Ive ran JL w7 in multiple applications for years! Different builders you name it but once I bought a sundown zv6 it was a game changer. The zv6 sounded just as good at all frequencies and played them with authority! JL is good for the majority of peeps who just want bass.
My zv6 are not SQ subs as they produce rattling noises such as drinks bouncing around in cup holders, windshield wipers bouncing on windshield, windows shaking. Even those listening to it can hear there house vents rattle as you drive by. It is a rattle trap if there ever was one.

I can say that if JL made a sub comparable in power to that zv6, it would be the best on earth. There are like 8 different patents in the w7 that make it unique to any other sub. The sundown I can say is 5x more reliable and can take far more abuse. And honestly the SQ isn’t that much worse than the W7. Even tho sundown is an SPL sub, it is still very musical and dynamic. The W7 is a bit more “fragile” and 1/3 the power but nothing else sounds like it. One of a kind

Exactly. The box, the vehicle and angle of subs all play a part in the SQ. My zv5 18" hits very much harder than any w7 while sounding just as good because it's in a proper box.

Been running W7s for 20 years. I am on my 10th W7 driver. I just can't get enough of them. They are pricey, but you get what you pay for! If you want the loudest single W7, then the 13 is the answer. If you want loud, then several of the 12's are the best route, because pound for pound, watt for watt, and cube for cube, they cant be beat! I am currently running a single 13w7AE on a D4S JP23 v2 wired at .75 ohms and it is bananas. It's set up for SQ and burped a 142.6 @ 40 Hz and can do 140 dB on bass heavy music. Box is 13-ply birch tuned at 31.5 Hz with 2.4 cu. ft.

W7 for sure. First time I heard one, it was the 8” one and that thing left me speechless. Sounded great and hit plenty hard. I had some Alpine Type Rs (still have them) but I’m considering getting an 8w7.
I don’t have jl audio but what it helps the w7 is the Xmax if I’m not wrong they can do 31mm. 13.5 inch sub. I have sub in my car that is rated 900rms 12 inch but xmax is 16mm but it still pounds nice I really don’t get sq or spl whole thing in the comment section because a true sq system is always pair or single 10 inch sub that’s the standard. I have a truck with pair of 10 is my closest to sq sounds nice and flat all levels. Anyways w7 definitely not a sq sub that SPL sub with the power it handles that’s why people love and hate that sub because of that

Had 1 sundown 12 dual 2 ohm hooked on memohis 1200 mono... Truckn tuners, built me a console box for my 2013 ram... had 400 watt amp for doors and tweeters.. the depth of the bass was beastly 😊 I do wish I had given JL audio subs a chance, but I do use the c1's in my doors and c2 mid tweeter in dash.. really clean sound :-)
I mean the sundown is pretty accurate, most ppl wont hear the difference anyway. I've never met anyone doing critical listening with car audio so for the average consumer they'll probably go with the sundown over the JL. At this point it's fanboys vs fanboys

Sundown is a F1 car.
I've owned 3 W7s in my life. I haven't had a car for 10 years, but when I did and was into car--stereo I upgraded everything over and over again, eventually getting Diamond Hex front speakers and DLS 7x10s in the rear. I went through Soundstream 10", JL W3 12", Diamond Audio D12..I never upgraded my sub after I got the W7 - I never found a better sounding speaker in my life. It was so good in fact - that I bought two JL Audio Fathom 12 inch speakers for my music studio (stereo bass) total overkill, but it's completely immersive and sounds unreal.. and one the hardest areas to mix when making records is the low end - so I can hear exactly what's going on down there and mix it perfectly every time... and, enjoying being "inside" the bass while I do it!

JL audio subs are nice but they break down since there not made for competition. Sundown audio are super nice and are made for competition. Sundown can handle alot of power. Had my experiences of them. I am a professional audio installer and had many customers walking in my shop for w6 and w7 sub repair and had repaired them many times throughout the years. But never had a customer walking in for a sundown sub repair. Sundown audio is the best.
Sundown all day. With the right box and tuning you can make that sundown sub either sql or spl. Or you can build a box that put the sub in the middle of both right in the sweet spot of sql and spl.
The performance of a subwoofer depends deeply on the quality of the enclosure. Each of these drivers are capable in their own right. I say get what makes you and your wallet happy.

