Sorry to hear about this Joey! I completely feel for you on this and relate to it a lot. I often need to leave town and have had my share of pet disasters hit while away. Hang in there! Keep up with the great videos!
AntsCanada we're all gonna miss the black dragons :'(
Yea);
Ac family for life
Oh did not expect to see you here
Round of applause to your wife for stepping in and helping... She knows how much this hobbie means to you and all of us... Great job and thank you for sharing with us the good and the bad... Thumbs up brother
Appreciate you keeping it real and showing the good with the bad, I feel for you.
Bro I’m so sorry for all the loss. Fish die. We are only human, and we make mistakes. Those fish were lucky enough to have a good home while they lived. Take solace in that.
You're wife is a rockstar! She saved what could have been a total loss. Well done Tonya!
This stuff even happens to the masters of the hobby. Sorry for your loss and thanks again for sharing x
Your wife is an MVP.
Kamodomon a*
Having the integrity to post your mistakes as well as your successes is something I greatly respect. You're a good guy. I saw you at RAP NY, we spoke briefly between the hotel and your talk. I've been keeping saltwater for years, and not really into freshwater. So I watch your videos for the stories, rather than information. Keep up the good work dude.
No fishkeeper is a stranger to freak occurrences like this. I'm sorry for your losses Joey. :( Good on Tanya and your friends for coming to the rescue in your absence or it could have been so much worse.
Also this is why I'm afraid to leave my house anymore!
Can we get a round of applause for the DI-Wyfe who came in clutch to help repair the gallery? Joey is a lucky mans
You need to set up a system that detects lowering water levels and shuts off the pump to avoid these problems also make you electrics waterproof
Your openness with your viewers and all the details you share, regardless how "pretty" they are, is amazing. You're so real with us and that's such a rare find. Thanks Joey!
Aw Joey. I am so sorry for your losses. :( your wife is amazing for jumping in to save as much as possible, and kudos to your friends for coming to help as well.
Also, can we appreciate what a boss Joey’s wife is. SHE HAS NO INTEREST IN THE HOBBY. Yet she did the best thing she could possibly do given the circumstances. Joey you are very lucky to have such a dedicated partner in life.
I don't think so? They married last year (This year?) and had been together for ten+ years if memory serves.
Too many fishkeepers only ever talk about the success, never the fails, because of this new fish hobbyists get discouraged when something bad happens and think they are bad hobbiests, ending up leaving the fish hobbie. And its damaging to the new generation of fish keepers. Great Video Joey and glad it worked out not too bad for you. Have a great day mate.
You need to hire someone who can do everything you can do when you go away. All the best to you, man.
aww man. That sucks so hard. Big fish, big fights :( The inscriptus was my favorite. I am so sorry for your loss.
Appreciate your effort and honesty..you were able to tell the fishing community about your success as well as your failures..thats a great deal.. believe me everybody doesnot have that courage.
I find it very bold and mature to make videos about fish keeping mishaps.... prideful people wouldn't do this, just shows how you own up to your mistakes. Respect!!!
Can we just take a moment to thank your wife for being such a good sport. I would of had a panic attack if I were her. Also sorry about the fish. Im upset the eel is gone I really liked him.
You need a floor water alarm for leak detection. They sit on the ground with two probes. When the circuit gets completed they go off like a fire alarm. I think they even make "smart" ones
Better take your wife out to a fancy diner for saving the day.
So sorry to hear about your eel and arowana! Thankfully, no one else was lost! I'mma miss the eel most, I think. He had spunk.
I really appreciate how you let us learn from your experiences even when negative. Really inspirational and educational
Sorry to hear your loss. Thank you for being transparent as always. It's hard to see hobbyist never show their ups and downs and thinking they're always perfect with no problems. You bounce back as always.
I'm sorry for your loss! Thank you for being transparent, honest and not sugar coating anything!
Tell your wife how much she means to you, show her that if she wasn’t in your life you wouldn’t be where you are today. Your wife is amazing and I applaud her for helping even when she isn’t interested in the hobby nor knows what to do.
