I can fully understand your appreciation, they're, both, amazing performers. Yet, I cannot agree that Liza deserved her Oscar. Liza couldn't even use a decent English accent. So, in order to still profit off her "star power", they chose to make Sally American and make Cliff English. Which makes absolutely no sense. Cliff's wide-eyed hopefulness and naiveté is distinctly American. His desire to get out and see the world and find inspiration for a novel makes sense, if he's traveling all the way from America. Instead, he's taken a 6 hr fairy from Hull and a days train ride. Don't forget that the Germans bombed the hell out of England so Cliff pleading with Sally to come with him for safety is, simply, retarded. Also.... Liza sang the role too well. If Sally was that good, she wouldn't be at the Kit Kat Klub. Have you read The Berlin Stories or I Am A Camera? Sally can't really sing, can't really dance, a pathological liar, as fake as can be. She's a complete mess.... but there just something about her that you can't live without. A childlike playfulness mixed with a naughty girl's rebellion. An innocent virgin crossed with a seasoned whore. I believe Cabaret is the perfect story and, therefore, the perfect play. It is equally demanding of Acting, Dancing, and Singing. You cannot skimp on any aspect, most importantly, the story and, thanks to Liza, the story was ruined. ".... the play's the thing. " Shakespeare was right 400 years ago and he's right today. You cannot honor the character if you dishonor the story.
Robert Duvall, James Caan and Al Pacino were all up for the supporting actor Oscar that year and lost to Joel Grey. But when you watch "Cabaret" you cannot take your eyes off of Grey when he's on the screen. He totally owned the role and although he doesn't have a word of spoken dialogue, he creates a disturbing, mesmerizing, dangerous character. His is simply one of the greatest roles in movie musical history. That's why he won his deserved Oscar.
Him in Wilkommen is absolutely spell-bounding: he adds so much to every word, every word spoken in his accent, the movement, the expressions. They all just come together to really create a frightening character.
Bob Fosse didn't want Joel Grey (Tony winner for his role in the musical). The producers wanted Grey and Grey said "it's either me of Fosse".They chose Grey. From then on Fosse and Grey were at each other's throats the entire time.
Yes, the hands! I noticed that too... Not only how she uses them in the numbers, but shortly after she first invites Brian into her room, from "Divine decadence...!" and "Come in, Brian, darling..." whenever she puts a record on.... a kind of rapt writhing.... I remember being completely enchanted and bowled over by Minnelli when this film came out in the cinema.... and went back to see it several times on the big screen, back in those days before we had the "diminishing" small-screen video versions of major films... Younger generations can never know that special (at that time, unique..) big screen magic of "cinema...." Yes, of course they can enjoy the cinema experience now - but pre-video, there was a difference between small-screen TV, and what you made an effort to see at the pictures - which gave it a "movie-mystique" that has gone... now everything can be screened on anything... it's the quality of "special" that's gone. Older people will know what I mean... (I'm mid-sixties). I am sure I will be derided by some (younger?) for saying that - but that underlines my point... Maybe you don't acknowledge that magic if you never knew it... like those who don't get the magnificent significance of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and others who changed pop through the sixties... You had to be there and experience that to recognise and acknowledge the difference.... Back to cinema... there will be those (perhaps of my generation), who say cinemas are so much better now - cleaner, and smoke-free... ah yes, but for me, films seen through the haze and smell of cigarette smoke, was all part of that special "cinema" experience... a kind of "smellovision," that just added to the atmosphere (in every sense...!) - somehow perfect for war films, city films... you name it.... It was "going to the pictures....!" Does anyone "go to the pictures" now...?
I believe this is the performance that made Liza Minnelli a superstar, rightly so. Other commenters mention the movement of Ms. Minnelli's hands -- I too found her hand gestures and movements to be absolutely perfect for this song.
This is a song that poor people can relate to far better than the rich I suspect - the rich are the ones who tell everyone that money doesn't matter because to them it doesn't, they don't have to worry about rent, bills, food, they're never going to be poor or homeless. The song is pointing out that when you're poor and hungry you know exactly how much money matters. John Lennon wrote 'Money - That's What I Want' when he was poor and broke; he wrote 'All You Need is Love' when he was a millionaire.
Within the context of the movie, the message of the song is broader than about the struggles of living in a depression. As I said, the song mocks a people (not money as you indicated) that only see life in terms of money. The song comes up as Sally fantasizes about marrying Baron Max, for his money not for love. For those who are obsessed with it, money makes their world go round nothing else, not even love. So contextually, the song conveys a broader and more classic message.
9 years later .... really? They explicitly mention hunger! That's what happens when you truly run out of money. It's not about uneducated people not knowing about the "true meaning of life".
@@frankman2 There are many "uneducated people" who know the true meaning of life. Some of them are even poor. But there are a lot of "educated" people who may have a lot of money yet may not know that life is more than just about filling your stomach. They are impoverished indeed, and yes, hungry.