Ive owned many (JL, Kicker, RF, Inifinty, pioneer, Fi, DD, Sundown, Skar, AQ, Massive, Konaki, CT sounds, Memphis, Dayton, Quantum, Rockville, DB drive etc.) And these are only the subs i remember. Ive owned tons more amps and speakers. My point is i know W7s are good but there are alot of speakers that can easily do what a W7 does at a fraction of the cost. Audio has made leaps and bounds in the last decade. Sundown is one of the best examples, not the cheapest but definitely make some awesom subs that sounds great. Budget wise Skar is hard to beat.
@@swanginfleet You are not wrong. However, JL has elevated the price of the W7 to ridiculous levels and people still pay the price. I would think that by now, they would have recouped the cost of research and development for these. The W7's are literally DOUBLE in price of what they were released at. Inflation since then has gone up by 67%. It's as if JL is saying, "we have the best sub in the world". I really don't agree with their pricing scheme, which is why I have only paid MSRP for a W7 ONCE. All the others I have bought were used, with the exception of a 13w7 that I bought new for $450 from a guy back in 2008. I just really enjoy what the W7 does for me without needing a very large enclosure or requiring a ton of power. I have had other great sounding subs in the past, but typically, they needed a larger enclosure to get the job done. I do think there are many great subwoofers out there and if there was no such thing as JL, I'd probably still be rocking Kicker. That new SOLO-X looks interesting!
I've had a w7 10 and a 8. Both were awesome. I think it just depends on what you want. If you want maximum bass, then you go with sundown, but if you want the best of both worlds, then you go with w7
Sundown subs have the sound quality as well. With bass (20-100hz) it’s almost impossible to tell if the sound quality is good. So the ZV6 is always the best way to go. Best bang for your buck
My first subwoofer was a 12 w7 and ever since I’ve tried everything in between, kicker, sundown, DC, DD, DB drive, B2,etc JL is still my favorite, beastly but still classy and elegant, another level… which is shown by its price-point obviously.
JL smooth bass. Hits all bass tones. Won’t handle stated power. Sundown raspy bass. Only hits certain bass tones. Can handle way more power than advertised.hard hitting bass. Sound quality vs pure power
12 W7 hands down bro I just recently ordered their home speakers as well for the first time since 1996. I’ve never bought any other car amplifier or subwoofer for my rides but JL Audio and decided to get there in the wall subwoofers for my house and ceiling speakers and I got to say it brother amazing this company is the holy Grail for a car audio and now probably home theater as well

Where I live there is a guy selling a 12w7 for 500 so resell value maybe not so good. I had a JL 8 inch sub the one with the JL enclosure it's 400 brand new and I had to let it go for 125 because nobody wanted to offer more for it

I had 2 jl w7s back in 2010 and the jl amp That went with it.I bought them nude.They were pricey but the sound was Unmatched and I also upgraded my door speakers and ran a one thousand rms 4 Channel 250 rms in a ford explorer 1997 Everything I had was competition. It just sounded great. I had a little over 6 grand just audio..

I have 2 JLw7’s in my 2008 tahoe. Paired with a cyber12k, mechman 350 and three rockford amps 2500bdcp and the matching old school 1000 4channel amp. I have more gear in the truck but trust me, they slam! I haven’t lost a stop light battle yet lol😂
Something I noticed on Sundown's web site is that there are no specs for enclosure size, xmax, or cone area. It bugs me because I'd really like to know!

The W7 is a much more compliant (softer) subwoofer. It has fewer spider assemblies and a lighter cone, so it doesn’t need as much motor to accelerate its reduced mass. The coil is also made with much finer round copper strand, whereas the ZV6 has a flat wound aluminum coil. This results in the W7 having finer articulation but the ZV6 being capable of sweeping more air while requiring much more power in the process. At their respective limits, the ZV6 will be louder, but the W7 still *sounds better imho
Both. All subwoofers are great in there own way and own price range. Even the budget subs in a quality enclosures and recommend RMS can sound great and be loud for what it is. I can make a kicker comp single 10 slam in the low 30s. Most people that trash talk a company, it's actually on them for choking it out in a garbage enclosure. All subwoofers can slam in the right enclosure. For sure these big boys will be louder. But you can get great sound and volume out of a budget set up that's all Im Saying. God bless
Zv6 all day for playing lows loud asf. For a daily I think I would go with the Dub 7. I never heard the dub 7, but I owned 3 15w6’s in the 90’s and loved the hell out of them as my daily beaters.
I can't even begin to budget in that W7. I love Sundown, but I have history with the W series and will always choose JL Audio over all if cost isn't a concern.
I have only paid retail for my 1st 12w7 which was $549 back in 2002. Since then, I have found deals at pawn shops and craigslist. Once I bought a brand new 13w7 for $450 cash. It was a little sketchy to say the least. I really think JL has gotten a little greedy with their pricing. Especially since they should have recouped their research & development costs of the W7 by now....shit, W7 prices have literally doubled since their introduction!
Had a W7 13.7 and currently own a Sundown ZV6 15. The Sundown sounds as good as the JL for SQL. Sundown out performs the JL for SPL by a long shot! I own a JL Fathom 112 for my home audio and love it! So I love both brands.
The fan boys are out in force on this 1. Just like any speaker. As long as you follow instructions properly all speakers sound good. It is user error onbad sounds.
Since i already have a 12w7AE and even an 8W7AE i would go with the W7 subwoofer, it really does have excellent souns quality specially if you have it inside the car in an open space like a SUV etc where the subwoofer is close to you. You definitely dont want to be hearing mechanical noise like some of these other subs do that push an incredible amount of air. These two subs are in a different category, the sundown is more for SPL and its forgiving of the distortion or clipping while the W7 is intended to be use for Sound Quality and even qualifies to be used in the Sound Quality League.
Really depends. Can you run an eq on it and clean it up to be better matched with the jl? If there's no way to make it sound like the quality of the lower powered one. The the jl is definitely the way to go.
In highschool I had the exact same! I had a 10w7 and when i would play it at the beach people would come up to my truck thinking I had a 15 lmao idk why but the sound from those w7s travel far 💯 I have a zv6 now tho😂
Zv6 all day. While JL has made a name for it self and is over priced, I would take the Sundown for now. Once I’m done destroying my trunks with the savage lows of the Sundown and ready to retire my ears, then I would go with JL