Sorry for your loss, Joey. I had a 90 gallon tank blow a seal while I was away at college and had nothing I could do about it. Not as big as your leak, but I still know a similar feeling. Ignore the ignorant comments and the hate. I’ve been watching for years and understand this hobby unfortunately has times where bad things happen. Love the content and keep up the good work. I’m sure same mistakes won’t be repeated.
Hi, Joey.
Here's what I think you should do. First: take your family out for a nice evening - dine out with candles on the table and strawl some time in the shopping area of Truro (is that the correct spelling?) - your wife was your 'first responder' - make her feel your gratitude.
Second: get the mess in the fish room cleaned and dried and eventually get some company to the lion.
I've been married too, and sometimes wives deserve our gratitude.....
Oh most definitely.
Thx for your thumbs up :-)
Thx, Joey and all the thumbs up.
Peace of mind and harmony in the home-front is the foundation on which you build the rest.
Keep it up.
So sorry about that!! Seems to always happen at the worst time! Your wife deserves something big after this!! What an amazing supportive woman she is!
Love that you talk about these things so honestly Joey. I've had a few disasters myself, almost to the point of packing it all in. Seeing we all struggle at times in this hobby despite our experience makes it easier to pick up the pieces, continue learning and coming back better than before..
Atleast only a few fish died. The water could’ve caused a short circuit and killed all the fish in the gallery.
Everything is on GFCI.
She should make a CZcams channel called the wife of DIY. Mrs. Mullen you da real MVP
Bruno Venturin
Agreed
I am sorry to hear about your losses. I will have to say you have an amazing support group (wife and friends). This disaster could have been much much worse. Thank you for sharing! I will be curious to see some of the things you will put into place to ensure this won't happen again.
It's tough for any pet owner to go through. Thank you for sharing the dark side of the hobby. We love you
Your wife is definitely a keeper. Us fans needs to appreciate her more!!❤❤
Shocked...that eel was awesome...
Joey- I'm so sorry about the arowana and eel. What a devastating blow. They had such good lives with you.
The way you talk to us is so good. Your narratives are better than movies ones
884k subs!?!!? Wow man I remember watching your first videos on building an acrylic aquarium.
GREAT WORK MAN!!
Joey I am so sorry for your disaster. I had a 55 gallon almost completely empty due to a UV sterilizer bulb housing not being screwed back in while waiting for a replacement bulb. That took hours to clean up. I can't imagine cleaning up 1000 gallons. I am so sorry for your loss but thanks for sharing your experience. Hopefully we can all learn something. Love what you do and love your channel! Keep them coming!
I think its very crazy how things work. That your wife wasn't able to make the talk but able to save your gallery. One of those crazy right place at the right times even though it doesnt feel like it.
I work in an aquatic store. I kid you not, when i put my hand in the snowflake eels tank, he would move into a gap the size of a fingernail, and wriggle under the covered light strip, and move to the neighbouring tank. I tried my best to keep him in that tank, but every morning he would be in a new tank, harassing the other fish, possibly moving three tanks along!
This is truly the stuff that makes you want to quit. I only have 3 tanks and the largest being a 180. It gets tough sometimes especially with a full time job. I cbf anymore but I also dont want to lose my fish friends. I really get attached to my pets and I would hate to think they went to a person that didn't know how to look after them.
love u bro. bad things happen. kings fix kingdoms. r.i.p. reel legends never die!
Catch Em All Fishing WHATS UP VRO
Zach whats up
Shout out to your wife for doing what she did!!!! Really brave of her!!!!!
Mannnn sounds like a scene from Jurassic Park!
Glad your Mrs was able to jump in and get it sorted for you. Well done Mrs Mullen
Hi Joey, I'm doing a research assignment about CZcams success for a summer course. I was wondering if you would be willing to be a primary source and do a short email interview?
Hard pipe from now on?
Reminds me of when I lost my colony of rare plecos because of a rookie mistake with a canister filter. After being completely devastated I picked my self back up and switch the Pleco tanks to corner matten filters. Mistakes are only awful if you don’t learn from them!
Aww. The eel was so fun to watch. Those Arawana must of gone through so much stress. I feel so terrible but I'm glad it didn't get much worse.
