Rope and Knots, Part 2: Hanger Coil

Aside from a knife or edged tool, rope is the most important tool we can bring with us into the wilderness. But rope is useless without knots. Knots make rope work for us, and a knowledge of a few basic concepts will help us use rope efficiently. That will make our stay in the wild much more hospitable. In this multipart series I explain the basic concepts, terminology, types, form and function of the most important knots to know for wilderness camping and survival.

If you have a long rope, and you don't wanna wrap around forever, you can add more loops to your accordian. That'll give you more "hanging loops"; but a shorter and thicker, (but much quicker) coil.

Tied on the end of a heavier longer line that knot is used by the hangman to break the soon to be hanged.

@emarbiz Yes you can, although with thicker rope there are more efficient ways to coil your rope, especially if you're going to be using it throughout the day for climbing. With a thick rope, the hanger coil may be fairly cumbersome.

It is not illegal to possess, although there is a bil making it illegal to "place a hangman's noose, or the image of one, on a person's property or public property, with the intent to intimidate."
For years, it was thought that possessing one with 13 loops was illegal, due to the number being seen in old imagery and accounts of public hangings.