@@oscarcastro2282 160 dB at 15-30 Hz doesn't seem that loud to most bass heads. Loud noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm to your ears. Just because you may not experience pain, doesn't mean that you're not doing irreversible damage. You can always have your ears tested every six months to see if you're correct. The first thing you will lose is your higher frequencies.

I have the C3 650 front doors they sound awesome thinking of changing them for the Focal es165kx2 run 4 channels.

The performance of a subwoofer depends deeply on the quality of the enclosure. Each of these drivers are capable in their own right. I say get what makes you and your wallet happy.

Ive owned many (JL, Kicker, RF, Inifinty, pioneer, Fi, DD, Sundown, Skar, AQ, Massive, Konaki, CT sounds, Memphis, Dayton, Quantum, Rockville, DB drive etc.) And these are only the subs i remember. Ive owned tons more amps and speakers. My point is i know W7s are good but there are alot of speakers that can easily do what a W7 does at a fraction of the cost. Audio has made leaps and bounds in the last decade. Sundown is one of the best examples, not the cheapest but definitely make some awesom subs that sounds great. Budget wise Skar is hard to beat.
@@swanginfleet You are not wrong. However, JL has elevated the price of the W7 to ridiculous levels and people still pay the price. I would think that by now, they would have recouped the cost of research and development for these. The W7's are literally DOUBLE in price of what they were released at. Inflation since then has gone up by 67%. It's as if JL is saying, "we have the best sub in the world". I really don't agree with their pricing scheme, which is why I have only paid MSRP for a W7 ONCE. All the others I have bought were used, with the exception of a 13w7 that I bought new for $450 from a guy back in 2008. I just really enjoy what the W7 does for me without needing a very large enclosure or requiring a ton of power. I have had other great sounding subs in the past, but typically, they needed a larger enclosure to get the job done. I do think there are many great subwoofers out there and if there was no such thing as JL, I'd probably still be rocking Kicker. That new SOLO-X looks interesting!

I've had a w7 10 and a 8. Both were awesome. I think it just depends on what you want. If you want maximum bass, then you go with sundown, but if you want the best of both worlds, then you go with w7
Jl Audio for me. My system is a full Jl Audio and sound quality is truly amazing.
Sundown subs have the sound quality as well. With bass (20-100hz) it’s almost impossible to tell if the sound quality is good. So the ZV6 is always the best way to go. Best bang for your buck

My first subwoofer was a 12 w7 and ever since I’ve tried everything in between, kicker, sundown, DC, DD, DB drive, B2,etc JL is still my favorite, beastly but still classy and elegant, another level… which is shown by its price-point obviously.
W7 for sure.
JL smooth bass. Hits all bass tones. Won’t handle stated power.
Sundown raspy bass. Only hits certain bass tones. Can handle way more power than advertised.hard hitting bass.

I just recently ordered their home speakers as well for the first time since 1996. I’ve never bought any other car amplifier or subwoofer for my rides but JL Audio and decided to get there in the wall subwoofers for my house and ceiling speakers and I got to say it brother amazing this company is the holy Grail for a car audio and now probably home theater as well

@@jacobclark89give it try because my brother has pair Velodyne subs but he replaced one with alpine type r sub it hits lower and sounds very nice. That’s a thing about some car subs they have nice xmax. I’m trying to figure out to build myself sub box but I want to get myself pair of jbl 2288h subs for my HT .