Man some days when you think it could never go worse, it does. And it catches you of guard. We all went through those type of day.
I'm so sorry to hear about this Joey, I'm glad everyone else is okay.
Oh no! Not the snowflake eel...
R.I.P little buddy you had a heart.
I'm glad everything is okay minus the fish! This could have been a lot worse with fires, and/or flood damage, but anyway...... this really goes to show you that no matter how professional you are, no matter how responsible you are, even having all of the top-of-the-line equipment that you own, and even having back up to backups like your complete generator system........THEESE THINGS CAN AND...............WILL!!!! HAPPEN!!!! Glad you and your family's home and gallery are safe. Best of luck and keep up the good work
Joey, wrap the grate of your floor drain with steel mesh.... like window screen. No more mice.
I also have a predator tank with an eel. i did not have a lid, and i saw this video yesterday it got me worried. Well! I woke up today and my eel was also on the floor! however when i picked it up it wriggled! and i placed it back in my tank and it swam back into its cave. i got so lucky! sorry it wasnt the same for you ;(
Gao Boss I’m happy your eel was okay!
Your wife totally deserves a day at the spa
I loved the Snowflake Eel. Sorry you last him. I hope you get another, such a cool fish. 🙁
Sorry for the loss. Awesome presentation on Saturday.
Snowflake eels do like to jump, I used egg crate/lighting diffuser to cover the tank he hasn't been able to jump out.
He is close to 2 ft a good size. Lately I have down sized my tank and he is the only big fish I kept. If you would like
you are more than welcome to have my snowflake since I know he would go to a great home.
With all the fish you have you need to have an additional fish keeper as a helper
You run a real life Jurassic world. 1 thing goes wrong and all hell breaks loose lol
New snowflake belt. Been there done that. At least she found it fast. I didn't find mine for at least a week. Looked like a piece of jerky. Sorry for your loss.
I yelled when i saw the thumbnail. So sorry for your loss joey!
I know this is 1yr old but I'm so sorry for your loss. When I first had my 20 gallon aquarium, I started with Tiger Oscars, Orandas, and Shubunkins.... I also added some Red tail sharks. And some Philippine Angelfish. My Oscars just keeps jumping out and I couldn't figure out if it's because I have too much water or they don't like the community I've put them in. Or maybe I just needed a better cover. I was about 19yrs old when I upgraded to a 20 gallon aquarium and I didn't know much. We didn't have a lot of CZcamsrs do give me some points and I relied so much on the pet stores I buy these fish off and although they've been taking care of fish longer than I did, they also make mistakes here and there, either because of slight negligence or they just didn't know. It's always a constant learning with everything and for everyone.
I appreciate your honesty!
How devastating. I'm so sorry. The way you handled it and looked at the situation is very admirable.
Not a frequent viewer of this channel, but seeing you positive and hopeful about this experience and the rest of the fishes, and not backing down after such a big loss is such an inspiration. Any fish would have experienced a luxurious life with you, and wouldn't have had any regrets in their life. Stay strong
an expert is someone who made all of the possible mistakes and this might sound harsh but you are on your way to become a expert fishkeeper
I'm sorry man! I really like that you show us everything. Honesty is the most important thing of all.
Try to keep your chin up. Good luck dude.
Your wife is a saint. A perfect match for you! I'm sorry for your loss Joey :(
Murphy's Law and fish-keeping... Sorry for the loss, man, but you know you HAVE to do something special for your wife. She really came through for you! Your bad luck in fish-keeping showed you the good luck you keep by your side!
I think it is now important for you to have a fish sitter that is trained to know what to do ASAP when you need to go somewhere
This.
16+ years... a pipe broke.
The king of DIY I'm so sorry for your loss Joey, but I think having an emergency trained "assistant" of sorts would be a good idea.
which means letting them into ur house while u r not home
The blockage of the drain by the mice actually probably saved you from a worse fate. Imagine that water being pumped outside and not tripping the breaker, not signalling to you something was wrong.
Jenny Livingston true
Sorry to hear about the loss of your arowana and snow flake eel. Thank you for always posting events like this and keeping your channel 100% realistic.
