  • For this week's "Shoddy video" I have a review for you. One where I'm guessing some of the more grumpily readers amongst us may want to be sitting down and playing some soothing music. As I'm about to present to you a new e-road bike, and we know how some people react to that kind of thing!

    I’m on an entry level Orbea Gain D40 because is is at a price that I can justify for leisure cycling. The assist is practical and keeps me honest. I can keep up on the flats with no assist above 25kph as the bike is less than 12kg, I can get home if I misjudge the battery life without dying. I live in the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland and couldn’t enjoy riding a standard bike that I could afford. I’m 70 and now doing 50-70k rides every second day. I’m in love with cycling and the new Orbea with the same x35 system as the Scott. If I could afford the carbon version I doubt it would improve my experience but would reduce my bank balance. I’d be happy with an ‘e’ on my back to let the fools who think I can go up 16% hills at 20kph know that I’m assisted. I only ever did this once on my own and now I ride with younger fitter friends, they want me to be the tow bike on hills and against wind (not likely). I sit happily with ‘low assist’ on at the max speed they can achieve unassisted in adverse conditions and on the steep climbs and we all get along just fine. My confidence has increased and the assist stays off until I really need it and when I do my confidence soars and I enjoy myself more. If everyone had an e-bike for leisure cycling, I might not feel the same way but I doubt that will ever happen. If you have the urge to rekindle your love of cycling at an older age or after a medical issue this might be your chance. Be careful though as I am pushing harder and harder as I get fitter - be sure you are getting good medical advice and wear a heart monitor, the assist won’t do it for you, you still have to pedal.............

    I just bought a road e-bike which I'm really enjoying - what has surprised me is that I seem to be getting a better workout than on my last non-e bike - my average heart rate on a 2 hour ride I just did on the e-bike was about 10bpm faster than on the old bike. I think this is because I didn't kill myself on the two big hills on the route so I had more energy for the rest of the ride (my heart rate was still around 145 bpm on the hills so I can vouch that you are still working even on the hills!)

    • @neilk22
      @neilk22 Před 2 lety +2

      This is what the inexperienced cyclists don’t understand: you are working out, it’s not a free ride, but the nice thing is you aren’t killing yourself. If you look at how the pro cycling coaches are pushing polarised training (majority z2), An ebike is actually ideal for getting the training in with a far less requirement for recovery between rides.

  • @JCLyonmusic
    @JCLyonmusic Před 3 lety +26

    Most of the time I ride alone with my electric bike and I rediscover the pleasure of climbing the hills that I had to avoid with my classic bike because my age does not allow me any more or so I was content with flat roads on short trips without funny. Rest assured, I do not race with anyone and I have never had bad thoughts from other cyclists on the contrary they ask me about this bike, thinking they might use it one day. day in a few years. That said, the Scott Addict eRide is too expensive for my wallet and its motor lacks 40Nm torque, it's half the Giant eRoad I use which weighs 19.7kg but is much more affordable. Cycling should remain fun for everyone at all ages, regardless of the model.

    • @vincekerrigan8300
      @vincekerrigan8300 Před 2 lety +2

      Absolutely right - I'm climbing hills I had been avoiding. Over the last three years or so I became very frustrated with searching for flat routes all the time, so I finally decided, at the age of 90, that a bit of assistance would not come amiss. A proper e-road bike was beyond my means, but being a keen roadie, none of the bottom end e-bikes appealed, weight or appearance wise, so I bought a moderately priced friction drive e-assist kit which has enabled me to retain my present road bike. It is virtually unchanged in appearance, and the kit is so light that the all up weight, bike and kit, is only 13.5kg. Although not as refined as a hub motor, having only one power level, it performs more than adequately with judicious use of the gears. When riding without power - the bulk of the time - there is negligible resistance from the motor, so the overall effect is very similar, it seems, to the Mahle system. I would thoroughly recommend an e-bike to anyone who, through age, or maybe some disability, is beginning to feel their activities are being limited - it will give them a new lease of life.

The 16mph limit is ideal as it means it assists when going uphill, but she has to jump on my wheel on the flat and downhills. “Pay attention Mrs Smales or you’ll get dropped!”

    I am always very sceptical about the claimed range on these bikes. People say things like 'I get 100 miles range' when what they actually mean is that they did a 100 mile ride using the battery only a part of the time, and so had some charge left. A 208 wh battery is unlikely to give more than 50km/30miles if used continuously, less if very hilly. It is a bit misleading, to say the least.

    This e-ride comes with a higher seated position compared to the Addict RC bikes, due to the higher stack, shorter reach and higher head tube. For that reason I'll have to pass on this model, as I want a bike that looks and feels like a performance model, not an older rider model.
    I'm ok with the price tho since the model with Ultegra Di2 is almost the same as the non-electric Addict. Maybe the non-electric is expensive ?

I also use it for commuting, and I'd like to see you commute by bicycle in large city before you get smart. If you don't get it, it doesn't mean that it doesn't makes sense. @书中自有黄金屋 ok, it's incorrect. This bicycle is propelled by pedals, like all pedaltec bicycles. The motor provides varying levels of assistance and can be switched off completely. Hence this is a bicycle according to the definition you've provided.
      I can assure you that only a tiny proportion of people riding road bicycles in AU race them, because having fun is the name of the game, and racing is hard isn't fun for most people.
      They make it look good, by not making an accent on it being an ebike, and there is nothing wrong with that. The truth is that it would still be 10k an hour slower than most good riders on a race bike, and it could only offend a purist that doesn't have much in terms of cash or fitness.

I get that people who are suffering from chronic illness or disability, or a simple lack of fitness might benefit....but let's be honest, if you fall into that category, it's not just about the power output or endurance (which is solved with pedal assist) there's probably also the topic of flexibility and your physical capability to actually get in position on an aggressive road race bike.

      You are so mistaken - it all depends on individual circumstances. I am still riding my road bike, but for the last three years or so, have been obliged more and more to seek out flat routes because the hills were becoming too tough. These routes became very repetetive and boring, so, having recently hit 90, I decided that maybe some assistance might not be a bad idea. Proper e-road bikes being financially out of the question, I went for a lightweight 250W friction drive e-kit. This enabled me to retain my present road bike barely changed in appearance, and with the total weight increased to only 13.5kg I have a reasonably close equivalent to an e-roadie at a fraction of the cost. Probably not quite as refined, with possibly a bit less range, but it actually works extremely well, and is used pretty well exclusively for hill and headwind assistance. This has enabled me to extend my rides and visit again areas I have been avoiding - so in my case it has proved a boon, and I can assure you that it will be so to many in differing circumstances.