Honestly the ZV6 is a far superior performing woofer but I'd take the W7 specifically for the retail value so I could sell it and buy a Zv6 and have a few hundred bucks left lol-ol-ol
Where I live there is a guy selling a 12w7 for 500 so resell value maybe not so good. I had a JL 8 inch sub the one with the JL enclosure it's 400 brand new and I had to let it go for 125 because nobody wanted to offer more for it

Superior performing in what? The ZV6 is an SPL sub, as the W7 is an SQL sub. They are both superior performing in those categories. It just depends on what you are looking for personally. Anything SQL-focused will be much more costly than SPL-focused. Cheers

I had 2 jl w7s back in 2010 and the jl amp That went with it.I bought them nude.They were pricey but the sound was Unmatched and I also upgraded my door speakers and ran a one thousand rms 4 Channel 250 rms in a ford explorer 1997 Everything I had was competition. It just sounded great. I had a little over 6 grand just audio..

I have 2 JLw7’s in my 2008 tahoe. Paired with a cyber12k, mechman 350 and three rockford amps 2500bdcp and the matching old school 1000 4channel amp. I have more gear in the truck but trust me, they slam! I haven’t lost a stop light battle yet lol😂

Something I noticed on Sundown's web site is that there are no specs for enclosure size, xmax, or cone area. It bugs me because I'd really like to know!
You can get that info from down 4 sound. I bought two 15 zv6 from them my box is 8.5 cubes tune to 32 HZ

The W7 is a much more compliant (softer) subwoofer. It has fewer spider assemblies and a lighter cone, so it doesn’t need as much motor to accelerate its reduced mass. The coil is also made with much finer round copper strand, whereas the ZV6 has a flat wound aluminum coil. This results in the W7 having finer articulation but the ZV6 being capable of sweeping more air while requiring much more power in the process. At their respective limits, the ZV6 will be louder, but the W7 still *sounds better imho
Both. All subwoofers are great in there own way and own price range. Even the budget subs in a quality enclosures and recommend RMS can sound great and be loud for what it is. I can make a kicker comp single 10 slam in the low 30s. Most people that trash talk a company, it's actually on them for choking it out in a garbage enclosure. All subwoofers can slam in the right enclosure. For sure these big boys will be louder. But you can get great sound and volume out of a budget set up that's all Im Saying. God bless
Zv6 all day for playing lows loud asf. For a daily I think I would go with the Dub 7. I never heard the dub 7, but I owned 3 15w6’s in the 90’s and loved the hell out of them as my daily beaters.

I have only paid retail for my 1st 12w7 which was $549 back in 2002. Since then, I have found deals at pawn shops and craigslist. Once I bought a brand new 13w7 for $450 cash. It was a little sketchy to say the least. I really think JL has gotten a little greedy with their pricing. Especially since they should have recouped their research & development costs of the W7 by now....shit, W7 prices have literally doubled since their introduction!

Had a W7 13.7 and currently own a Sundown ZV6 15. The Sundown sounds as good as the JL for SQL. Sundown out performs the JL for SPL by a long shot! I own a JL Fathom 112 for my home audio and love it! So I love both brands.

The fan boys are out in force on this 1. Just like any speaker. As long as you follow instructions properly all speakers sound good. It is user error onbad sounds.

Since i already have a 12w7AE and even an 8W7AE i would go with the W7 subwoofer, it really does have excellent souns quality specially if you have it inside the car in an open space like a SUV etc where the subwoofer is close to you. You definitely dont want to be hearing mechanical noise like some of these other subs do that push an incredible amount of air. These two subs are in a different category, the sundown is more for SPL and its forgiving of the distortion or clipping while the W7 is intended to be use for Sound Quality and even qualifies to be used in the Sound Quality League.
Really depends. Can you run an eq on it and clean it up to be better matched with the jl? If there's no way to make it sound like the quality of the lower powered one. The the jl is definitely the way to go.

Zv6 all day. While JL has made a name for it self and is over priced, I would take the Sundown for now. Once I’m done destroying my trunks with the savage lows of the Sundown and ready to retire my ears, then I would go with JL
I agree with you that they want too much money for them, but just be sure you don't destroy your hearing prior to getting a W7 or you'll never appreciate it.

@@oscarcastro2282 160 dB at 15-30 Hz doesn't seem that loud to most bass heads. Loud noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm to your ears. Just because you may not experience pain, doesn't mean that you're not doing irreversible damage. You can always have your ears tested every six months to see if you're correct. The first thing you will lose is your higher frequencies.
@@RodofAllTrades only high frequency can harm your hearing bass is such low frequency it doesn't hurt anyone's ears, so many bass heads have 160db setups and their hearing is perfectly fine
