debate with myself over recalculating or just to orbit back to my last known fix. A challenging yet enjoyable flight 👍

I was looking for exactly that - a video showing a typical diversion lesson. Thank you for putting this together!

Thanks! I'm glad you appreciated this. I tried to get all the key points across and hopefully in a more entertaining way. I intend to do more on Nav/Diversions in the future, so stay tuned for more content!

Ohhhh yes. I remember my instructor warning me about such animals on the runway. He said to be careful of wind-sheer and down-giraffes... at least, I THINK that’s what he said... ;)

Yes! Any instructor worth their salt will warn you never to land on any kind of large mammal! Always Divert!

New to the channel and finding the videos really useful as I renew my licence after a 14 year break. Amazing what comes back quickly and what doesn't - nav and div easy enough but doing the maths en route has become harder!!

Thanks! I'm glad you're finding my videos helpful. There are some really good in-flight/diversion rulers you can buy that allow for quick calculations without distracting from the flying. I'd highly recommend investing in one.

I made this one evening after putting my girls to bed, so it ended up being a little silly with the toys... Perhaps I will revisit this video one day, and create a more "serious" version. You were and I'm sure you still are an awesome instructor!

Ha! I'm glad you could see the funny side to it. I made this video one evening after putting my girls to bed, so naturally their toys got used. Perhaps in the future I will make a purely "serious" Diversions video

I was expecting a good video but as soon as you got the toys out I switched off and looked for something a bit more professional. You made A mockery of us

      @CJThePilot  Před 2 lety +4

Hi John, I appreciate any feedback. The intention was never to be unprofessional. Diversions are a serious subject. The aim of this video is to touch on the absolute basics, so a student has an idea of what one can expect. If I produce that in a way which is too serious it becomes boring, dull and many will switch off. A little fun actually helps break things up and assists with learning, but you already knew that of course.

@@CJThePilot totally agree. This was good. I would recommend maybe a voice over to explain more but enjoyed it as is

Lighten up! This stuff can be a bore to digest and it really helps when there’s a bit of humour

Flying should be fun and learning should be fun. You need to lighten up. Yes, flying is serious and learning to do a diversion is necessary. The toys state that when you get your PPL may be flying with your children on board. It's all about being a safe and good pilot with a little humor. Now that's serious. This is a very good video.
