About the postcard from Marge, I know I left a similar comment on a Main SCB video once, but it said in the book that she was on vacation on the Isle of Wight, so that is clearly the main reason for her writing the post card, it's not like she was sitting at home and got ill and decided to send a postcard about it. And if she was on vacation and got ill during her vacation, I think that is a totally legit thing to write in the post card, something like: "On the Isle of Wight. Weather is nice, but I was stuck in my hotel room all day feeling ill, probably that whelk I had for dinner yesterday."

From a UK perspective: Yes school holidays start around Mid-July. And regarding the school uniforms, when I went school in the late 90's some schools just sold patches you could sew on to generic school uniforms so Petunia dyeing Harry's uniform grey could work.

As someone from Britain, I think whelks are a commonish dish/snack people have but are mainly eaten by people living along the coastline I have never eaten a whelk before as I am from very much the centre of England (Birmingham) but I believe they come in jars or tins kinda like sardines and olives, It does make complete sense as shes on the Isle of Wight.
Dumbledore told Hagrid he couldn't pick him up until his birthday. if it had been nearly a decade since you dropped of a baby to be "taken care of" by some people that Minerva Mcgonagall described as "the worst sort of muggles"... id have gotten there at 11 pm the night before, and waited in the rain (especially since i have my umbrella) just to pick up the kid as literally early as possible too!!

The hotel where they stay before the shack is in Cokeworth, which is the same town that Spinner's End is in. This is something I didn't notice until my recent read throughs. Just as an FYI, in a lot of schools in the UK, a school uniform is not school issued. The school sets a "uniform," for example, navy blue trousers and jumper and a light blue polo shirt. As parents, you then have the option to source that uniform from various places. There will be shirts and jumpers with the school logo available from the school and/or a local vendor. But you can also just pick up plain stuff from the supermarket.
We would generally call that a “dress code” then. Uniform = special clothing you buy from a uniform store, all manufactured by the same place. Dress code = school sends a rule book home on what you can wear, but it’s on you to find it. I could see him getting a pet then getting quickly bored of it. As to the fact that Dudley took it to school, I'm not sure if the British schools have it, but maybe he took it for show and tell and someone else brought the air gun. If the bird has its wings clipped, then it couldn't have run away Even if out of its cage. As to the kid bringing the gun to school to trade with Dudley or for show and tell, I'd imagine If he wasn't allowed to bring, he might have just traded it with Dudley after school and left in his parents car that day or something if they plan to head on it. It's also good to consider that this was in the '90s, and in Britain. Perhaps British schools would allow something like an air gun since it's basically a really painful toy at worst in theory. (I'm not British, so these are guesses) As far as Vernon's whistling or singing tiptoe through the tulips, I doubt he's kept up much with the latest pop hits. It may just be something he learned what he was in grade school, since I'm pretty sure it's a song kids would sing in schol, and he just happens to remember it. Or maybe he picked it up or was reminded of the song by Dudley singing it for his music class or a school concert or something to that effect. Again, though, these are all theories from an American perspective. I don't know if they have those kind of things in Britain, but I assume they do. As far as the Dursleys not wanting Harry to go to school, it's probably just part of their entire philosophy of "if you ignore it or pretend it doesn't exist, it'll eventually just go away". On the other hand though, if they were intelligent about it, they'd realize that the kind of power Harry has could be very dangerous if uncontrolled. (For examples, see the obscurials in the Harry Potter series, as well as any alpha level untrained mutant in the X-Men series.) As far as the fact that Harry's birthday should have been on a Wednesday, and not a Tuesday, it's good to consider that we're relying on the understanding of the days of the week of Dudley and Hagrid. I could see both messing it up. That said, though, it's also good to remember that Harry probably wasn't all that big a fan of his own birthday due to the fact that it's almost a day to dread since all that happens is the Dursleys do things to be extra mean like giving him a Kleenex and an old sock for his birthday (versus the pile of loot he sees Dudley get every year.) Another thing to consider, if Harry had gotten one of the letters and been able to read it, he would never have responded since he would have thought it was all a joke (a belief which the Dursleys would have encouraged.) Without Hagrid to prove it's all real, he never believes it, he develops an obscurus, then kills a lot of people when it explodes.

