Vegan Keto | Plant Based Keto Dieting | How to Get Protein | How to Get Fats- Thomas DeLauer…
The conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA tends to be inefficient - it’s commonly estimated that 5% to 10% of ALA is converted to EPA, but less than 2% to 5% of it is converted to DHA. Although conversion is slow and incomplete, it appears to be sufficient to meet the needs of most healthy people if ALA intake is sufficient. For vegans (or vegetarians) who consume few, if any, direct sources of EPA and DHA, a ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids ranging from 2:1 to 4:1 has been suggested as being optimal to ensure maximum conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA. However, recent research suggests that optimal conversion is achieved with a ratio of 1:1, although this is significantly more difficult to achieve
    bHB & Leucine Oxidation:
A study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation found that bHB caused leucine oxidation to decrease by 18-41% (mean was 30%), and incorporation of leucine into skeletal muscle protein increased 5-17% (mean was 10%). Meaning that decreases leucine oxidation and promotes protein synthesis in human.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3...
An additional study, published in the journal Lancet, administered bHB to obese subjects (more than 150% ideal body-weight) who were either receiving a 600 kcal diet containing 34 g protein on one day with a total fast (water and vitamins only) on the next day, for 21 days, or were undergoing therapeutic starvation for 14 days. Both intravenous and oral hydroxybutyrate significantly reduced net body protein loss as measured by total urinary nitrogen and it did not significantly affect the rate of weight-loss but seemed to increase the fat/lean ratio of the tissue loss.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6...
    Pea Protein (Sunwarrior):
Unlike many other protein powders, pea protein is not derived from 1 of the 8 most common allergenic foods (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, fish, shellfish, and wheat), allowing another option for those following restricted diets. Pea protein is derived from ground yellow split peas and often from a mechanical rather than the chemical separation of soy and whey proteins - this allows the pea protein to also retain soluble fiber. Many people also appreciate that producing pea protein uses fewer resources (water and fertilizers namely) and seems to be less environmentally impactful than other proteins
Polyphenolics, in coloured seed coat types in particular, which may have antioxidant and anticarcinogenic activity, saponins which may exhibit hypocholesterolemic and anticarcinogenic activity, and galactose oligosaccharides (byproduct of pea protein production) which may exert beneficial prebiotic effects in the large intestine*
Study - Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition:
The study aimed at comparing the impact of an oral supplementation with Pea protein vs. Whey protein and Placebo on biceps muscle thickness and strength after a 12-week resistance training program. 161 males, aged 18 to 35 years, underwent 12 weeks of resistance training on upper limb muscles - they were included in the Pea protein (n = 53), Whey protein (n = 54) or Placebo (n = 54) group. All had to take 25 g of the proteins or placebo twice a day during the 12-week training period. Results showed a significant time effect for biceps brachii muscle thickness - thickness increased from 24.9 ± 3.8 mm to 26.9 ± 4.1 mm and 27.3 ± 4.4 mm at day 0, day 42 and day 84, respectively. Performing a sensitivity study on the weakest participants (with regards to strength at inclusion), thickness increases were significantly different between groups (+20.2, +15.6 and +8.6 for Pea, Whey and Placebo, respectively). It was concluded that since there was no difference obtained between the two protein groups, pea protein could be used as an alternative to Whey-based dietary products.

I never really set out to be a “vegan” “keto” person, but getting diagnosed with cancer threw my diet for a loop….
I was vegetarian for most of my life anyway, so getting rid of meat/fish wasn’t a big deal…but I LOVED my cheese and carbs.
So learning how to eat this way has helped me SO much. And I’ve researched some cheeses that are “healthier” than others so I get my cheese fix maybe every other month or so…
I feel a thousand times better than I ever have before, this is an amazing topic of research that needs to be looked at further.
I’ve also cut out gluten, sugar/sugar substitutes, fried foods, processed foods and packaged foods. No pre-packaged sauces, and seed oils.
    Great video! 😊

