  • I put this together back in the 90's. I got the idea while cleaning out the ice machine at work, and seeing all that ice just melt away. There had to be something to make use of the abundant ice supply. Check out the video links below to see what I cobbled together, to make use of that waste ice.
While renovating my workshop in 2011, this was just sitting, in the way, so I went ahead, and installed it in my workshop, and added heat. That portion is still used regularly, during winter.
No longer having a of free ice, it is absolutely not practical to use this, as it goes through 10 pounds of ice, per hour. 10 pound bags of ice are $3.00 a bag now, so this 12 hour run cost $36, plus driving to, and from the ice house. I have a lot of spare change accumulated, so when it's time to do the annual run, that's what's used to fund it. It's really a ton of work to keep it going, so the homemade rig is rarely used, in cooling mode.
As far as cooling the workshop, it does ok for being undersized. Definitely cooler, and much less humid in the shop, compared to outside. As long as there is plenty of ice to absorb heat, it will output around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