From a London viewer! : the summer holidays are six weeks long, start in mid July (the last few weeks of the school year is usually fun and school trips after exams… and sports days etc) and end early early September. We have common beer and oyster festivals, we eat muscles at fancy restaurants… never have I ever seen a whelk on a menu NOR eaten one myself 😂 …we also have such strict gun control that air rifles, which are excempt from licensing, are pretty common in the country side… so Surrey is plausible with a ‘bellow-stairs-insecure’ father or older brother. I actually had a thought about a month or two before you guys announced this. Well more of a wish I knew would never come true but I wanted you guys to make a sort of commentary audio track for the movies. Something that would line up perfectly with each movie so it would be like watching them with you guys. I have to say, this is sooooo much better than that. I already commented on the release video on the SCB channel but I really can’t express how genuinely exciting this series is for me. I’ve been subscribed to SCB for a few months now watching so many HP videos you’ve made over the years and the whole channel is absolutely fantastic! A particular favorite of mine is the Harry in Slytherin series. That was like experiencing the whole story again as if it were new! You guys are AWESOME! I’ve genuinely been raving about this series since you announced it and I will definitely be watching every week the whole way through. The journey through these books with you guys is going to be so amazing. All of your theories and combing through each detail is absolutely something that every Potterhead should experience!
Just one question that always bugged me. The Dursleys arrived with the boat. Hagrid and Harry leave with the boat. How do the Dursleys get off the island to go home?

Welks are just common seafood snacks to get when you visit the seaside, definitely not fancy food. You don't scrape them out of the shells, they are ready prepared.
Regarding the fact that the Dursleys didn't want Harry to go to Hogwarts was most likely because abusers are all about control. They actively let you know they don't like you but they want you around so they keep the sense of control. If the series was redone, I feel like it could very well be told with a much darker tone when portraying the Dursley home. The mere fact that we're having to "discover" just how awful the Dursleys were, goes to show how acceptable abuse was within society at the time.

It's never mentioned how, but harry also fixes his water logged wristwatch between the events of the 5th book. He doesn't do it with magic, because he should have been with the Dursleys at the time
With regards to the rations Vernon had for them staying at the hut on the rock. They arrived there on 30th July and the Hogwarts letter stated that Harry needed to reply by the 31st July. So they only needed to stay till the next evening, then they could return home. Or at least that's what he was hoping.

I’m from Birmingham in the uk and the summer holiday always started on my bday for us which is the 19th of July so usually between the 18th-the 25th depending on the weekday really cuz we usually break up on a Friday

Reg socks in the wizarding world, I actually always thought it was significant because it was so UNMAGICAL. Homemade, everyday item with no special abilities that both wizards and muggles use the same way. Dumbledore has access to basically all the most magical items/books etc so to receive a homemade cozy gift makes sense, and Dobby of course is not even allowed the basic necessities in either wizard or muggle sense despite being intrinsically magical. So even the most unmagical item like socks becomes magic by releasing Dobby but only because Lucius repels it (he wouldn’t if it was magic or special)
I feel like it's very, very common for abusive families to have the attitude of "I hate having you around but I refuse to let you leave" It's like they want you there to be the one they direct all their hate and blame towards

Hagrid says that he was allowed to use a bit of magic to follow Harry and make sure he gets his letters, so I've imagined that Hagrid is the one coming up with crazier and crazier letter ideas. I bet he was told, "If Harry doesn't get a letter by his birthday, knock on the door and give him one," and dang, he sure does.
Tiptoe through the tulips is a song used in the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, I think this is trying to foreshadow just how mad Vernon is being driven by the letters
One thing I noticed about Dumbledore trolling the dursleys is that Dumbledore was already planning on sending Hagrid to fetch the stone, it makes sense that he just told him to fetch Harry too. Dumbledore knew how badly Harry was treated, and so he probably assumed Harry wouldn’t get the letter which means Dumbledore did the entire letter thing PURELY to mess with the Dursleys

