Ahh DreamWorks. They seem to have a little bit of everything. Some massive hits, some great films, and some massive losses, and TERRIBLE stuff too. And today we're discussing the movie with a title that you'd expect would be an easy viral hit, but it wasn't. Monsters Vs Aliens! So why wasn't it that loud and proud? What was it missing? And why is it cropping back up only now in memes? Whatever the case, I never saw this movie back in 2009, so here's our first impression of the movie. Perhaps it was ahead of it's time with a stellar cast and clairvoyant jokes. Or maybe.. it just flubbed the entire premised and put all their eggs in the wrong basket...

…Yeah. There's a lot of underwhelming choices in this movie. I would really call a giant a monster. Or a cockroach scientist. And a singular alien? A hilarious President character given two scenes? Nah. Someone along that way needed to steer this movie into a better direction. Capitalise on funnier elements. But they never did. And we're all left positively whelmed because of it. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Personally, i really liked this movie back when i was younger and i still consider it a classic up to this day. But god, i can definetely see why people hate it so much. I'm surprised Dreamworks actually released a series and two specials based on this thing.

14:18 Actually, they are all classic monsters. Link is Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bob is the Blob, Dr. Cockroach is the Fly, Ginormica is Attack of the 50ft Woman, and Insectosaurus is Godzilla. Would it be nice to see other types in the movie? Sure. But the ones they chose aren’t bad picks and are classics of the genre

They even made an entire episode in the Nick show just to make fun of him.
Tbh this is one of the few movies I watched as a kid that still makes me laugh, a lot of the jokes still hold up today.
I prefer Monsters vs Aliens over a lot of movies.
I think this time you missed the mark on what this film is parodying. It's not about the so-called "classic" monsters, but instead about that cult monster era with films like The Creature from the Black Lagoon and 50ft Tall Woman. That's where the source lies and where all the jokes pull from. While comedy is subjective, I feel like you didn't get where the writers were coming from and assuming incorrectly what this film was supposed to be.
This film isn't a masterpiece, but objectively it's pretty decent. There are jokes that don't land, but most do. This is, I feel, one of the most-quoted forgotten films. It's very iconic and there are a lot of great one-liners and jokes that everyone remembers, even if they don't know what film it's from.
I think in this case Dazz just isn't the target audience for this film, and that coupled with some incorrect assumptions going in seems to have tainted his viewing experience.
Here, I've never seen the movie. Name a quote I should know.
@@kaleenar963 I'll do you one better: the entirety of the president meeting the alien robot. That whole scene, from the staircase to the piano to the handshake. It's iconic.
He's been missing the mark on a lot of movies because he needs things spelled out for him or needs a neon label pointing out whatever is being explained
@@sita1993m In general I feel that he's become caught in the same trap of overexaggerating the negatives and downplaying the positives. This is why if I'm doing a review of a film I will watch it twice: Once to get a subjective view of the film, and the second time to objectively analyze the film. The two are mutually-exclusive
@@elijahingram6477 Well I never saw it before I watched this video, so maybe not that iconic?
Even having not watched this movie beyond videos like yours, I can tell where all these jokes are coming from. It's not a bad parody for children strictly on the character designs, things like the president communication, etc. They're being based on 1950s-1960s Americana monster films, that's why you have things like a scientist, and not witches and zombies and such.
But Godzilla is a Japanese monster, not an Americana one

Yeah… idk about this take 😬
Me personally, I very much enjoyed this film! I loved the growth In friendship between the monsters and Susan!
I also loved Susan’s personal growth too! She didn’t want to be second over a job. She’s aware of her worth and stepped up in the end! I also find this movie HILARIOUS! I just saw it recently and noticed I was laughing more then I did when I was younger 😂
The president is easily the best part! He is hilarious in almost every scene he is in 😂
I guess I get why nobody likes this movie, but I think it’s great!
Old post I know, but I agree. This movie has its flaws and doesn’t seize your attention like Shrek, but it is still a lot fun with some cheeky humor and good characters. I actually came to appreciate this movie more as I’ve gotten older. General W.R. Monger and the President are just two of the characters that are amazingly written and acted out as parodies.
I can never get over that "Ouh" sound Susan makes when gets hit by the meteor. It sounds underwhelming.
I hear ya
Honestly, I don't think it was nearly as bad as that. The characters are all pretty good references to the lesser talked about classic monster. The Fly=Dr. Cockroach. Black Lagoon creature=Link. Blob=Bob. 50 ft Woman=Ginormoca. Godzilla/Mothra=Insectasaurus.
isn't link also a refrence to the species between fish and mammal/land animal. Thats the reason for the name missing link, hes the missing link between land and water animals.
Their was also an invisable man monster in this movie (albeit a joke) which is obviously a refrence to the invisable man novel.