This is the best interpretation of Cabaret. Even the Broadway revival with Alan Cummings...just too overtly sexual. Joel Grey was just plain creepy with a hint of sexual perversion...wasn't all in your face. And that made it way better.
Although Liza gives the worst interpretation of Sally Bowles, who is supposed to be completely untalented - Jane Horricks was absolutely spot on and even hams up Sally's lack of talent, Liza is just too polished and perfect.

this is so amazing, I can't stop singing this song
Zoila-Elizabeth Salazar You can sing this song? You must very talent
Money makes the world go around
...the world go around
...the world go around.
Money makes the world go around
It makes the world go 'round.
A mark, a yen, a buck or a pound
...a buck or a pound
...a buck or a pound.
Is all that makes the world go around
That clinking, clanking sound...
Can make the world go 'round
Money money money money
Money money money money
Money money money...
If you happen to rich
And you feel like a night's entertainment
You can pay for a gay escapade.
If you happen to be rich and alone
And you need a companion
You can ring (ting-a-ling) for the maid.
If you happen to be rich
And you find you are left by your lover,
And you moan and you groan quite a lot
You can take it on the chin,
Call a cab and begin to recover
On your 14-karat yacht! WHAT!?
Money makes the world go around
...the world go around
...the world go around.
Money makes the world go aroung
Of that we both are sure...
*Rasberry sound* on being poor!
Money money money money
Money money money money
Money money money...
When you haven't any coal in the stove
And you freeze in the winter
And you curse to the wind at your fate.
When you haven't any shoes on your feet,
Your coat's thin as paper,
And you look 30 pounds underweight
When you go to get a word of advice
From the fat little pastor,
He will tell you to love evermore.
But when hunger comes to rap,
Rat-a-tat rat-a-tat at the window
*Knock knock* (at the window)
Who's there? (hunger) oh, hunger!!
See how love flies out the door...
For, money makes the world go around
...the world go around
...the world go around.
Money makes the world go 'round
The clinking, clanking sound of...
Money money money money
Money money money money...
Get a little, get a little
Money money money money...
Mark, a yen, a buck or a pound,
That clinking, clanking, clunking sound,
Is all that makes the world go 'round,
It makes the world go 'round!
Oh, thank you so much! I was searching for this comment

The best song and video(movie) ever. I watch this again and again and again...:)
What a PERFECTION:)!!! so detailed movement in this picture, it is fantastic and fabulous! these day movies do not have any of this, sadly.
absolutely my favorite performance!
The fugue/canon parts are so amazing!
Canon 😝 fugue would be wayyyyy different
Sean Fogarty how so ?
I saw her in New York ..the way she is moving is uncrecibul. Only her...the best
This,ABBA and Gamma Ray the best songs about money
How awesome are these two? I love them and I'm glad they won Oscars :D
I'm loving that people on tiktok are freaking out bc they're just now finding out about the plot of cabaret and it's because of this song lol
Oustanding performance, art at its best.
I FINALLY FOUND IT
THIS SONG HAS BEEN STUCK IN MY HEAD FOR AGES
My brother and I sing this for our Grandma except we make the dance moves more appropriate than these in the video this was one of her favorite songs in the movie and she loves it when my brother and I do it for her. Plus I relate to the song cause covid put me out of a job and my unemployment stopped working cause I worked at a AMC theater but they are only open three days a week now and since I'm new I'm the very last person that gets a schedule and works and i haven't worked in a month!! So I'm really singing this song cause I need money!! 😂😢😭
This is me when it's my birthday and my relatives hand me envelopes instead of bags.
Watched Cabaret this morning. Love it 😍
She sounds and looks just like her mother. I am flabbergasted. Gorgeous
guessing you've never seen her father
Besides being catchy this song is just true.
Their Speaking truth such talent 💯✨
Buonasera siete sempre adorabili e vi ascolto sempre fino a stancarmi eureka eureka eureka eureka 👍👏💪🤩🌻🌻🇮🇹🇮🇹
This is the best interpretation of Cabaret. Even the Broadway revival with Alan Cummings...just too overtly sexual. Joel Grey was just plain creepy with a hint of sexual perversion...wasn't all in your face. And that made it way better.
buenísimo
Still prefer Grey's interpretation...just a matter of preference.
+ohsnapiam59 Still the music is fine, their acting is fine....
Although Liza gives the worst interpretation of Sally Bowles, who is supposed to be completely untalented - Jane Horricks was absolutely spot on and even hams up Sally's lack of talent, Liza is just too polished and perfect.
+GoAway LeaveMeAlone agree 100%! Lizas version of the song Cabaret , while seen as a classic, is completely wrong. we are watching a woman fall apart, but w Liza, she seems pretty damn ok
This song gets stuck in my head a lot. Especially in exams.
Amen...
Thanks for being of service.
Blessings 🙏
Dr Scott
My favorite song from the movie...Liza is amazing, as is Joel. I just love this movie so much!! XD
Just great - so many years ago and still so good!!