Ok so the thing about uniforms at least where I live, yes we have the formal private school uniforms but public school uniforms aren’t quite as formal it’s more like a strict dress code with appropriate types of clothes. Certain colors, and things are okay to wear. Like our high school tops have to be T-shirts polos or crew neck sweatshirts in red grey or white with the exception of clothing purchased from the school store. bottoms have to be jeans or khakis. Nothing can be too tight or sag. Sweatpants and shorts can only be worn during gym. So it’s way more like a super strict dress code vs a true uniform but it makes it easier for parents to shop and for kids to conform vs super expensive outfit like uniforms or shopping at trendy stores for school. I can see how if he’s going to public school maybe they just have to wear grey.
Think how much magic toddler Harry would have been doing naturally as a child when he first came to the Dursley after being only with his parents so long. After all, by the time he was 1 he was flying on a toy broom very well and all the odd things that happened around him.
Just found this podcast, I’ve been watching your theories for a while. You mention the lack of money but I feel like you are equating how easy it is to get money now but in the early 90’s it was cash and check still. ATM’s were still new and credit cards had to to be pressed and turned into a bank in some cases.
Hagrid literally said he got to use magic to get Harry his letters. I guess that is in the next chapter but Its not like you haven't mentioned things from further in the books.
I have always always wondered why the dursleys fight so hard to keep harry when they hate him so much. I guess the only explanation could be that they hate the existence of magic more than they hate Harry's presence in their home

One of the reasons why Dursley go out of their way to avoid the letter and don’t let them go to school is because they wanted to beat being a wizard out of Harry. They wanted to make him into a normal boy
I know most dates don't like up to the weekday they actually happened on, but also I think we should remember that in the 90's it was probably not as easy to look up these things as it is today, so why bother for such a trivial thing. I do however know of one date that does line up with the real world, but it's WAY down the line. In Half-Blood Prince a Hogsmeade visit has been canceled and Ron is disappointed since it was on his birthday, and March 1st was in fact on a Saturday in 1997.
Regarding the camping, isn't there something in the fourth book where they're pitching the tent for the QWC and it says that Harry had never gone camping, but the Dursleys had?
The sleeping bag could have been bought for Dudley to have sleepovers at his friend's. Normal schools in the UK only really have a tie as the main part of their uniform. Usually grey sweaters and trousers where standard. The tie identified the school
I just red the first four chapters of the first Harry Potter book and I sped up because I knew you guys were doing this podcast. I was reading I thought the same thing why wouldn't they have been happy to get rid of Harry for 10 months in the year. I think McGonigal and Dumbledore knew that it was going to be difficult for Harry to receive his letter. That's why Dumbledore sent Hey Grid.

About the uniform, I know in Canada some uniformed elementary schools dont have a school issued uniform - long after I left, my old school they changed to a uniform and any plain white t-shirt/long sleeve/polo and navy bottoms will do. It made it affordable for families of all backgrounds. Not sure if any schools in Britain would do the same, but it's not an unheard of possibility that any grey clothes could be a uniform
At my school (in England), we had generic white shirt and dark grey trousers but the blazer and tie were school specific (at our school, each year group had a different tie). We also had a PE uniform, with the shorts just needing to be black but the t-shirt and socks were school specific. But this was also in the north of England, not the south, and about 10 years ago. I know that our school uniform was changed to be more unique because we kept getting blamed for what students from another school were doing.
Maybe it's because I'm so mechanically inclined, but I always imagine based on the line about the clock repair that Harry would spend a lot of his time at the Burrow with Arthur in his shed showing him how certain objects worked.
It's slightly funny to me that Harry is repairing an alarm clock. I have this Fantasy book were the protagonist get's pulled into a world inside a clock and his task is to save that world.. Now this world was accitently created by a clock maker and a scientist who actually wanted to make the Philosopher's stone. -i always picutred Harry screwing together a repliqua of one of those old fashioned wind up clocks with bells on top by the way.
I knew what a whelk was because of Final Fantasy 3/6. The first boss is called "Whelk," so I looked it up in middle school when I first played that game. And it is a snail in that game!
Why the Dursley don't want that Harry go to Hogwarts? Maybe because they don't want to lose the control they have on Harry, because if see he has magic, power, and learn to use it... they are doom. And abusive people hate to lose the persons that they are abusing, lose the power rush of that.
Interestingly, 31 July is a Tuesday in 2001! I don't like thinking of HP in the past, I like to think of it in the same time as we watched it- like the films! Tuesday being the date in 2001 helps me pretend that I think (plus like you say, the Nimbus 2000 etc. maybe she changed it retrospectively? Or maybe an editor made her change it for this one, she was afterall trying to get it published!)
I think the Dursely's have been campung at some point, I think there is a moment when at the Quidditch World Cup and Harry thinks it is like going camping and mentions that he was not taken when his aunt and uncle went camping
Yeah I thought for sure that Dudley would get to open the letter that was in the hallway the second time it came around. I would definitely be ripping into that letter if I was in that situation.

