  • Hibs and Hearts hold a duopoly over the city of Edinburgh but it wasn't always like this. St Bernard's were very much a 3rd force in the capital but they have now been defunct for 70 years so in this video we will be looking at the rise and fall of St Bernard's FC.

I played for St Bernard’s under 21 juveniles in the late 70,s early 80,s. Don’t think there was any connection apart from the name. Can remember training at Inverleith Park and changing at Goldenacre rugby Stadium, trained under a single floodlight fixed to a tree 😁remember winning East of Scotland cup at Saughton Enclosure probably round about 1980. I can Remember we beat North Merchiston 1:0 in the semi finals at Portobello and we won the final against I think it was Whitson Star but I could be corrected in the final at Saughton Enclosure. Great Memories and a big thanks to Jim Tulloch who was our manager, he did not receive the thanks that he deserved for all his efforts. I think the Tulloch family had a history of running the club. Great memories

    I have known about
    Saint Bernards for decades, personally
back in the mid 90's round about 96 to 97
    BBC Radio Scotland
did a series on Scotland's forgotten football clubs.
The episodes I remember were the one on
    Saint Bernards &
On Abercorn F.C. a defunct football club from
    Paisley.
    I am originally from
Elderslie next to Paisley thar is why the story of
    Abercorn sticks in my memory.
    From what I understand
    the first club in
    Edinburgh was a club
    simply known as
Foot - ball . Club, I believe there is currently an amateur club playing under this name within
Edinburgh under this name in an attempt to
revive the old club in the modern day.
    The origina
    l Foot - ball . Club
as regards, apparently, prove pree dates
Sheffield F.C. the oldest club to have continuesly in existence.
    Keep Safe
    from
    Alan Shields
    Hamilton
    South Lanarkshire
    Scotland.

Another excellent video mate. I knew a little bit about St. Bernards in their early days, but didn't realise they had still been a club right up until the 1940s. So this vid was informative as well as very interesting for me. In the mid 1990s I actually lived in Edinburgh, not too far from King George V park, but can't honestly say I ever came across the sign about St. Bernards while I was there. Next time I'm back in Edinburgh I must go and look for it.

It might be a relatively recent addition, there seems to be a few modern amenities in the park so they must have redeveloped it at some point.

Imagine they had stuck around. They'd possibly still be a 3rd club in Edinburgh; behind Hearts and The Spartans, and just ahead of Hutchinson Vale.

Even more in the early days. 3rd Edinburgh Rifle Volunteers, Hanover, the Swifts, Brunswick, St Andrew (who in 1874 morphed into HMFC, Hearts having disbanded the previous year).

Another excellent video mate, any chance you could do one on the mental Claude Amelia Raith Rovers experiment back in 2004? Probably the worst football team I’ve ever seen play

Oh that’s definitely already on the list, I’m a Raith fan so I was definitely going to talk about it at some point
