FENCING IS A SPORT and is not intended to train you do “realistic sword fighting”
If this makes you mad go start a HEMA career or learn how this works. Take a Time Machine back to when fencing was about trying to stab your opponent!
I'm always flattered when people assume I am rich
Meanwhile your average fencer: oh no something broke. Now I have to sell my kidney and my first born child to buy a replacement

Maybe I'm new to the internet but I have this weird feeling that 97% of the people in here saying "it's boring" and "HEMA" do nothing physical whatsoever
@@jasonsantiago6308 you not alone trust 😭
100% accurate
They disrespect nonpreferred combat sports and/or martial arts to feel accomplished in lieu of actually learning and practicing one. Actual combat sport practitioners and martial artists are almost always very respectful towards other sports and disciplines.
I did HEMA for about a year before I had to quit for personal reasons, I see the appeal of fencing, but was a bit blindsided by the rules when watching the olympics. I thought they were more like HEMA rules where you still had to fence and defend for a bit longer than the initial point to see if the opponent would still hit you. If you hit without being struck it would award points. If you hit the chest while the opponent snuck in a hit to your arms it would still award points but less so. If both fencers hit either their chests or their arms, no points would be given. If the attacker hit the opponents arms, while they in turn struck the chest, the defender would be awarded points.
I think that ruleset would bring back a bit more tactics and strategy to the sport.
What also caught me really offguard is the amount of turning away immediately from your opponent and yelling in the judges faces and almost always wanting a video recap from the judges. Almost seemed snobbish, entitled and just generally like poor sportsmanship to me.
Am the “3%” and it’s still just underwhelming. I understand the athleticism involved to have such a quick first step but the swords have erectile dysfunction. No impact and floppy swords is not cool.
Golf: : 💀
For all the haters, there is a martial art that you want to look into call HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) that legit describes what you want
And its miles more cooler than 2 dude doing splits trying ti hit each other
Would watch HEMA any day over this sterile & boring “sport”
No amount of trendy background music and “highlight” reels can change the fact that fencing is boring af 😂
Or they could do Classical Fencing which is more akin to modeling than actual fencing
half of the Fencing haters are HEMA fanboys who are jealous that Fencing is more popular (which sucks, I think both Fencing and HEMA are very cool, it must be hard not being able to like two things at once, or accept that different people like different things)
Its like fencing but cooler
Not every sport involves self defense some are just a SPORT. Those comments are like watching a javelin throw competition and saying oh boxing is better in a real fight. Who in their right mind is bringing a javelin to a fight

Fencing and HEMA can be some of the cheapest sports if you do it right. All the materials are one price and then you have it for years. The only thing that costs money is tuition, which is literally just as pricey as any other martial arts or boxing class tuition. Or you can find an unofficial group and train for free. Idk where the idea this was a rich sport even came from. Yknow what is a rich person sport? Literally ANY snow sport like skiing or snowboarding. Idk why fencing is out here catching strays lol