Growing up, we left movies in the dvd player for days, even weeks at a time and would go to bed with movies on. I've probably watched this movie over 200 times. It was one of the longest left in movies and we kept putting it back in when we didn't have a movie we wanted to put in.
I used to be able to quote the entire movie word for word with all the pauses between dialog. When I was like 11 years old XP.
Will always be one of my favorite films. Along with Aliens in the Attic.
These and dozens of other films we watched may not be the greatest, but the memories from when me and my brother were kids and quoting things back at each other was priceless and I love reliving those nostalgic memories.

OK I've never even seen the classic monster films like "The Fly" or "Godzilla" but I KNOW of them, I know there's other interpretations of "monsters" than the Halloween monsters like Dracula or ghosts. Like, has Dazz seriously never ever heard of a scifi horror before?? It's 90% mad science
Wait a minute, if he was talking about The Mummy before then he has to know of Frankenstein right? What does he mean "there's no science in monsters"?!
If you think about it, sci fi is a crucial part with monster stories, too
I agree, monsters being an aberration of humanity is the scariest. The narrative that humans create monsters, or humans are just one step from being monsters themselves is a thematic for many scifi horrors.
This movie is literally the best thing ever.

I'm pretty sure the reason for the costume change was so there's an explanation for the clothes shrinking with her when her power is taken - Galactar or whatever his name is didn't want her to be naked when he shrank her so he put her in some sort of fabric that would adapt to her size or something, alien fabric basically
Its like saiyan battle armor from dbz. That stuff can stretch like crazy.
While definitely a possibility her wedding dress was barely ripped at all when she initially grew, though that was most likely to keep the PG rating. Didn’t stop the internet though

I mean... I like this movie. I can understand other people's criticisms about it, but IMO this movie was not bad. I loved the dynamic between the monsters and I especially love the fact that Susan gained acceptance and grattitude with the monsters during her experience as Ginormica. She didn't need Derek to be happy and settle for a life of mediocrity. She wanted to go to Paris but was about to settle for Frescno and she got to go at the end of the movie. Plus, there were a few funny jokes in there and the president was pretty iconic.
My critiques would be that there could be a better way to pace the story and climax and the villan could have had a better motivation to destroy Earth rather than a cliché one. And he barely explained a reason because he was too busy cloning himself. And I feel that the other monsters could have had their story told in a better way than being explained in a meeting room, but then again we wouldn't have Ms. Ronson's screams so I digress.

Susan looks so beautiful...to me, at least.
And the fact that almost every other human looks terrible makes her look even more beautiful.
Oh and the movie was quiet good, in my opinion.
I have heard a fair amount of people say that with the exception of Susan, the other humans looked a bit off.
I personally like the grotesque designs of the people, for two reasons:
1.) In a movie about monsters being outcasts for being weird, having the 'normal human' characters look weird too outlines the hypocrisy, and;
2.) I'm 99.5% sure this is entirely coincidental, but the designs remind me of the Junji Ito / Satoshi Kon school of character design: Most human characters straddle the line between realistic and grotesque, save for the main female protagonist. The female protagonist tends to stand out even more in her beauty because of this, and is usually either the main victim of the horror, or is the horror herself. Susan fits both of those roles!
“A bit off”….. sure
Susan is the most regular human in the show in the world of caricatures. Even Galaxar feels like has more human quality than most that irks me while he's supposed to be a damn alien. Only rivalled by the General likeness.

Of course I always love when media makes that joke because you assume someone is something because of their title but then it turns out to be unrelated. Like when calling someone the president, first thought might be of the country but then find out its just a company. Still important but it makes the stakes a lot smaller. Or when someone throws around an acronym the audience thinks they're talking about but it turns out to be something way different like saying they used to work for the FBI and then when danger actually comes up they explain they worked at a place like Frank Burton Investments or something which is local enough they thought everyone else knew.

No, the video isn’t THAT kind of backwards feminism (such as man bashing) if you’re worried about it, but rather, it focuses on Gigantica, her self worth, and how she is capable of doing great things despite the men in her life (aka, her douche ex) telling her she is a burden and that he doesn’t want to live in her shadow. It’s actually a really interesting and informative video, and it changed my opinion on the movie (which I didn’t really enjoy) into a more positive experience overall upon rewatches
I'll check it out. Thanks
Yeah, I actually agree with that. I haven't watched that essay but I will. This film definitely doesn't hold up that well now that I'm older, at least technically speaking, but if there is one thing I was actually really surprised by? It's how well they handled Susan/Ginormica! I still love that she's actually such a realistic young woman through and through, with such a good character arc about self-worth. And she's just a really chill, actually nice and strong female character. We stan Ginormica.
@@ViktoriaMagrey Well said.
@@ViktoriaMagrey Fun fact: After Rex Havoc's rights were dropped, the plot was going to be a mix between Independence Day and DreamWorks' first film The Peacemaker, where Ms. Ronson (the original post-Rex Havoc protagonist) teams up with a colonel and the monsters to stop the aliens' plan from destroying major cities and disrupting cable TV service. Sony's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs already had the disaster film concept in an animated film, so DreamWorks changed the plot to be a standard sci-fi monster film, Ms. Ronson reduced to executive-producer Latifa Ouaou's cameo role (screaming at first four monsters before the general kicks her out of the war room), and the protagonist went to Ginormica/Susan Murphy instead.

