I used to hunt with my black Lab Suzie! She was trained by my Dad and I. For 13 years she gave her all for ducks and geese. She passed in 2010. I hunted one more season then couldn't get myself to go anymore! I still miss her! Getting back into ducks and God willing I will get another pup that's half as good as she was!!

I have been blessed with 4 Labs. My first one was my duck dog.. she was a grand child of Superchief. She partially trained. I took her away from the the trainer a day when showing Chessy to some interested persons . He beat the shit out of that Chessy. I admittedly took my dog home. She was a great retriever. So much drive and no quite she would dive for birds she was incredible. I had some injuries and stopped duck hunting.Im now 73 and my 4th Lab passed on Oct 5 2021. I still cry almost every night. She was a great companion. I now live in a RV full time. I hope to find a senior Lab I can rescue. My life still wouldn't be fair to a young dog. Maybe I can find an older dog to give the too that's be given to me.

Wow, listening to you talk about your first retriever sounds just like you are talking about my Elsa. Never wanted a lab, then I started duck hunting... She's papered but not a world beater, what "we" know has been taught from reading water dog. She jumps too much, is hard headed and doesn't like to obey my direction commands until she is thoroughly frustrated with herself but she is also fun! She's a great companion that never quits! Duck hunting, mushroom hunting, just walking through the woods or going to the gas station she is there with me. Thanks for this video I think it reminds us all what we really have.

My first lab was Dixie, trained by Chris Akins in Jonesboro. Not only trained by Chris, but we breed her to another great dog he had trained. She was my pride and joy. Hunted till she was 12, then passed at 14. I now have a black lab named Kate, great at marks and hand signals. She does all the work while we sit fat and happy in the blind. She is 8 years old now. If you don't think a dog can be a big part of you family, or your best hunting buddy, you have never had the experience of being around a really good retriever. Hope everyone has a great and safe hunting season. Go Hogs.......

My dog is named Calli! Funny story ... She is a black Lab mix, and had no interest in water since a puppy (even avoided walking in puddles). My buddies bugged me non-stop to bring her out for a duck hunt, so that she could get used to seeing other dogs retrieve. I caved and brought her for a wood duck/black duck hunt ... Shot a big black and she was pulling on her leash (I didn't believe that this "princess" wanted to go retrieve the duck). I let her off her leash and she did a superman dive into the river and retrieved the duck no problem ... needless to say I was wide jawed! She has been my #1 duck dog ever since!!!

He learns just as fast as I can teach and his love for the work is beyond words. He's my first hunting dog, the first I've trained, and the first I've hunted with. This past season he has become steady as a rock , and bilnd retrieves to hand signals with persison. I could not be any happier with how far "we" have come as partners in the field in the past 3 years.
Me grandfather told one time . " you cant have a steady dog , with out a steady hand ".
Its all about being one with your dog and being able to read him or her .

I completely understand the love for the dog. I have a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, toller. I got my first toller, Buddy, in 2009. He has been more then I ever imagined. He is beyond determined and has accomplished more then I could have dreamed. He will be 12 this December but is definitely slowing down with arthritis. We bought another toller the end of July, River. He is Buddys nephew and very sweet but still different... I am enjoying every minute of training, teaching and playing with both these guys. I do love hunting more because of Buddy... Great video... God Bless

My 2 year old black lab is named Lord Calvert. If you were a Ducks Unlimited memeber a few years ago they had a Limited Edition decanter of a black lab filled with Lord Calvert Canadian Whiskey. We call him "Cal". Got him as a rescue at 5 months old from a bad situation and did all his training myself. So proud to have him! I used Dokken's books, Brookstone Kennels videos, and Bill Hillmann videos to get him where he is today. Not a perfect hunt trial dog, not the fastest... but he is loyal, fairly steady, works well with other dogs, and most importantly- stays still and quiet in the blind.

Big Jim is my 7 month chocolate lab. I'm just letting him play right now but he's already showing every sign of becoming a monster. Awesome nose in the field, eager in the water. Rarely has to be shown anything more than once before he just takes over and does it better that I can teach him. If he shows this potential at 7 months I can't wait to see him at 2 years!

