    FENCING IS A SPORT and is not intended to train you do “realistic sword fighting”
    If this makes you mad go start a HEMA career or learn how this works. Take a Time Machine back to when fencing was about trying to stab your opponent!

      I did HEMA for about a year before I had to quit for personal reasons, I see the appeal of fencing, but was a bit blindsided by the rules when watching the olympics. I thought they were more like HEMA rules where you still had to fence and defend for a bit longer than the initial point to see if the opponent would still hit you. If you hit without being struck it would award points. If you hit the chest while the opponent snuck in a hit to your arms it would still award points but less so. If both fencers hit either their chests or their arms, no points would be given. If the attacker hit the opponents arms, while they in turn struck the chest, the defender would be awarded points.
      I think that ruleset would bring back a bit more tactics and strategy to the sport.
      What also caught me really offguard is the amount of turning away immediately from your opponent and yelling in the judges faces and almost always wanting a video recap from the judges. Almost seemed snobbish, entitled and just generally like poor sportsmanship to me.

    I didn't know fencing was so divisive as a sport. Went to my first class last night and had so much fun. Definitely feels like it's easy to pick up but incredibly hard to master. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to pick up a niche sport. Especially if you enjoy the dueling aspects of a traditional sports like Baseball or Boxing. Understanding right of way is the most important aspect of foil which is kind of the only turn off for me as I really enjoy the mental battle of epee but I also just picked up fencing so I'm not throwing shade either way. Also, the sport isn't insanely expensive compared to other sports. Kind of feels like American Football is way more expensive to get into than fencing.

    A lot of people seem to forget that fencing derives from actual real-life duels. If you'd remove the armour and make the swords sharp, it'd be very deadly - while most rapier duels were to "first blood", which is what fencing imitates, one bad cut or thrust could end your life.

    • @cloudmaster182
      @cloudmaster182 Před měsícem +13

      Except that fencing gives the point to whoever lands first and a lot of exchanges end with one person scoring a fraction of a second before their opponent, which would result in both parties being injured if it were a real swordfight. That's where most people's criticisms come from. It's a sport that has become so far removed from where it was derived that it's almost unrecognizable.
      Backswing is a very legit concept. You stab me mid-swing, the momentum is still going to catch you. Fencing disregards all of that in favor of simply touching them first

    • @TheNobody-qg6vq
      @TheNobody-qg6vq Před měsícem +5

      Rapiers are very different from the modern fencing antenna aswell. Epee's are triangulated and the size of a side sword with a pistol grip meaning that only peirces are effective where the 1700s rapier were both a thrust and cut weapon with and a double edged blade. It was a civilian self defense tool like the modern glock in comparison to any assault rifle. Great for defending yourself on the Streets, terrible for fighting a war on its lonesome.

    • @spikevalantine8336
      @spikevalantine8336 Před měsícem

      @@christianschellbruck9788 I think fencing is better at teaching distance, lunges and reflexes, while HEMA is more about defense, stability in your stances and fluent movements. I don't think that beginners in a fencing school would learn much about the "strong" and the "weak" parts in their blades when you can almost ignore a parry because their swords are so flexible that they only need small movements to disengage and attack from a different angle in one move.
      If you parry with bad posture in HEMA the weight of both your and your opponents swords plus the force they hit you with, will break your stance and leave you open to further attacks. If you attack with bad posture in Fencing, the opponent would easily land a point on you, with a bit of luck you will have struck first though, so it's still your point.
      Both Arts teach you different things that could benefit from each other. But to be fair anything could teach you some skill that could benefit something else entirely. Just like they say "Jack of all trades, master of none, but still better than a master of one."🤷‍♂