If anything, it does so many hidden references and trope gags for the whole fun of it. The president is sorely incompetent, Monger's full name is W.R. The monsters too are also based on old hollywood monsters as mentioned (with ofc godzilla being an exception), etc etc. I like this movie for the nostalgia and jokes, but yea. I completely forgot about this movie, and I'ma be honest, the only thing I now remember about watching it as a kid was that I shipped my 4-ish year old self with the giant robots for some reason.
4:29 What are you talking about? That car scene in hilarious
Fun fact: With a budget of $175 million, this is the most expensive animated movie not produced by Disney/Pixar.

I unironically love this movie. It was a MAJOR part of my childhood, and so I’m probably more willing to overlook its flaws, but I still love this movie.
Honestly I don’t think it’s awful I used to watch it all the time when I was younger, always will be a classic with me.
DONT EVER HAVE AN OPINION EVER AGAIN 🥰🥰🥰
I remember a series that came out probably a couple years after the movie. It had more aliens and was more like "monsters and aliens" rather than versus. One character I remember the most was a small pink alien character that was supposed to be hyper-intelligent. Lastly it took place in the middle of the desert. I think it aired on Nick.
No it was called Monsters vs Aliens
@@racool911 I wasn't referring to the title, I was referring to how the characters interacted with each other.
@@kathydina3646 bruh, the Nick show was literally called Monsters Vs. Aliens. Yes, that’s right. The TV show has the exact same title as the movie. How creative is that for a name of a show based on a movie?
@@The_One_Time Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 was made and MvA series capitalizes on TMNT 2012 on the same *DAMN* network! TMNT 2012 series share the same title as TMNT 2007 this film capitalizes on.
Well in terms of animation movie standards of humans this year, its understandable if you compare it the animations nowadays but it's easy to forget that during 2009 this was a good animation film for KIDS. When I was a kid, I loved the characters, the story, and the jokes (especially the president scenes hahaha). What this video should have been about if it really wants to talk about terrible how MvA is should be the MvA show in Nickelodeon. The movie is a masterpiece for me when I was a kid, the show was confusing. I rest my rant. Ty :)
Except this movie came out in between Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon, both had great animation, so it's not the best excuse for me
@@captainvader921 this film has good animation. Character models and the like are actually quite good in this film considering all the simulation they needed to run things like Bob
@@adamstrong98 I'm not denying that, my issue is why do the humans look so weird, when this came out a year before HTTYD, the movie where the humans looked pretty good there. Heck, Pixar's Up came out the same year.
I don't know, maybe I'm setting my expectations too high
@@Victor_Graves I thought Ginormica looked nice.
Don't be dissing the movie when the president goes Beverly Hills on the Alien robot

It's a decent movie, it has feminism traits and none of the dudes are sexualising her. They only see her as a friend and want to help her feel comfortable as a giant throughout the whole movie.
?
@@texrot9781 What?
@@BitterJoyXx Pointing out the feminism trait specifically is rather an interesting take considering even some kid cartoons has feminism trait these days and radical feminism is basically spreading to every media

I have. I like the movie. But I can understand people not liking it.
I actually liked monsters vs aliens. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't bad either... It was dumb, but fun xD

I quite like this movie (and I even re-watched it last year!) , so color me surprised when the title sais it's terrible, I could agree with bad, but terrible...
I'm really interested in what you have to say so I'm gonna watch it now :)
EDIT :
While I agree with most of your points you haven't convinced me it's terrible. But I'm quite easily entertained, that part of me hasn't left with my childhood 🤗
This movie is hilarious and I won't let you tell me otherwise. Also, you completely missed the mark on what monsters they were trying to riff off. It's based on sixties and seventies sci fi monster movies, not mummies or zombies. (Not trying to sound mean though, great video even if I disagree!)
Also, is that the ARMS theme at the end? Someone remembers? :0
There was a missed seth rogan blob opportunity here 12:13

Ok we need to cancel this man ASAP.
