  • The foam rubber kydex press has been the standard tool for thermoforming kydex knife sheaths for many years. But a vacuum press is another option, one with powerful advantages over presses. Check out how blade smith Walter Sorrells makes himself a vacuum forming table/press here! Yeah, it works for holsters, too.

      Walter, like a wolverine, isn't afraid of much. Unorthodox method with ample care and concern applied I'd suggest. ✌ 😃

    My Rigid table saw was looking over my shoulder and was ecstatic to see yours, said it was the first time he didn't feel like a red headed step child in years.

    Speaking from experience, MDF is not a great material for vacuum tables. I used it on my first table and never got great "pull". I found out from others that MDF by its nature is porous, causing the vacuum loss. I bought a piece of scrap Corian countertop material (almost as cheap as mdf). It cuts and drills very easily and holds up to vacuum and high temps.

    Also, instead of the silicone membrane, try 1/8" neoprene foam. It holds heat better (and can be preheated) thus giving better definition, especially when using a lower flow vac pump like the HF pumps.

    Why don't you just mount your kydex in a frame, heat the framed kydex, place the framed kydex on vacuum form and vacuum. Now you are actually thermoforming. you will have minimal heat loss and better definition in your parts. ABS is also a good TF plastic. It is economical and has a low memory set temp.

    • @MJFacas
      @MJFacas Před rokem +1

      ABS tends to deform easier which is not good when working on the retention of a sheath. As for the framed Kydex there are a lot of people who slap down a big piece of Kydex and then press down the edges with a metal frame. It gives better definition and is easier to cool faster. The downside is you use a lot more Kydex since it has to have enough overlap around the edges of the mold.

    Get behind that table saw. The you are using that saw is very dangerous. you are risking kickbacks so much more than you realize. Also when you cut that narrow piece of MDF you really should use the table square. Just a few friendly tips from a guy that has been using table saws for 25+ years.
