Quando ho bisogno di sentire una canzone che mi scalda il cuore, ascolto Caruso cantata da Lucio Dalla.
J’ai entendu cette très belle chanson interprétée par Mr.Pavarotti et il la chante avec toute la technique d’un chanteur aguerri. Monsieur Dalla la chante avec son cœur, avec ses tripes, avec quelque chose que personne d’autre ne peut donner. Il la chante avec la profondeur de ses sentiments.

Ero in barca tra Sorrento e Capri con Angela Baraldi: stavamo ascoltando le canzoni di Roberto Murolo quando si ruppe l'asse del motore. Andammo a vela per qualche miglio e poi chiamai un amico, il proprietario dell'Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, che ci trainò al porto. In attesa che aggiustassero la barca, ci invitò a passare la notte in hotel, proprio nella suite dove morì Caruso. Lì c'era tutto, anche il pianoforte, completamente scordato. Quella sera un altro amico, giù al bar La Scogliera, mi raccontò di un Caruso alla fine dei suoi giorni, innamorato di una giovane cantante cui dava lezioni. Era uno stratagemma per starle vicino, ma l'ultima sera, sentendo la morte arrivare, fece portare il piano sulla terrazza e cantò con un'intensità tale che lo sentirono fino al porto. Mi sono inventato la scena dei suoi ultimi momenti, quando pensa alle notti là in America. Era un passaggio che nel 1986 per me, che stavo per partire per un tour negli Stati Uniti, aveva un significato importante. Per me quel 'Te vojo bene assaje' messo in quel punto della canzone significava darle il marchio della napoletanità. Da sempre nutro un grande amore per Napoli, per la sua cultura, dalla scrittura alla filosofia fino alle canzoni: è una città che mi ha sempre catturato.