@@helena_5456 Oh yeah, it's very restrictive, but on my own terms. I was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and going through treatments still...that was my motivator. I'm shocked at how much my tastebuds have changed. I don't crave donuts or cakes like I used to. And I've come across recipes that make desserts without any refined sugars/maple syrups/honey, etc. I just use bananas or dates as my sweetner if I feel like it. Packaged/processed foods were easy to kick out. The hardest part is not being able to eat out. But I'm learning about what restaurants offer in terms of gluten free, oil free, sugar free etc. on their menus or if the do special modifications before I go there. To date, since changing my diet, I've only gone out once to a restaurant and overpaid for a pretty boring salad...lol. But it was a small price to pay to hang out with friends outside of my house. :)

I became plant based with no dairy last February due to my overall health suffering from bad habits. I started my journey at 5'9" and 218lbs. It's been 1 month shy of a year doing this transition and I'm down to 172 pounds. I can tell you first hand (my experience alone) that by removing the meat as a primary source of nutrition and deleting dairy from my diet as a whole; I have never felt better: more energized, better sleep, manageable stress, positive attitude. This could be due to the weight loss; however, I feel completely saturated when I'm done eating without the bloat, upset stomach, or feeling of dead weight and wanting to nap directly after lunch. In fact, while others at my job are sluggish and feeling worthless after lunch, I am full of energy and ready to tackle the next task. Starting Monday, I am going to transition into a Plant Based Keto diet for 1 month.
I've been very interested to see the overall effects of Keto, but have been hesitant due to the meat and dairy stigma attached to Keto.
Note: I have been in heavy training to accomplish my first Half Marathon this coming April. I have lost tons of muscle mass due to the 5 day steady stat cardio training schedule. I have found it difficult to mix resistance and marathon type training together.

Thank you Thomas for this much needed video! Outside of politics and religion, I can't think of a subject that is as contentious as the subject of food- specifically as it relates to the acrimony between those who advocate for keto verses those who advocate for veganism. I really appreciate your efforts in clearly articulating that the two dietary paradigms don't have to be mutually exclusive. In an online space that is frequently inundated with ad hominem attacks and invective rhetoric, it is nice to see this more conciliatory approach.

Probably because diets (especially one based off of a moral argument like veganism) act a lot like religions in our mind; especially to strict adherents. If you didn't believe that it was the best way, you wouldn't do it, so anything that challenges that belief becomes a personal attack (and 'misinformation', so 'evil'; causing what should be a rational argument into a moral one). And feeling like you are personally being attacked leads to stronger, irrational feelings regarding the subject.
And again, it doesn't help that veganism is inherently based on a moral argument (other diets aren't so much, but again, people can fall into the trap of arguing on moral terms). A moral argument that I strongly disagree with, and so I think vegans are judgemental assholes, but see the above paragraph.

Why would you want to do that? You have just gotten out lucky. I was ten years vegan and it destroyed my health! (Yes, I did it right😉, I'm a certified nutritionist.) Sure, try a couple of weeks but spare yourself the misery of long term veganism. Be glad you got out after only 2 years, that probably haven't hurt you too bad yet! I still WISH that I could be vegan bcs I was an ethical vegan, activist too and also in it bcs I thought it was best for my health and the environment. But it's simply just not possible, I get very sick. Most people cannot thrive long term on a plantbased vegan diet however well planned it is! Just though I should give you a little advice, but ofc you should do whatever feels best for YOU. If you're one of the lucky ones that can thrive on a plantbased diet..go ahead then! Best regards! 😊

It took a lot of work to get my macros & micros where I need them with no supplements, but man was it worth it. Today is day 5 and the last two mornings I've woken up with energy like I've never had before. I'm narcoleptic and I've done everything possible to mitigate my symptoms without going pack to meds (they were nothing but trouble for me.) Now I have an extra hour or two each day to enjoy life!! This video couldn’t have been more timely. I’m about to start a 3 week religious fast with my church on January 7 and since I have had several people ask me about doing keto as a vegetarian or vegan I figured I would cut out all meat and dairy during the 3 weeks. My only question was I still planned on having eggs and collagen protein. So I guess it wouldn’t necessarily be vegan but more vegetarian? Sorry for my vegan vegetarian ignorance, I’m a meat and dairy lover :-)
