    It has been many years since I last worked on towboats - and watching this video sure brings back the memories. Although the boat/s that I was on back then were very nice, this one is top-shelf!

    I worked for COASTAL TOWING , HOUSTON ,TX for about 8 yrs as a chief engineer. I had to leave the company because my wife got transferred to Alaska. We pushed HOT OIL . Such as asphalt and 6 oil. Barges were heated and product had to be delivered at the prescribed temperature. Crew was chief mate, engineer, 2 deck hands , 2 tankermen , one relief captain and a captain and last but not least.....the most important member THE COOK.
    Our shift consisted of 6 hours on and 6 hours off twice daily. Front shift was 6 am till noon then 6 pm till midnight. Back watch was opposite. When I first started. We worked 30 days on and 30 days off. You were paid 1/ 2 off your salary on and the other 1/2 when you were off. Engines were 16 cylinder EMD and gensets were Detroit deisal. About 2 yrs into my tenure we switch to 30 days on and 15 off. I seemed to like it better. I'm to old now but I loved the River Life. Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas. Seen em all. Captive Tow. Meaning we kept our 4 jumbo barges. 54 X 300 feet. W Boilers. Hope this explains a little to people. BTW I went on in my career as an INDUSTRIAL HVAC/R TECHNITION. BOILERS,CHILLERS,AND DIGITAL CONTROLS.

      I always remember being on the Tennessee river and the sound of those horns was music to my ears, im only 19 and seriously thinking about getting into this line of work im just trying to figure out what it consists of, not that i feel like its too much work i just don't want to get all set up and end up not liking it, i always hear the talk about how rough it is but it definitely seems like an interesting job.

    • @IslandGirlandHerCaptain
      @IslandGirlandHerCaptain  Před 3 lety +1

      Has changed over the years. Have to work as a laborer so many years to get your sea time. Then go to school to study for your coast guard exams. Then pass your exams. Find someone to train you. Then a designated examiner has to sign off on you being a pilot. After that you send all your paperwork in to recieve your license.