I didn't know fencing was so divisive as a sport. Went to my first class last night and had so much fun. Definitely feels like it's easy to pick up but incredibly hard to master. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to pick up a niche sport. Especially if you enjoy the dueling aspects of a traditional sports like Baseball or Boxing. Understanding right of way is the most important aspect of foil which is kind of the only turn off for me as I really enjoy the mental battle of epee but I also just picked up fencing so I'm not throwing shade either way. Also, the sport isn't insanely expensive compared to other sports. Kind of feels like American Football is way more expensive to get into than fencing.
This video just proves the title
Seems like a lot of people are missing the point about fencing; no one said it was real sword fighting or that it was a martial art lmao. It's a sport and it can have some cool ass moments
My low take on modern fencing is how they move like cowards as if they don't know how to use their weapon to attack, defend, parry, riposte, feint, etc.
@@meidyot1672 never fenced in my life but the way y'all try your hardest to avoid the point makes me facepalm
What's your take on chess or swimming? Or running? They are running like cowards right?
But hey they are being cowards these damn fencers.
So stupid
@@blnnnn I'm idiot but come on comparing a sport that is established and ruled that way is also stupid. My argument is to look at old fencing, it has grace and art if you watch it as a non-fencer and compare it to today's fencing.
fencing is not a martial arts type beat. its a sport. thats why when you get hit, it doesn't hurt. you did a gj delivering that message.
Epee is a martial art no doubt
it is a martial art.
It is a martial art, since you're using techniques of attacking and defending against an opponent trying to hit you, and your objective is to hit them to score, so, it's essentially fighting
Dumb take
Fencing, at least originally, was a martial art. It's primary purpose was to kill.
I will say modern fencing has suffered what I like to call "Olympification", where the sport has become more point based than fight based. Reason why it's hard to follow unless you _KNOW_ the rules.
Same could be said of Olympic Taekwondo or Karate
“Boring rich person sport.” Nah, it’s fencing.
You have earned a new subscriber for defending my fav sport like this
I've done both HEMA and Modern Olympic Fencing. MOF is a sport. It's an athletic event with gamified rules that requires a great deal of athleticism and finesse to do. It isn't swordfighting, but that is OK. There are few sports these days that actually have roots in some form of martial context, people need to stop getting upset about it
i’ve no idea what happened in any of these matches. The sword is hard to see and it moves too fast. I just see two people flailing around and then apparently one of them won.
this is a fair statement, however this is probably due to it being a compilation. trying watching a full match and it will be easier, i recommending watching a mens foil bout as they are the most interesting to watch for me. or watch a oh sanguk the GOAT of mens sabre (IMO)
Yeah it's why I prefer hema matches. You can see the blade and the point has to be confirmed by guarding against potential retaliation. Gives a lot more incentive to use technique rather than just relying on speed
A lot of people seem to forget that fencing derives from actual real-life duels. If you'd remove the armour and make the swords sharp, it'd be very deadly - while most rapier duels were to "first blood", which is what fencing imitates, one bad cut or thrust could end your life.
Except that fencing gives the point to whoever lands first and a lot of exchanges end with one person scoring a fraction of a second before their opponent, which would result in both parties being injured if it were a real swordfight. That's where most people's criticisms come from. It's a sport that has become so far removed from where it was derived that it's almost unrecognizable.
Backswing is a very legit concept. You stab me mid-swing, the momentum is still going to catch you. Fencing disregards all of that in favor of simply touching them first
Rapiers are very different from the modern fencing antenna aswell. Epee's are triangulated and the size of a side sword with a pistol grip meaning that only peirces are effective where the 1700s rapier were both a thrust and cut weapon with and a double edged blade. It was a civilian self defense tool like the modern glock in comparison to any assault rifle. Great for defending yourself on the Streets, terrible for fighting a war on its lonesome.
@@cloudmaster182could say the same with archery, air pistol, boxing, taekwondo, judo, javelin throwing, kendo, etc. All pretty removed from actual combat in some capacity.
@@cloudmaster182 in foil and saber you dont get points by hitting first. And when you watch the video, often their is only one person who hit. (one light)
Its not at all far from real sword fighting. My students doing much better in HEMA class when they come from sport fencing with foil. Better than the ones who do HEMA only for the same period of time.
@@christianschellbruck9788 I think fencing is better at teaching distance, lunges and reflexes, while HEMA is more about defense, stability in your stances and fluent movements. I don't think that beginners in a fencing school would learn much about the "strong" and the "weak" parts in their blades when you can almost ignore a parry because their swords are so flexible that they only need small movements to disengage and attack from a different angle in one move.
If you parry with bad posture in HEMA the weight of both your and your opponents swords plus the force they hit you with, will break your stance and leave you open to further attacks. If you attack with bad posture in Fencing, the opponent would easily land a point on you, with a bit of luck you will have struck first though, so it's still your point.
Both Arts teach you different things that could benefit from each other. But to be fair anything could teach you some skill that could benefit something else entirely. Just like they say "Jack of all trades, master of none, but still better than a master of one."🤷♂