I grew up in South Africa and hunted in the Eastern Cape region for most of my childhood, we had an English Bull Terrier called Kaizer that loved going out with us, his particular specialty was sniffing out and leading us onto Warthogs, he lived for it and the strange part was that we never really trained him to do it, we`d be out and he`d get a whiff of a Hog and off he`d go until he led us to where it was and the best shot we could take, he was instrumental in at least 15 successful hunts and always got a few really good dinners from the hog after the hunt...man, I miss that good boi every day!

A few years ago we had to put down our dog, her last hunt she was hurting, but was able to retrieve all if the downed birds. We put her down two days later. My finest Lab was named Ranger. He was a gift from my Army buddy's family after he passed. I received his father Major and him from them and was very honored. As far as experiences, hunting with him was almost a religious experience. He made it to 15 and hunted hard until 12. Amazing how he healed my heart and my friends family throughout those years. They are one of the finest gifts from god.

My guy is a black lab named Rocket. I’ve been involved with 6 labs over the course of my life including my dad’s dogs when I was a kid. Dad was a Wolter’s “Water Dog” fan and I think it’s still very relevant today. I trained Rocket myself using Wolter’s and Julie Knudson’s pointing lab books. He is the most driven retriever I’ve ever seen. The drive comes from his bloodline (KB Kennels in Pierce, CO), not my training! He is also the sweetest and funniest family dog. Great content!

I just found your channel Joel, and I have to say I love it. I find myself binge watching your videos. I grew up waterfowl hunting in Alaska and had a Chesapeake Bay retriever named Ricky. He was an amazing and intelligent dog. I went several years without hunting waterfowl and was just recently greenlighted by my wife to get another Chesapeake which I’ve never thought would ever happen again. So, I’m getting back into it in a big way and now I have the opportunity to share my love of hunting waterfowl with my son. Okay, quit peeling the onions. I've never hunted (I don't want to shoot a bird), but I had two sister cocker spaniels that, without formal training, would range a field perfectly. Prissy was a perfect soft mouth. One day she found a baby bird in our suburban front yard. She picked it up and brought it to my man, refusing to let the other dogs near it. When she reached him she gently put the bird in his lap. The bird's feathers weren't even ruffled. I wonder what she would have done if she'd been trained. Probably trained the trainer. Your dogs are great, doing what they were bred to do, and obviously loved. No dog could ask for more.

Ive never had bird dogs. I had one dog really in my life. His name was Moche, named after a character from a video game/anime, Monster Rancher. I got him the year we almost got hit by a hurricane (I think it was Hurricane George). He was a mutt, cocker spaniel and Alaso-aso mix. And he was the best dog a man could ask for. Growing with a budding mental illness and seeing my folks divorce at a young age, he was there for me thru everything. He made it to the age of 17. And to this day I miss him.
Ive also had 5 different cats in my life, two of which, Menew and Pixy, have passed away. Those animals have kept me alive and kept me sane. And my life would not be nearly as rich if I hadn't had them.

Awesome dogs. I'm too busy to get one. Waiting for my kids to grow a bit older, then maybe they can help me with a dog. Hopefully by that time I would be able to convince the wife too, lol.

My dog's name is Sadie. She's a 4 year old chocolate lab that I adopted from a friend at 2. She didn't have any previous training, so I had the difficult task of starting her as an adult. With her also being my first dog to train, I'm very curious how she's gonna do. This will be her first year hunting with me, so I'll be tickled pink if she just brings back the ducks that fall right in front of us. That's one less duck that I have to go out and get :)

Awesome video! I know what you’re talking about. You can see my girl Beckett in my profile pic. She is a 3.5 year old field bred springer spaniel that I trained myself. We are going into her 4th season and she is why I hunt. I will gladly call and work with her and let my buddies shoot just to spend time with my dog!! You know what I’m talking about!

I had a chocolate named Merlin. He was a lot like Belle. I don't know that I would have a dog pro trained because of all I learned from training my own dog, but I "know what you're talking about" with having a self trained dog that you live with their quirks.

I hunt with 2 black labs Sugar and Spicy. I’ve had Sugar at my side since 2008 and Spicy was brought in to the mix last year. No one that’s never hunted with a dog knows what it’s like to hunt with a dog. I know the day is coming when the old dog won’t be there anymore and it’s a day I’m not looking forward to. To best quote the situation would be the one from Robert E. Lee when he was informed of Stonewall Jackson’s death “Gen. Jackson lost his right arm and now I’ve lost my right arm in losing him.”
