The Remarkable Rise of Luton Town

  • Less than eight years ago, Luton Town were competing in the Conference, or the Vanarama National League as it is now known, which is the fifth tier of English football.
Now the club from Bedfordshire are very much in the mix to win promotion from the Championship to the Premier League this season.
It is a rise that is almost without precedent within English football, so in this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at Luton Town's initial demise, how they managed to rebuild, and why the Hatters might be the best model on how to run an EFL club.

Not a Luton fan myself, but one of my mates is, so I guess I'm a Luton sympathiser, and I was there at Wembley with him on that magic day. It was all a bit different from when we went to away days at Salisbury City and Oxford United in the non-league. Or even the most miserable match I've ever been to in my life, 3-0 loss against Newport County in league two in the pissing rain.

Luton's remarkable rise is very similar to Bournemouth, who went from the bottom of the EFL and near liquidation to the premier league in just 7 years. While Luton's rise is marginally less dramatic, it is still one of the great success stories of recent seasons and a prime example of a club that has been built from the ashes, has a sense of unity and is very well run from top to bottom. Hopefully they can complete the fairytale and take the final step to the premier league.

Hey Alfie, I just thought of a cracking idea for a video you could do on the turbulent recent history of Goztepe in the Super Lig. They’re one of the Super Lig’s most well supported clubs (a bit like a Newcastle United, Sunderland or Strasbourg if you may). In the 2001/02 season, they finished seventh in the top flight, however from 2002 to 2008, they were relegated five times in six seasons, due to their inability to reduce their outstanding debt which resulted in the football club being banned from signing new players during that time. In August of 2007, a business based in Istanbul, vowed to take them back to the top flight making them one of the top five clubs in the country, but they were met with lots of suspicions from the fan base, and then they handed over the ownership to another bloke called Mehmet Sepil in 2014. Anyway, they’re back in the Super Lig as a solid mid table/weaker top half team. Why am I bringing all this up? Because apparently Abramovich is looking to possibly buy the club himself, after being sanctioned from the UK. It’s a crazy crazy story and may you could look into this, not to mention, they are not only a rare example of a club that is considered a neighbourhood club, as well as the fact that they’ve played in 3 different stadiums since 2011, but also in 1969, they became the first Turkish football team to play a semi-final of a European competition.

The team ran out in replica kits in the first few games, because the club were not allowed to spend money on such things, there was no pre season, because there was no squad, Mick Harford was given an impossible task starting on minus 30 points, compare that to Derby who still have international players in their squad , hence the song sung at every match about the FA and the Football League , integrity of the league????

I’ve followed Luton for 40 years. This is a such a well researched and beautifully presented video, that summarises the story in a such an accessible way. If I would have added just one thing, it would be to mention the club’s refusal to take advertising money off gambling firms. Well done on a fantastic video.

I've loosely followed Luton Town since they were in the National League. I did this being a massive fan of Eric Morecambe and wanted to follow his beloved Luton and just see how they were fairing at the time. I ended up following their progression at the best moment possible, their promotion to League Two followed by promotion to League One in the 16/17 season, and incredibly to the Championship in 18/19, surviving it in the great escape they now sit 4th. They deserve recognition for this remarkable achievement and let's hope we finally see Luton back in the top flight soon. COYH!

Cambridge fan. Oh I remember the days in the national league fighting with Luton. It was close until Cambridge played Man Utd in the FA Cup. Luton kicked on and Cambridge knew that playoffs was done so concentrated on fa cup and lost most of the remaining games still finishing 2nd and getting promoted. Luton have really kicked on but I like to think Cambridge now being in league 1 are only 2-3 seasons from championship and maybe following Luton to the premier league

A historic club with a lot of legal problems in 2017 after they separated from their SAD (administrators) and went down to the sixth division as an amateur team. Truly fascinating!

Thanks for highlighting my Home Town club. Yes it is looking good for the Hatters, new stadium and the like. Not that the local Council have helped much at all until recently. I think promotion this year would not be a good step unless revenues can increase significantly. That probably won't happen until the new stadium is up and running, and this is long overdue - thanks to the Council !
I could also go into detail about the point sdeductions which led to the relegations. Instead I look to the future, which looks rosy as things stand.
