  • Tess The Truck’s short bed conversion part 1 of 2. We’re going over a step-by-step process of converting our soon to be Tesla motor powered Ford F100. This part goes over the front 16” removed from the front half of the bed as well as shortening the frame to fit.

      I prefer long beds because I pull a boat n it's more stable...also use it for a work truck...and hauling my Harley's ...ones a long bike...but I like short beds for a show truck, but done right a long beds sweet

    Not a fan of short bed conversions, but I give you credit for the way you shortened the bed. I did auto body for over 20 years and this is one of the best versions I have seen so far. Great job. 👍

    Suggestion If you want to save all the extra work of matching and welding that floor seam what I do is drill out the crossmember spotwelds and slide the floor right to front and redrill the two bed bolt holes and weld crossmember back up with new spot welds. You have to drill out and remove the extra couple crossmembers anyway.

    I like how you wasnt all about 100% precision, these trucks had all kinds of inconsistencies in gap, lengths, squareness and all back then. If you cant see something wrong by eye it was good for trucks, looks good man cant wait to see the EV progression.

    • @PerformanceProductions
      @PerformanceProductions  Před 3 lety +2

      Exactly, these trucks have inconsistencies even within the same model year. Depending on who was working in the factory that day and what parts they had available. Plus, in the end, it’s just metal and you can fix it.

    A short bed on average will be more valuable than a long bed. I'llgive you that. However, once you cut/hack them from long to short the value then becomes subjective and depends on the reputation of the builder or the desperation of the uninformed buyer. Given the expense of having to pay someone to do this work and then sell it after. It is unlikely the cost of the work would be recovered with the "increased value" of a shot bed over a long bed. Even if it is then kept in a bed "batch work" patina form. Short beds look sportier, that's the main attraction. There are too many hack job cv swap short, c-notch, short bed conversions out there asking unrealistic prices. Power to them, I'll keep my long bed.

    • @hothmob
      @hothmob Před 3 lety +2

      Yep. In vintage vehicles (anything vintage) original is way more valuable. Even despite the quality of the work, any potential money thrown at a restored vehicle will immediately notice the VIN is for a long bed. Secondarily, anyone over 50 should realize car fads are just that. Trendy chops look good only in a short window, to a narrow audience. Most of us in the restoration world deal with "mods" from 20+ years ago as a frustrating money & time killer. This will only make long beds more valuable, simple economics of one less original bed out there.

    Question??? I have always heard it was better to "Z" a frame when you cut one down and weld it back together. Curious on what you all thought.

    • @PerformanceProductions
      @PerformanceProductions  Před 3 lety +9

      A lot of people do the Z cut on the frame. It takes longer that way because you have to be more precise when cutting the Z front and back so they line up properly. We were confident that good welds sandwiched between fish plates and boxed in would be just as strong and be less of a headache.

    • @GorillaCookies
      @GorillaCookies Před 10 měsíci

      A " \ " cut with fish plates and boxing would have been as quick and better. If it was a 4x4 I would definitely " Z " cut with fish plates and boxing .

    I’m thinking of shortening the frame on a ‘75 F250 Camper special, it’s two tone with the wider mirrors, HD springs… both rear corners top to bottom have dents like from hitting a trailer while turning… so i’d have to replace/transplant both corners from a spare bed (short) so it would be plug&play after shortening the frame. Share your thoughts guys. I’m doubting. I would sell it anyway.

  • @robertswain8665
    @robertswain8665 Před rokem +1

    Others are on the other side of the fence… Short beds are inadequate because you can’t do anything with them.. A truck is a truck & meant for haulin’ and most everything fits inside your long bed, your dirt bike/ motorcycle, your camper, your moving cargo not to mention lumber. a long bed and looks better because of the longer wheelbase.

      Agreed! All of these guys cutting-up perfectly good 8' beds, regardless of the quality of the work, makes my '68 F250 long bed not only less "trendy", but also rarer, and thus possibly more valuable. Plus, not only do I not have to worry about running across another one like it, by default a longer wheelbase offers a better ride. So go ahead, guys! Shorten 'em up all you want!

      That's a lot of skill time and labor there I would expect if I brought my 69 in there it would be in the 3-5 k range I would just buy a parted out short bed cut the 16" out and put the original short box on it .
      Although the skills here are great they did a top notch job he said it brought the value up 1-2 thousand but it would cost me 3 times to do it ? Ford's trucks are not high up on the value list I see them all the time running for 5-7 thousand .
      This was a demonstration of the skill of this shop if it was anything over 3 thousand to do this I would prefer buying another truck .