The snowflake eel was my absolute favorite...I could cry😢
Joey , put a mesh cover in the floor drain .. the mice wont get in but the water will go down
Now spend another grand on the wife! She deserves it!!
We will miss the danger noodle
Sorry for your loss. Thank you for being so honest about your disasters; that can't be easy. I don't have words to express how much it helps, how much I needed to hear that even someone as knowledgeable, compassionate, and conscientious as you are can experience such things. Sometimes things go wrong. You can't plan for every contingency. All you can do is do your best and accept and learn from your mistakes.
Shady Maru Agh I hope you get more likes!!
Thank you for sharing your mistakes and being so honest, it takes a lot to do...especially as a bigger public figure. You are helping many other people by providing advice and sharing your experience so this doesnt happen to anyone else. The pipe bursting was such a freak accident...keep doing what you're doing!!
Thanks for sharing this, and being so open about it. Heartbreaking - I loved that little snowflake eel. And I'm not even a saltwater/snaky kind of person. And of all the arowana, I was really looking forward to seeing that inscriptus develop. :-( Man. You can never be too careful, and especially when there's so much going on it's important to not skim over any details. But stuff still happens. Throw an accident on top of it all, and sometimes it trips a huge stack of dominoes.
Add a float in the event the waterlevel drops the float cuts power to the pump and notifies you that there is an issue
Sounds like you need an assistant my dude
Sorry Joey, they're in that billion gallon tank in the sky now.
Speaking of fish jumping out of a tank... One time I was sitting on my couch eating dinner (the couch is beside my aquarium) and all of a sudden splat... a damn glassfish I rescued jumped out of the tank and directly onto my plate... there's only about 2 inches of uncovered tank in the backside, it must have jumped onto the top of the lid and flopped its way across then through the air onto my plate craziest thing I've ever had happen to me in this hobby. He was fine though, rinsed him off in some tank water and put him back in, he's still there to this day.
Happens to the best of us. Had a salt water with 10 grand worth of fish and corals thought I had everything under control. Left out of town for 3 day weekend . Storm came through. Power out for 72 hrs.. The week before I was doing maintenance on my generator and forgot to hook it back up.. lost everything. Luckily you wife was home. It could have been so much worse
So, you lost the Arrowana AND the jumping eel...??
Huge losses...😡😱😨😔
Major props to your wife!
you handled crisis like a champ bro. I had a flood in the house, not aquarium related and that alone is stressful enough. you have a great support system (ie wife, friends etc).
Omg I’m so so so sorry that happened!!! I’m so sorry!!!
can you put water sensors on the floor so it will turn the pumps off it detects water?
So sorry dude, Big props to your wife what a hero! I had the same problem with that type of corrugated pond hose, I suggest you use solid pvc pipes right through the system thats what i did.
Luckily your wife saved the day. U should teach her more about this stuff these things happen with fish keeping specially its nice to have someone taking care fishes when you are out of town or country
NOT THE EEL 😱😢😭
Rip.. you were a very slithery and slimy fellow..
Wow... thanks for sharing the highs and lows. Glad all things considered you only lost two animals. ....... Is it too soon to ask if that means you'll get a puffer fish now.... ?
yea he needs to get is own cheese or cheeses XD
So sorry! Your wife and friends are amazing!!!!!!!!!
Your wife is a champ for saving your hobby when it isn't even her interest. You married the right person.
Your wife should get to have a vacation after that stress joey. She deserves it. :)
Thanks for sharing this, it must have been hard for you to do. Kudos.
Recommendation from a plumber and a fish geek: Get rid of that black hose with the built-in failure points and switch over to schedule 40 or even schedule 80 PVC pipe. Glue the joints properly and it never leaks and never breaks under normal use. Just give the joints 24 hours to cure before using the pipe if you're concerned about the glue being toxic to the fish.
My African clawed frog jumped out of my aquarium last week. By the time I found him he was dead. He got out of the tiniest hole in the lid. I'm very sad about it, had him for 7 months. But we both do our best!
I literally just started watching your videos and now I’m addicted to watching them.
