  • Morgan Stephens, a USC graduate on the verge of beginning her dream journalism job, suddenly had her career derailed when she came down with COVID-19 in late 2020. Jasmine Viel spoke with both Stephens and her former professor at USC, Dr. Caitlin McAuley, on the COVID recovery clinic at her alma mater and how it saved her life.

    Ive had this for 17 months now. The first 5 months were the worst thing I think a human can possibly go through. I had auditory hallucinations, a feeling of impending doom or extreme fear for no reason, The brain fog was so bad I couldn't drive a car, I also would vomit 3-4 days a week. It can me an allergy to basically every food. The fatigue was so intense that I basically would have to lay down after walking down the street. I pushed through and im at the end of this hopefully. The last few weeks I started feeling like myself again. Anyone who gets this understand the mental anguish it creates. Its not a normal flu. The panic attacks, depressive episodes, severe anxiety, sensitive nerves, and the heart rate stuff is terrifying. Look back at how I was about a year ago, I don't know if I could possibly handle that again. You can physically feel death on your finger tip. It has changed me mentally though for the better. I no longer need material goods, I no longer need to be satisfied by drinking or going out with friend to make me happy. True happiness is being able to wake up without suffering with your health. 36 years old male, and i am ill over a year. I am living hell. And it isn't about the respiratory system. Before covid i had gi issues like ibs flatulence etc.. but i could live with them. After covid it is like my GI problems started to have their own neurological problems. Involuntarily swallowing (!) started. My tongue and jaw started to loosen. It is unseen. I felt like there was a tremor and tension through my throat-esophagus track. After losing 15 pounds, 3-4 weeks later i got little better and gained my appetite, but then i spit light red blood with stomachache and throatache. I did endoscopy immediately but they didn't find anything. Then everything got worse. I lost my appetite for good over a year. I am experiencing a worsening throatache that no ENT professors can detect with camera. I have examined by over 60 professors. Gastroenterologists, ENT Professors, Neurologists etc.. i did blood tests, endoscopies, colonoscopy, CTs, MRs even EMGs. Throat pain is killing me. Loss of appetite, fatigue.. these are also challenging. I have other symptoms but i dont know how can i bare this throat pain. Gabapentine isn't working. Diclofenac isn't working. They can not tell any reason other than long covid.

      Have you taken Anxiety or Antidepressants? ( I am not saying you should)

      @@denowilliams4381 i took probiotics. But they didn't help. I don't have any problem with driving or using any vehicle. My psychiatrist prescribed 4 different antidepressant in 3-4 months. None of them helped me with the constant pain in throat. Only then my psychiatrist accepted that the cause of pain and other symptoms like the tension-tremor in throat-esophageal track "may not be" psychological. In my blood stool my cortisol level and my histamin level are ok. I don't experience so much cognitive disorders or brain fog. But one week after i got infected i had trouble to watch tv. I don't know how to describe that feeling. It can be hard to follow up the image on tv. It is like a minor visual paralysis. But i experience this so rarely. Unexplained throat pain is very tiring. I wish they could measure the pain. But they don't even know that it exists.

      @Dermot Fitzpatrick thank you but it is not that easy. At least for some of us it is not even close to solution. First of all the study you mentioned is: Plasma cytokine levels reveal deficiencies in IL-8 and gamma interferon in Long-COVID right? This study includes only 12 long covid patients! When you say "%100 of long covid patients" you are just talking about 12 people! Some of the long covid patients have normal IL-8 and gammainterferon level. For example my IL-8 is 4.03 pg/mL and it should be under 13.87 pg/mL. And my INF-gamma is 2.95 pg/mL and it should be under 8.41 pg/mL. According to incelldx i am in range. And about cortisol, when i take corticosteroid like methylprednisolone it helps me with my diarrhea and gagging. It only helps me with these two symptoms. It doesn't help me with my main symptoms like unidentified throat pain, tremor and fatigue etc. So you don't even have clue for some of us.

    • @burakbolat9729
      @burakbolat9729 Před rokem

      @Dermot Fitzpatrick as i typed it is not the solution for my symptoms. It can be helpful for some patients but not for me. They can not even explain my chronic pain.

      @Dermot Fitzpatrick i used antibiotics for that. It is not main problem. I appreciate your help if you aren't a troll. But i want to know what you were assuming when i typed "i have been examined by 60 professors." This is not an easy phenomenon. You can not solve this by over the counter med advice. Some people are ending their life for crying out loud. How many people want to end their life becuse of hpylori?! Dr. Akiko iwasaki says: "There is urgency to understanding this disease because there are people suffering so much so that they are contemplating of taking their own lives to end the misery. If we can stop one more person from such an act of desperation, I think we would have done our job. So, every day, every minute counts. And I understand that, and that’s part of the reason I don’t get much sleep." This is the professor who knows the complexity of this problem. So please just try to understand and don't insult sufferer's mind.