As far as the fact that Harry's birthday should have been on a Wednesday, and not a Tuesday, it's good to consider that we're relying on the understanding of the days of the week of Dudley and Hagrid. I could see both messing it up. That said, though, it's also good to remember that Harry probably wasn't all that big a fan of his own birthday due to the fact that it's almost a day to dread since all that happens is the Dursleys do things to be extra mean like giving him a Kleenex and an old sock for his birthday (versus the pile of loot he sees Dudley get every year.)
Another thing to consider, if Harry had gotten one of the letters and been able to read it, he would never have responded since he would have thought it was all a joke (a belief which the Dursleys would have encouraged.) Without Hagrid to prove it's all real, he never believes it, he develops an obscurus, then kills a lot of people when it explodes.
Man I love these, when I listing to the books little details pop up and I'd want to discuss them, but I have no one to discuss it with. So these being as in depth as they are make them a great time. Also J and Ben have great chemistry for podcasting.

From a London viewer! : the summer holidays are six weeks long, start in mid July (the last few weeks of the school year is usually fun and school trips after exams… and sports days etc) and end early early September. We have common beer and oyster festivals, we eat muscles at fancy restaurants… never have I ever seen a whelk on a menu NOR eaten one myself 😂 …we also have such strict gun control that air rifles, which are excempt from licensing, are pretty common in the country side… so Surrey is plausible with a ‘bellow-stairs-insecure’ father or older brother.

I actually had a thought about a month or two before you guys announced this. Well more of a wish I knew would never come true but I wanted you guys to make a sort of commentary audio track for the movies. Something that would line up perfectly with each movie so it would be like watching them with you guys. I have to say, this is sooooo much better than that. I already commented on the release video on the SCB channel but I really can’t express how genuinely exciting this series is for me. I’ve been subscribed to SCB for a few months now watching so many HP videos you’ve made over the years and the whole channel is absolutely fantastic! A particular favorite of mine is the Harry in Slytherin series. That was like experiencing the whole story again as if it were new! You guys are AWESOME! I’ve genuinely been raving about this series since you announced it and I will definitely be watching every week the whole way through. The journey through these books with you guys is going to be so amazing. All of your theories and combing through each detail is absolutely something that every Potterhead should experience!
Just one question that always bugged me. The Dursleys arrived with the boat. Hagrid and Harry leave with the boat. How do the Dursleys get off the island to go home?

Regarding the fact that the Dursleys didn't want Harry to go to Hogwarts was most likely because abusers are all about control. They actively let you know they don't like you but they want you around so they keep the sense of control.
If the series was redone, I feel like it could very well be told with a much darker tone when portraying the Dursley home. The mere fact that we're having to "discover" just how awful the Dursleys were, goes to show how acceptable abuse was within society at the time.
Also mental abuse is always harder to dedect.

With regards to the rations Vernon had for them staying at the hut on the rock. They arrived there on 30th July and the Hogwarts letter stated that Harry needed to reply by the 31st July. So they only needed to stay till the next evening, then they could return home. Or at least that's what he was hoping.

I’m from Birmingham in the uk and the summer holiday always started on my bday for us which is the 19th of July so usually between the 18th-the 25th depending on the weekday really cuz we usually break up on a Friday

Reg socks in the wizarding world, I actually always thought it was significant because it was so UNMAGICAL. Homemade, everyday item with no special abilities that both wizards and muggles use the same way.
Dumbledore has access to basically all the most magical items/books etc so to receive a homemade cozy gift makes sense, and Dobby of course is not even allowed the basic necessities in either wizard or muggle sense despite being intrinsically magical. So even the most unmagical item like socks becomes magic by releasing Dobby but only because Lucius repels it (he wouldn’t if it was magic or special)
I feel like it's very, very common for abusive families to have the attitude of "I hate having you around but I refuse to let you leave"
It's like they want you there to be the one they direct all their hate and blame towards

Hagrid says that he was allowed to use a bit of magic to follow Harry and make sure he gets his letters, so I've imagined that Hagrid is the one coming up with crazier and crazier letter ideas. One thing I noticed about Dumbledore trolling the dursleys is that Dumbledore was already planning on sending Hagrid to fetch the stone, it makes sense that he just told him to fetch Harry too.
Dumbledore knew how badly Harry was treated, and so he probably assumed Harry wouldn’t get the letter which means Dumbledore did the entire letter thing PURELY to mess with the Dursleys
Also all muggle born students are hand delivered the letters by a member of staff

Ok so the thing about uniforms at least where I live, yes we have the formal private school uniforms but public school uniforms aren’t quite as formal it’s more like a strict dress code with appropriate types of clothes. Certain colors, and things are okay to wear. Like our high school tops have to be T-shirts polos or crew neck sweatshirts in red grey or white with the exception of clothing purchased from the school store. bottoms have to be jeans or khakis. Nothing can be too tight or sag. Sweatpants and shorts can only be worn during gym. So it’s way more like a super strict dress code vs a true uniform but it makes it easier for parents to shop and for kids to conform vs super expensive outfit like uniforms or shopping at trendy stores for school. I can see how if he’s going to public school maybe they just have to wear grey.
Think how much magic toddler Harry would have been doing naturally as a child when he first came to the Dursley after being only with his parents so long. After all, by the time he was 1 he was flying on a toy broom very well and all the odd things that happened around him.

Just found this podcast, I’ve been watching your theories for a while. You mention the lack of money but I feel like you are equating how easy it is to get money now but in the early 90’s it was cash and check still. ATM’s were still new and credit cards had to to be pressed and turned into a bank in some cases.

I have always always wondered why the dursleys fight so hard to keep harry when they hate him so much. I guess the only explanation could be that they hate the existence of magic more than they hate Harry's presence in their home

One of the reasons why Dursley go out of their way to avoid the letter and don’t let them go to school is because they wanted to beat being a wizard out of Harry.

I know most dates don't like up to the weekday they actually happened on, but also I think we should remember that in the 90's it was probably not as easy to look up these things as it is today, so why bother for such a trivial thing. I do however know of one date that does line up with the real world, but it's WAY down the line. In Half-Blood Prince a Hogsmeade visit has been canceled and Ron is disappointed since it was on his birthday, and March 1st was in fact on a Saturday in 1997.

Normal schools in the UK only really have a tie as the main part of their uniform. Usually grey sweaters and trousers where standard. The tie identified the school

About the uniform, I know in Canada some uniformed elementary schools dont have a school issued uniform - long after I left, my old school they changed to a uniform and any plain white t-shirt/long sleeve/polo and navy bottoms will do. It made it affordable for families of all backgrounds. Not sure if any schools in Britain would do the same, but it's not an unheard of possibility that any grey clothes could be a uniform
At my school (in England), we had generic white shirt and dark grey trousers but the blazer and tie were school specific (at our school, each year group had a different tie). We also had a PE uniform, with the shorts just needing to be black but the t-shirt and socks were school specific. But this was also in the north of England, not the south, and about 10 years ago. I know that our school uniform was changed to be more unique because we kept getting blamed for what students from another school were doing.

It's slightly funny to me that Harry is repairing an alarm clock. I have this Fantasy book were the protagonist get's pulled into a world inside a clock and his task is to save that world.. Now this world was accitently created by a clock maker and a scientist who actually wanted to make the Philosopher's stone. -i always picutred Harry screwing together a repliqua of one of those old fashioned wind up clocks with bells on top by the way.
I could imagine a civil war if Harry did get a Maledictis under the Dursleys. For allowing Harry to grow up in those conditions.

the dursleys have gone camping actually. harry says so in book 4 when they put up the tent at the world cup. they never took harry with them

Interestingly, 31 July is a Tuesday in 2001! I don't like thinking of HP in the past, I like to think of it in the same time as we watched it- like the films! Tuesday being the date in 2001 helps me pretend that I think (plus like you say, the Nimbus 2000 etc. maybe she changed it retrospectively? Or maybe an editor made her change it for this one, she was afterall trying to get it published!)
I definitely think Smeltings is supposed to be a parody of British boarding schools, and their ridiculous rules and uniforms.
I think the Dursely's have been campung at some point, I think there is a moment when at the Quidditch World Cup and Harry thinks it is like going camping and mentions that he was not taken when his aunt and uncle went camping
Yeah I thought for sure that Dudley would get to open the letter that was in the hallway the second time it came around. I would definitely be ripping into that letter if I was in that situation.
